This occurred to be the other day and I was hoping to hear other opinions.
Magic given/transfered or can it be inherited?
I realized that we have no proof of magic being passed down from parents to child, which makes me think it is something that can be given or transferred. Rumple got his powers from the Dark one, Cora got her powers from ‘deals’ and presumably Regina eventually gains them the same way.
This thought lead me to think that maybe there is only a certain amount of Magin in FTL, where its not a gene trait but something you are given or that you take from another. Maybe it isn’t something you can create more of.
Just thought I’d share my random magin in FTL thoughts. 🙂

I’m not sure if it can be inherited…I think Cora got her magic out of a deal with Rumpel because she told Regina she had to “make many deals to get them where they are today”. Maybe magic got into Emma after she was transported in that portal tree?

I agree, hmm, I think her power came from the BL that helped with the tree’s magic.
Speaking of: I wonder where Fairy Dust comes from and if more can be made or found. I may be forgetting something, so tell me if so, but I think the dust comes from the fairies right?
If I am remembering correctly, and if all the magic/power originates from the Fairies/Fairy dust, wouldn’t that mean that killing all the fairies would end the new supply of magic?
Which seems like a good way to be the most powerful *assuming you are in FTL and not SB*:
You take the powers of those that currently have them, Rumple, Regina etc and then kill off the fairies, ending the ability of others to gain magic/power so no one could defeat you.Evil plan FTW

In episode Dreamy we find out that the dwarfs collect fairy dust in the mines. Nova was in charge of retrieving it.
I hope a massacre of fairies doesn’t happen! 😯 I think it would be impossible to wipe off the existence of magic in FTL. It’s all around. It makes up their world.

The former seems to be acquired by taking it away from a possessor (and so far, it seems the only way to do that is by killing). The latter type of magic seems to be learned (Rumple’s lab and books, the recipe for the sleeping spell and the dark curse) . But whether a person has to have inner magic in order to use the substance magic remains to be seen.
I’m looking forward to seeing how Cora and Regina got their powers (I suspect Regina got hers by killing Cora, then apprenticed under Rumple to learn the substance magic.) I’d. also like to see the birth and development of a fairy. And Jefferson–is his magic limited to a sole substance?
Morraine does say something about the Reul Ghorm being “the original power…bigger than anything.”
