There’s probably different levels of evilness in the Enchanted Forest. I mean, look at Regina. She let hate for Snow White fester in her for many decades. Vengeance consumed her once she was able to carry it out without anything holding her back. She did whatever she needed to do to kill Snow White. But that was over a much longer period of time and Regina had her heart.
It kind of makes sense because Cora didn’t have heart physically inside her that it remained bright because she wasn’t driven by her heart.
But we’ve also seen, it is possible to undarken one’s heart once you start to fill it with love again. Regina’s heart started to get bright in 3×03 when she started talking to Tink about her love for Henry. And recently, it looks like it’s gotten A LOT brighter since she’s accepted true love back into her heart.

Sure. When she was Cora post Miller’s Daughter then yes it makes sense that her heart remained in the condition it was when she took it out.
But she left Baby Zelena in the woods to die BEFORE she ever removed her heart. Leaving a baby to die in the middle of the woods should–beyond a shadow of a doubt–blacken your heart.

She looked pretty deep into the woods to me.
But this is rather beyond the point. She left a baby just out there. What? She hoped that someone might come along and take pity on the child? She could have left the baby on a doorstop, or an orphanage, or not been totally and completely selfish and raised the baby. But no, “I have to give ME MY best chance” so the baby gets left to either die or starvation, get eaten by wolves or other nasty creatures, or maybe…just maybe gets picked up by someone wandering along.
There is no “kind” way to abandon an infant.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 27, 2014 at 12:10 pm #264172KebParticipantOh, she was 100% being selfish, and her parting “lesson” to Zelena was hardly helpful (and might be what planted the “wickedness” in her).
BUT. Abandonment and infanticide are not -quite- the same level of awful. She didn’t kill Zelena, and the fact that she gave the child any kind of advice at all…and put her in a nice basket at least…suggests that she didn’t expect Zelena to necessarily die. She didn’t really care much WHAT happened as long as the child wasn’t holding her back, but she didn’t kill her.

You need to read up on your history of infanticide then, because exposure to the elements was a common way to kill a child if the pater familias decided the child wouldn’t be part of the family.

I just didn’t get the vibe that this was Cora’s intention, which puts it a sliiiiiiight step below infanticide. I don’t really mean to be a Cora apologist here, but, I’ll buy that her act wasn’t as evil as that.

Her intention is that the baby would no longer be her problem. Whether that meant death or being picked up, Cora didn’t care. But she also didn’t care enough to leave the child on a doorstep or something. If the baby had died (not been picked up by a twister) then Cora wouldn’t have cared. It’s woeful neglect. She’s responsible for what happened to the child–be it death or not. Just because she didn’t drown the child or murder Zelena herself doesn’t mean she’s not responsible for whatever outcome would have happened. Hence why Snow is still getting the lion share’s of the blame for murdering Cora.
