TVLine Jan 11: Casting Tiger Lily

TVLine has learned that the ABC drama is casting the role of Tiger Lily, who in fairy tale lore is the princess of the Piccaninny tribe of Native Americans living on the island of Neverland (which Once visited in Season 3). In assorted incarnations, she has crushed on Peter Pan and been tormented by Captain Hook.

Once‘s version of the character, to recur starting with Episode 17, is described as “a force to be reckoned with.” Determined and resourceful, “she’s the kind of woman who’ll risk her life to save yours — and she’ll do it even quicker if it benefits her.” Beneath Tiger Lily’s tough exterior is someone who isn’t afraid to accept help, even if she’s reluctant to ask for it.

And yes, it’s safe to say that she and a certain hook-handed pirate have crossed paths.

Once Upon a Time — which resumes Season 6 on Sunday, March 5, with Episode 11 — is seeking a Native American actress in her late 20s to early 30s to fill the role.

Ooookaaaay. I suspect that means we’re getting a Hook-centric in 617 to least introduce her? I don’t know if Robbie Kay can come back or not (didn’t he get a new gig?)

And here for the longest time I thought they were intentionally avoiding depicting Tiger Lily or any of Neverland’s Native Americans for racial sensitivity reasons. Even if Adam and Eddy themselves considered it, I thought ABC would shut them down. Neverland’s Native Americans have been controversial for quite some time due to the associated racial stereotypes. So I guess since they’re actually doing it, they’ll still need to be incredibly careful in how she’s depicted onscreen. They’re casting an actual Native American actress, so I guess that’s a decent start. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take some influence from Pocahontas in their portrayal of her, since they may still want to avoid actually including her on the show.

Soooo…I take it we’re taking a trip back to Neverland? Or will she be coming to Storybrooke? If mermaids can travel between realms, I wonder if that is why they’re also bringing up Ariel so she can maybe relay a message to Tiger Lily.

Now i ask one question? is this really Tiger lily or a decoy to cast pocahontas?because in the article they hint that she will be recurring in more epis, starting 617.
If was Tiger lily she would only need to be in one episode, not more, for example with Tink also returning appears for one episode bc of OQ, and didnt A&E said there were no plans to bring Pan back? why they are going back to Neverland story now? i dont think is Tiger lily at all, i think this is a decoy like merida casting and they are casting Pocahontas instead.

Two points. 1) like Matt I am pretty worried about Adam and Eddy attempting to write a character that is already a product of its time (the Peter Pan song about red men makes my insides uncomfortable). The writers of OUAT aren’t exactly known for considerate cultural depictions. They sorta exist in stereoeotypes

2) Rainbow point is an interesting one. It wouldn’t be the first time they lied about a casting (Merida, anyone?). But… since pochaontas is a real person from a real time period and from our realm…Well maybe that doesn’t matter anymore but it used to be the reason why they wouldn’t/couldn’t do her character.

As the relationship between Hook and Emma matures, there needs to be a complication. I fully expect the complication to be Hook’s secret daughter, named after her mom.

I think Pocahontas is quite likely. They’ve already dipped their toe into “historical figures waters” with Blackbeard. But I would prefer it to be Tiger Lily. This could be a chance to answer some Neverland questions, like how Pan had the Henry drawing? One can #HOPE.
