If Rumple went to NL for the squid ink then why did Regina? We know she has a certain mermaid problem, but what caused it and why go to NL? What did she need there?
Maybe Regina wanted squid ink for herself, so she had a certain mermaid fetch it for her, and in exchange gave that mermaid legs. Regina might have wanted the squid ink to write her own spells. In 2×9, Snow White said she had witnessed Cora blow on the pages of her spell book to activate the magic, which is how she knew to blow on the parchment Rumple had written upon, which opened up the cell. This also indicates to me those spells in Cora’s spell book were also written in squid ink, since it was activated in the same way that Rumple’s spell was activated.

Good catch slurpeez! We know that Regina built in her own failsafe so she was clearly doing stuff behind Rumple’s back so it wouldn’t surprise me if she needed some squid ink of her own in order to accomplish some of that with the curse (especially if Rumple did use squid ink to write the rest of it).
I like the idea of her essentially being Ursula and it fits. I know Lana has said she’d love to be Ursula and that was awhile ago so hopefully they’re giving her what she wants so it all connects! Sounds like she struggled a bit getting what she wanted from the mermaid given that she went to Rumple for help with dealing with her but perhaps it is just that Ariel thwarts whatever her plans were and becomes an issue for her. Though why that would be a problem in a different realm I don’t know unless Regina reallllly needed some squid ink.

May 6, 2013 at 9:02 pm #191654RumplesGirlKeymasterHaving her be Ursula would be fantastic–so long as she calls Ariel a poor unfortunate soul at some point. 😆
What if she needed the squid ink for a spell to use against Snow? Almost everything Regina does goes back to her vendetta against Snow.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 6, 2013 at 9:04 pm #191655HappyEndingsSpectatorRegina didn’t know about the squid ink until Gold was telling Henry what to do to get Snow and Emma back.
May 6, 2013 at 9:06 pm #191656MysteryKat25ParticipantI’ll have to rewatch. Was she surprised that he mentioned squid ink or had she never heard of squid ink before? Sometimes with Regina it’s playing dumb and sometimes she’s just shocked that somebody else knows something she thought was a well-kept secret (ie: “Who is Jefferson?” *smacks forehead*)

May 6, 2013 at 9:08 pm #191658RumplesGirlKeymasterJust checked the transcript. Regina never expresses shock about the squid ink. Rumple tells Henry the bedtime story and Regina just listens. I think it’s very possible she already knew about it.

Thanks RG!
Regina is one of those characters who actually can keep some stuff close to the vest for a time so she may have just quietly listened but wasn’t surprised really because she’s known about it for some time.
1) We know she knows about mermaids since she was having issues with one
2) She’s known Rumple a lot longer / better than most and knows it is always all about the wording, especially when making deals with him so also knows that sometimes it’s best to keep ones mouth shut or feign surprise (like at the beginning of the entire show where she had no idea about this silly fairy tale obsession Henry had – she was surprised about the book, but kept laughing off the idea that she was the Evil Queen when she obviously knew who she was. Similar to the “Who is Jefferson?” line instead of “You know Jefferson!?!?” Regina pretends not to know or understand things when it suits her)I’m pretty confident that something, probably squid ink, took at least Rumple if not Regina to Neverland to deal with mermaids. The question that remains, other than what did Regina want there, is did she ever get any help from Rumple or not – he wanted her to enact the curse, but he fell apart after she told him Belle died so I don’t see him helping her after that – so did she ever get what she wanted? And if so how? And what was it?
I would guess that Rumple went to Neverland many years earlier to fit in with other events on the timeline but adding Regina into Neverland is making sense and making my head spin all at the same time regarding the timeline and what drove her/them there and back.

May 6, 2013 at 9:20 pm #191662RumplesGirlKeymasterIt would tie up a lot of loose ends if it was the squid ink from Neverland and both Rumple and Regina needed it. It would tie up:
1) The squid ink story
2) The certain mermaid comment
3) The history of Jefferson and Regina (at least some of it)
4) If Rumple went to NL and Bae found out, it’s the perfect reason for why Bae would flee back to our world."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 6, 2013 at 10:03 pm #191670MysteryKat25Participant@RumplesGirl wrote:

Now we just have to figure out Rumple got there and when in the timeline as well. If he took him til 1991 or so (I think that’s the date it was decided Bae came here), why did it take him so long?
There’s also the question of when/how did Regina solve her mermaid problem since she & Rumple weren’t exactly on good terms after her speech about Belle…
It would tie up the comment from Hook though who seemed to know that Bae wanted to stay hidden from Rumple and that it wasn’t just an offhand comment like “wouldnt’ anybody?” kind of thing. He genuinely seemed to know something which ties back to his earlier comments about the Lost Boys in Tallahassee. I think Hook too has a soft spot for children (good ones at least – sinister 16 year olds that could be focused on hurting him / his new friend Bae could be another story entirely lol). I like the idea of twisting it around though.

I’m thinking Bae had unfinished business in NL. Hey may have had to capture the Shadow, become the Pan, and free all the Lost Boys before he could travel to Earth and grow up.

The mermaid line could have been a plot on Regina’s part, since she may have only wanted an excuse the visit Rumple in his Dark Castle; her real aim was to deliver the news that Belle had died. Regina probably could resolve that issue without Rumple’s help, as she was already a formidable sorceress by that time.
