This was the tweet that started the uproar:
It was a completely innocuous comment, the sort of shipping comment that these guys get all the time, which he felt the need to respond to in that fashion. And keep in mind this was also around the time that Ginny Goodwin posted tweets that equated a relationship between two women as pornography (which she never apologized for I might add), so people were already stirred up. Strangely when male/female relationships were asked about, they answered them politely, or at least not offensively. Hmmm, interesting.
Anders then tweeted this:
Tweet 2 (Warning – his tweet contains profanities)
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. Just because you know people who are gay, or are of a certain race or skin color, or whatever group, it does NOT give you a free pass to make offensive jokes about them. And you most certainly do not get to dictate to them whether they find it offensive or not. That’s decided by those who receive the comments.
Then Horowitz got involved, because people were tweeting him about it, and he was forced to give out a statement that he was sure they weren’t ‘those sort of people’, ‘we believe in love and equality for all’, etc, etc – the usual PR face saving stuff.
Then, presumably because his bosses or minders got to him, Anders then suddenly issued a suitably groveling apology.
I think that comment at the bottom of the pic is most telling, ‘I’m just sick of people telling me I don’t belong on tv‘
Which would have been the end of it, but he or his team obviously felt the need for more. In a cynical, and somewhat patronizing move, he then started tweeting pics of himself with Tony Amendola and a number with Lana Parrilla, who *GASP* is Latino and big LGBT supporter. Real smooth – not. I bet his PR team thought they were being exceptionally clever.
So, the whole thing was a fiasco. He’s just a really skeezy guy, his character is skeezy, and I hope they keep Ruby far away from him on the show. I’m sorta glad they cut his role back as well, plus there are too many characters anyway. And that pic he posted? It still doesn’t give him the right, or a free pass, to make homophobic comments. Sorry, it doesn’t. I wonder what his ‘friends’ would make of his comments in fact? Maybe they might just be a little uncomfortable, or disappointed, eh?

July 19, 2013 at 11:47 am #200774HappyEndingsSpectatorSorry, if you don’t agree with Ginny Goodman but I agree with her totally and support someone who has some morals and comes out and states it. Why does she need to apologize for standing up for something she believes in that is her right and mine and if you don’t agree then fine but please don’t keep slamming someone for what they believe.
July 19, 2013 at 12:36 pm #200777PheeParticipantI guess I just don’t see anything homophobic in his original tweet. Chauvanistic? Sure, he coulda worded things better, (or not commented at all), but he ultimately admitted that and apologised.
But really all he did was state the fact that Disney wasn’t necessarily likely to grant permission for an openly gay couple to be front and centre on one of their primetime, family shows. Which is probably pretty true. It shouldn’t be true, but it’s not David Anders’ fault that that social stigma is in place and ABC and Disney would probably get heat for showing it, so they might shy away from it. Perhaps he even said the original comment out of frustration over the situation himself. He’s not shy about voicing his opinion if he thinks something is full of crap.
Yes, it’s a sad state of affairs that the LGBT community is treated, perceived and represented at all differently to the straight community, because they shouldn’t be. People are people, love is love, everyone should be equal with the same rights, and I can only imagine the frustration that LGBT people feel over not being fairly represented, so yes, that comment someone sent him was very telling and sad. Hopefully there’ll be a day in the not too distant future where there will no longer be a stigma attached to it, but I say again, it’s not David’s fault that the stigma exists and that it affects the choices of his bosses, which IMO is all he was getting at with that original comment.
As for what his friends would think, well if they’re friends of his and have spent time with him, I’m guessing they’re likely accustomed to the way he expresses himself, so they likely wouldn’t take it personally. Perhaps he should be more mindful that all his Twitter followers don’t know him as well on a personal level, and things are very easily misinterpreted online, especially when you only have 140 characters.
Look, I’m no raging David Anders’ fangirl. Have only ever seen a couple of things he’s been in. I just feel that terms like “homophobe” and “bigot” shouldn’t be thrown around lightly. Dislike him for being tasteless and crass with some of his comments if you wish, I can certainly see why people would be put off by the way he speaks sometimes. Anyone is well within their rights to consider him sleazy if that’s how you see him. But judging by what I’ve seen of him, he doesn’t strike me as being a mean spirited person who finds joy in belitting and offending people for who they are by spouting hate, so IMO calling him those names is unfair. That’s all.
July 19, 2013 at 12:42 pm #200778PheeParticipantAs far as Ginny’s Twitter incident, she actually addresses it in this interview:
http://hollywoodlife.com/2013/02/07/once-upon-a-time-spoilers-snow-charming-relationship-ginnifer-goodwin-interview/I made a comment — purely trying to be funny — that most likely, at 8 o’clock on a sunday night, we’re not going to show a grandmother-granddaughter makeout scenario. I got into a lot of trouble for making that comment. People thought I was being homophobic, but really, I’m just not into incest. In defense of my character, I’m not into the idea of my daughter making out with my stepmother who tried to kill me several times.”
So, basically, she was just saying that looking at the situation from Snow’s perspective, there are plenty of reasons that SQ shouldn’t happen. Which is a fair enough opinion if you put yourself in Snow’s shoes. The fact that they’re both women isn’t what Ginny had an issue with at all.
July 19, 2013 at 1:53 pm #200783RumplesGirlKeymasterI just did some snooping and Revolution returns to NBC a few days before OUAT so I’d wager Giancarllo has to be in the earliest episode(s) of OUAT because I think he’ll be very busy with Revolution soon. Maybe they even shot his stuff earlier this summer?

they filmed like 19 or 20 mins of a pilot. But Adam did say specifically OUAT.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"July 19, 2013 at 4:23 pm #200817HappyEndingsSpectatorGiancarlo Esposito will set down Revolution baddie Tom Neville’s sword long enough to pay a return visit to Once Upon a Time this fall.
Esposito will appear in one of Season 3′s first episodes, though mum’s the word on which of his alter egos he will be playing — Storybrooke newspaper man Sidney Glass, the Evil Queen’s royally smitten Magic Mirror, or even the Genie of Agrabah.

Says, in the fall.
July 19, 2013 at 4:25 pm #200818RumplesGirlKeymasterWell it would have to be the fall, obviously. But that doens’t mean he didn’t shoot stuff over the summer if his schedule was extra busy because of Revolution. My guess is that he is going to be in SB and maybe encountering Alice. He is a genie after all, as is Cyrus. Either that or he’s been let out of the basement by Belle.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"July 19, 2013 at 4:57 pm #200819PriceofMagicParticipantI agree that I don’t see anything homophobic about David Anders’ tweet.
Also is it possible that the “issue” may not be with having a LGBT couple on OUAT but with using well known characters that have already been established as straight. For example, Belle is a popular well known Disney princess. Everyone knows that the Beast turns into a prince because of Belle’s love and although OUAT has done it’s own twist on the story with Rumple being the Beast, the basic storyline remains the same. To change that would seem that they are putting in a gay couple for the sake of it.
