There was a casting call for a thief that sounded similar to RH so people assumed a recast, but it could be Aladdin.
I like the idea of seeing how the genie got in the lamp and seeing him escape. Although the “3 wishes” trope is common to westernized versions, the original Aladdin story in the 1001 nights didn’t have a specific limit of wishes given by the magical creatures that Aladdin encounters. There was a slave of the lamp and of a ring. Incidentally, there is a reference in that story to China, so it could be tied to Mulan in some way too.
Disney’s version seems more close to what was done on OUAT, with the 3 wishes and the rules for the wishes. Except, the guy they cast and his look didn’t look like the “good” blue genie who helps Aladdin, but the wicked human guy they trick into taking the genie’s place.
So I could see this either way, that Sydney has powers because he is just a magical creature or that he doesn’t, because he was a human tricked into wishing to take a genie’s place, and once free, would be human again.
I do think Regina didn’t have a magic mirror until Genie wished that on himself, in OUAT version. Yes, the original Disney version is different, but in OUAT doesn’t that almost go without saying?
Why bother getting the character back if he isn’t going to do something interesting and big? That doesn’t mean he has to have magic, or even solve the transportation problem, but he could have a connection to Neverland or something like that.

July 12, 2013 at 9:16 am #200253RumplesGirlKeymasterI like the idea of connecting him to OUATinWL with Cyrus somehow. It would make sense since that show also has a genie. As for the casting call that we assume is RH, it doesn’t have to be: it could be one of the Merry Men. Aladdin is really stretching it since they wouldn’t introduce another storyline on top of the NL myth. That’s really way too much. So, instead of a recast they could have it be Little John or Will Scarlet or Alan a-Dale.
But back to Sydney. Belle frees him from the library and maybe his arc for however long he is going to be around is to do repentance for serving Regina. So he helps Belle and Alice with whatever they need.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Quirk that will release later this month, David Anders, the man behind the charming-yet-slightly-tragic Dr. Whale/Victor Frankenstein, revealed that he will be returning to Storybrooke in Season 3. Sadly, we won’t see the doctor in the first episode, but Anders’ “I will be back!” is enough to get us excited for his eventual return.

Hopefully, Dr. Whale will feature strongly in the science vs. magic debate raging in SB as the Home Office threatens the town.

Maybe he will be forced to choose sides and will end up choosing science at first, especially if THO makes him an offer he can’t refuse: like helping to resurrect his brother and sending him home.

Meh. After his disgusting twitter comments, I went completely off the whale/franky character. When they abandoned his storyline mid season 2 that was one bizarre writing choice I didn’t mind – the guy is a jerk. (But we lost Ruby too *cry* – although Megan leaving meant we didn’t have to see Whale try and sleep with her, thank goodness. Still can’t believe they wanted to have a whale/ruby romance – yuck). It’s a shame, because I found that black and white world very fascinating too. But after what he said, it completely ruined it for me. Hopefully more Gepetto for me, and Archie too.
I ship Regina Mills with Happiness!

Would have been a great way to show some growth for him as he learned to accept that. They’d already shown him grudgingly accepting that magic was worthwhile when he asked Rumple to put his arm back on, and then he had the, “everyone thinks we’re monsters” bonding moment with Red, and it could have built into a great storyline for them as he came to terms with accepting magic as a part of his life and learning how it could successfully co-exist with his belief in science.
And it could serve the story well in S3 if they wanted to show him struggling with which side to choose if THO bring more of their science to SB. He’d be torn emotionally between his life’s work and his girlfriend, and it’d be some good TV.
If by some miracle they suddenly announce that Meghan will be available to shoot some stuff at the start of the season, and if David ends up back in Vancouver at the same time, I’ll be super excited. They didn’t have Whale showing interest in Ruby all the way back in S1 for no good reason. FrankenWolf were totally intended to be endgame and I’ll ship it even if we never get the chance to see it on the show now.
July 17, 2013 at 11:42 pm #200641HappyEndingsSpectatorYea, I didn’t like the Whale and Wolf thing either it seems when anyone talks to someone they are automatically a pair and it seems to happen a lot of this show. Good thing PC and Snow are married as people probably would have hooked them up with someone else. Example: Red with David 🙁
