It may have more to do in this particular case with Henry than with which mother kissed him.
Why would it have to be Henry who was kissed? If there aren’t any established rules about who could break this particular curse, then it could have just as easily have been Snow White kissing Emma which broke the curse. But then again, it didn’t have to be a maternal or paternal true love kiss, did it? It could just as easily have been a romantic TLK.
It’s clear Regina loves Henry just as truly as Emma does. Regina was the first one to kiss Henry, and it worked. That’s not in question. What remains a mystery to me are the rules of what make a person able to break the dark curse. In S1, there were clearly established “rules” about only Emma being the savior because she was the product of the true love that Rumple had added to the parchment on which the curse had been written.
This time around, there were no established “rules” and as such, it remains unclear why unless Regina added a safety valve of her own to this rehashed curse. (We didn’t see how Regina concocted the ingredients or what recipe she followed since she’d destroyed the piece of parchment on which the first curse had been written). Maybe we’re just to assume there was no written recipe this time and Regina added all the ingredients from memory, in which case, maybe there are no set rules about who could break this particular curse. I’ll just chalk it up to handwaving and say it’s because Regina has true love for her son that she was able to break the curse.

I’m not asking why Regina’s TLK worked, but rather how they made her the Curse Breaker when Emma had to be MADE the Savior by Rumple with True Love potion.
I’m not trying to take away Regina and Henry’s love for each other. That I’m 100% okay with; it’s that there is no explanation for “why Regina is capable of breaking the curse”

It seems to me that Henry is the only light in Regina’s darkness. Looking back at the season 3 promo where Regina’s poster said “Believe that a mother’s love is stronger than her dark heart”, I think maybe it was because aside from her father (excluding Daniel and Robin), the only person Regina truly loved is Henry. So perhaps when Regina kissed Henry, it was her genuine love for her son that broke the curse. Plus, Regina can “feel” even without her heart; that’s got to be saying something. After all, true love can break any curse. As to why her, I think the promo poster says it all, her love (with or without a heart) is stronger than her dark heart, which is clearly enough to break her sister’s forgetting potion.

And maybe Emma’s kiss didn’t work because in her heart she secretly didn’t want Henry to regain his memories. She was still hoping that after everything is over she could take him back to New York and leave behind the fairy tale world.
April 29, 2014 at 4:42 pm #264920HappyEndingsSpectatorThis is why Regina wanted to do the sleeping curse in FTL so Henry has to wake her up so she changed the curse to fit her. The reason why they didn’t end up back in FTL is the same reason Rumple did it Regina wanted to be with Henry.

But they are two different curses? Or am I misunderstanding you?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 29, 2014 at 4:49 pm #264924HappyEndingsSpectatorYea you are I am referring to what she wanted to do in FTL but couldn’t that is she missed Henry and wanted him to wake her up. So she added to the curse the they just did that in a way Henry would be her savior and would have broken the sleeping curse if she was in FTL but since he wasn’t in FTL she made it so he and her had to break the curse.
As for not returning back to FTL, like I stated she pulled and Rumple and made the curse so they wouldn’t go back that she would be able to stay with Henry in SB once again.
April 29, 2014 at 6:21 pm #264937RumplesGirlKeymasterI’ll accept that Regina did something to the curse that we didn’t see on screen.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 29, 2014 at 7:35 pm #264958HappyEndingsSpectatorRegina had no intention of going back to FTL, she wasn’t happy without Henry and I still think she hates Snow since we are yet to get an apology from Regina. She knew Emma would bring Henry to SB and that is exactly what she got she really had no intention in saving Snow’s baby Regina wanted her old life back imo.
Makes you wonder why didn’t Regina offer her heart for David instead of takings Snows???
April 29, 2014 at 7:36 pm #264959obisgirlParticipantI think a True Love’s kiss between Henry and Regina was coming.
Since the end of season one, we knew that Regina truly loved Henry and by the end of season two, Henry truly loved her back too. So, I think a kiss between them was inevitable.
I also remember reading a theory on tumblr that maybe the curse would be broken from TLK between Henry and Regina, and knowing that each curse when it’s cast, is different, or tailor made, it made sense that it was Regina who needed to break the curse.
Emma will still play a role on taking down the wicked witch, but TLK needed to be between Regina and Henry.
