Maybe Bae finally telling Wendy his name was Bae, out loud, triggered the shadow to seek him out in that home. It’s a good parallel to the real Rumpelstiltskin tale, where they find out his name when he sings it out loud around a fire.
That’s an awesome thought. Names are important to the Rumpelstitskin story.
You know what this reminds to me of also:
In the last Harry Potter book, Voldermort puts a curse on his name so that when anyone speaks it aloud, he would know exactly where they were.Rumple could have put the same sort of spell on Bae’s name. If Bae said his name, the shadow would be able to find him. It wouldn’t have worked when Bae grew up because he went by Neal.
😯 That’s an excellent theory!

That’s great! And if Bae figures it out at some point, he could change his name before he ever even left NL. Maybe to Peter….
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 8, 2013 at 6:56 pm #192291MysteryKat25ParticipantI am completely on board with this! If the name has a connection (and it would make sense for Rumple to at least try) and Bae figures it out, it’s a perfectly logical reason to change his name and I’ve been a big proponent of name-changing theories cause I don’t think he jumped straight to Neal. I really think it was Peter and then when he got to our world he had to change it for 1 of 2 reasons if not both:
1) Try introducing yourself as Peter Pan…seriously that’s not going to fly (pun intended) in our world. He’d be mocked and/or sent to a mental institution
2) Anybody in Neverland would know him and if Rumple went there looking for him and asked / tortured the right person, they could say well he’s going by Peter now and he was last seen….
It just doesn’t make sense to keep the same name if he ever gets to the point where is afraid of Rumple finding him (which he obviously does, the question is how?)
I think that he’s perfectly find using the name Baelfire right now and doesn’t seem to have a problem with it, nor is he worried about his dad.
What if Rumple DOES go to Neverland (be it to follow a name tracking spell, or to find squid ink, etc etc) and Bae SEES him / doesn’t like what he’s doing. For instance if he is going around interrogating people and Bae sees or hears something he may lead him away from it by leaving clues that he’s left and then actually leave but change his name and go somewhere Rumple can’t get to him again.
The only issue I see in that is that young Bae likes to fight. He’s not afraid to stand up to anybody, including his father. (Seriously who else could tell Rumple that they don’t like what he’s doing and what he’s become and beg him to change and get away with it?)
I think something has to change along the way for Bae to go from being sad / having nightmares about his father leaving him to being afraid he’ll ever find him. Seeing / overhearing / learning of something in Neverland could change that.
There’s also the question of his relationship with Hook and whether Hook puts it all together & tells Bae what his father has done. That could trigger things too, finally learning about Milah’s fate and realizing that his father is even more of a monster now that he’s gone than he was before he let Bae go through the portal.

Loving this idea! 🙂

😆
For all we know he could have changed his name several times, he is at least a few hundred years old, right!?
May 8, 2013 at 8:12 pm #192315MysteryKat25ParticipantHe’s a couple hundred years old and apparently jumped a lot of time in that vortex going from EF to Victorian London and I think time is linear for him after that (although it’ll feel like he’s been in Neverland for longer than real world time so maybe in a way it all evens out for him).
He could have changed his name many times between 1907 (was that the year he landed? I can’t remember) and now. He should have showed back up to our world around I think 1991 and he could have changed it a few times since then for sure, though his present name has nods back to Peter Pan. Granted as a thief he may have changed it a couple times in between to try not to get caught, but I don’t see him as the slickest of con-men who can remember which lie they’re telling every moment of every day to change it up constantly either, though he could have changed it every once in awhile for something new. Neal Cassidy he may be, Neal Caffrey he is not – recently became obsessed with White Collar so hopefully some of you get/enjoy the reference 😉

May 8, 2013 at 10:54 pm #192348belle of the ballParticipantI love the idea of Bae’s name being a flag for the Shadow! It fits perfectly into the Rumple storyline, even if I am not sold on the idea that Rumple has anything to do with the shadow or NL. But this idea sure does take me a step closer to jumping on that boat! I am not letting go of the Bae as Pan theory – i think the significance of Wendy telling Bae that he could not touch the soil was the key. So far, he has not touched soil, just the waters surrounding NL. I think at some point the shadow will come looking for Bae and perhaps attach itself to him. It is from here that Bae gains the ability to fly and therefore never does have to touch the ground in NL, allowing him to come to our world/save the lost boys.
I wonder if the shadow attaches itself to Bae, if it may still be triggered when his name is spoken. Perhaps Wendy says his name and he is whisked back to the Darlings and it is then he understands she needs to refer to him by a different name *cough* Peter *cough*. And so the name change begins!
I also agree that there was a reason Wendy mentioned Mermaids in NL. Of course, Mermaid Lagoon was important to Wendy in Disney’s animated feature, but this is our third mention of mermaids and we haven’t seen an Ariel yet! Are they trying to heart my Disney heart? 😥
I cant wait to see how the Bae/Hook theme plays out. As the only son of Milah, I cant help but wonder if he will take Bae under his wing and pose as a father like figure for the boy. After all, what would hurt Rumple more than seeing his wife’s lover as a better father to his son than he was?

I don’t think we’re going to see her until S3, but I have faith that we will see her. (Of course some think we’ll see her in this Sunday’s episode)

I think this is exactly what will happen. It has more story potential in it if Hook and Bae were father/son-like.

I agree. The reveal of what was in the box was my one critique of Manhattan and if it had a deeper meaning then I’ll be happy.
