Just want to point out, the phone August used to call is not like the telephones we have today, it was an very old style type of phone. Like this one.
To call out, you would only need to make three dials.
I was having a debate with a friend over this. She was very insistent that he was just talking to Henry on the phone, but I don’t think it sounded as if he was talking to a kid.
The reason your friend probably thinks that, is because in the next scene, August is with Henry just outside Mr. Gold’s shop. But I think he was talking to Mother Superior.
I don’t think it sounded like he was talking to a child either, but someone asked Jane Espenson on Twitter and she replied: @kabernat he called Henry. They met up in next scene.
Meh, Mother Superior woulda been cooler. 😛
OK. 😀
Well that’s disappointing. I’m just going to stick with my headcanon on this one anyway.
I am glad they said.
I find that very strange – and I say that even though I’m not really all that concerned with who he called on the phone. But the way he talked to the person on the phone did NOT sound at ALL the way he has EVER talked to Henry before nor did it sound the way he spoke to Henry AFTER the phone call. He always speaks very cryptically to Henry but you can always tell he is speaking to a child. It sounded as if the person he was speaking to on the phone was an adult who understood his personal reasons for needing to move things along faster; someone who was very familiar with August. And when he spoke to Henry outside of Gold’s pawnshop Henry didn’t understand why they were doing what they were doing which seems inconsistent with the person he had spoken to on the phone. And August acted like he was surprised by Henry’s response – as if they were still getting to know each other because they had only recently met.
I hate to bring this up because I know it was mentioned before as a possible theory for August’s identity, but if Jane Espensen is telling the truth what if there is an adult version of Henry somewhere out there?? That is the only way I can even begin to believe that August was speaking to Henry like that on the phone.
After reading what Espenson said I quickly thought that she meant that August called Henry after he called the “unknown” person. I really wanted him to have called mother superior but oh well. 🙁

Ahh, no … the phone wasn’t THAT old. It was a regular bone-style headset from about 20 years ago. (28? lol) but the three-digit calling IS interesting, and a deliberate plot point IMHO, either to throw us off or present yet another cryptic clue.
