Rumple was brought back using the Vault of the Dark One
Not really sure I understand.
What was he—black goo? What happened?

Can we get the transcript about what Lumiere said about the vault? Did he say all the dark ones are in there or something?
It makes sense that Rumpel wasn’t dead when you think about it… He did say he was Eternal when he spoke to Smee that tine. So perhaps even after death and passing their powers a dark one can still be summoned..

Maybe it’s like a genie’s bottle in some way and the only way to escape it is to die and have your murderer assume the dark powers.
Are all the previous Dark Ones stuck in there or (more likely) only the most recent Dark One (Rumple).
It would be interesting to see more of the Dark Powers origins some day.
March 30, 2014 at 10:25 pm #257002sleepyowlParticipantIt kinda reminds me of Charmed… where the dark one could be summoned… They’re never dead… they just vanished and come back when someone summoned them by using magic.. right?
March 30, 2014 at 10:47 pm #257015schaendlichParticipantI think it’s more of a punishment for attempting to kill himself. I don’t think that Rumpel actually died. That would create a plot hole. I think he was just sealed within the Dark One’s Vault until someone else came and summoned the Dark One’s power again.

But did he know about it???? Did he know that would happen? That he’d be ZAPPED into some heretofore unmentioned black vault?!

He mentioned to Zelena that he knew what the price was to bring him back. So, It was very likely that he knew what awaited him wasn’t “death” per se. He probably just figured he’d be sealed away for eternity. That’s a pretty heavy sacrifice…
Also, the black goo, I think Lumiere said, was the darkness that the first Dark One was made of. So Rumpel didn’t die, just reverted to dark matter in a vault.

“Where the first Dark One was made, born out of the, well, darkness.”

it is a heavy sacrifice. I bet this is why he was so afraid of it, unlike a regular person, he would not just die and rest in peace, he would suffer for all eternity locked up in that dark vault…
this is why I can not believe that Neal is really dead… such a major sacrifice to make sure that his son had a chance at happiness… he will never let Bae die for him. he did some major magic when he saved Bae and lost his brain and dagger. so I am sure this big magc included another sacrifice where somehow he will save Neal, bring him back, and he will either go back into that vault or die or whatever…March 31, 2014 at 4:28 am #257195PheeParticipantit is a heavy sacrifice. this is why I can not believe that Neal is really dead…They’ve left the specifics delightfully vague. Was Rumple really ever dead in any way, shape or form? Because if not, then the “life for a life” thing wasn’t technically one person being brought back to life and another one dying, it was one person being dragged out of the DO Vault, and another person having to take their place in there? And if Rumple wasn’t actually “dead” when he was in there, then logically, Neal’s not really “dead” either, he’s just trapped in the Vault? But we got no indication of Rumple’s body having been outside the Vault, but Neal’s very definitely lying on the forest floor. Then again, Rumple was the Dark One and Neal was just a mortal, so maybe the same body vanishing rules don’t apply for both? Magic + logic = headache.
