But the way he talked to the person on the phone did NOT sound at ALL the way he has EVER talked to Henry before nor did it sound the way he spoke to Henry AFTER the phone call. He always speaks very cryptically to Henry but you can always tell he is speaking to a child. It sounded as if the person he was speaking to on the phone was an adult who understood his personal reasons for needing to move things along faster; someone who was very familiar with August. And when he spoke to Henry outside of Gold’s pawnshop Henry didn’t understand why they were doing what they were doing which seems inconsistent with the person he had spoken to on the phone. And August acted like he was surprised by Henry’s response – as if they were still getting to know each other because they had only recently met.
Since Jane Espenson wrote this episode, and she tweeted that August called Henry, I’m going to accept that as fact and chalk the whole phone conversation up to bad acting on the part of Eion Bailey (the actor who plays August.) That’s the most reasonable answer I think.
Hey, this is still a TV show, by human actors. Not EVERYTHING has to be perfect and have some hidden clue behind it.
I think that because it was a sneak peek clip that everyone was wondering for a couple of days who August was calling so that made it seem like it was important, but it was Henry. I thought that was interesting enough.
I don’t think that August called Henry. The tone he was using with the person on the other end of the line was quite different from the tone he has used with Henry in every scene we have seen them in together. I was thinking that he called Bae and it was him that suggested he focus his attentions on Mr. Gold/the dagger. The only thing is, Bae would have told him that trying to use the dagger to control his father wouldn’t work. Mr. Gold said himself that his son would never try that because he knew better. Unless Bae thought it might work because Emma has magic, so our world isn’t “without magic” after all. It would also make sense that it was August’s idea to look for the dagger and he was so desperate to live that he ignored Bae’s advice to focus on Emma and not Mr. Gold. I can’t believe I’m racking my brain like this over a television show. I haven’t concentrated this hard since college….well, since Lost.
I thought it was confirmed by Jane Esperson via a tweet that August called Henry. Did I miss something otherwise?
I think she answered in a way like it seemed he called Henry. I could be wrong, but I got the feeling she could have been being coy. I don’t remember it sounding like her positively confirming it. Unless you guys have heard something I missed. Maybe I shouldn’t write my theories without reading every thread.
