ParticipantI don’t think his favor will be a power play but I do think he has enough leverage & say so to make sure that Emma upholds her end of the deal. After all, he goes to great lengths to explain to her that rules are rather like deals & they’re what make things run smoothly in this world. So that leads me to believe that if Emma did choose to ignore her ‘debt’ to Gold, then it would throw things off balance & perhaps lead to dire repercussions, not only for Emma but for those she cares about. But as for what he’ll ask for, I truly believe that after the events of ‘Hat Trick’, he’ll ask her to side with him, and use her magic ( that she may or may not have – I think she has magic ) to help him meet his goals; whatever they may be.

ParticipantThere are more pictures in the hall before Emma gets caught just before she enters the room where MM is tied up.
As for the one picture in the room with MM, it looks like a hand-drawn stick-figure color drawing that a child would have done, as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to screen-cap either or I’d pull these pictures for you myself. ( I’m guessing you’re referring to the two – on either side of MM though. )
Alas, it seems both you & I are woefully inept when it comes to screen-captures.

ParticipantI’m the same way. I give a book around 50 pgs. to make me feel invested. If I’m not still interested with the characters or the ‘conflict’ or stakes that the book is trying to sell, then I quit reading. I read quite a few books myself but as of late, I have been using audio-books more. It’s great, especially for long-drives or just everyday commutes ( like the 1. 15 hr. commute I make every Mon – Fri. – that adds up fast. So audio-books help me finish on average about 2 books/week. )
Some of the classics are long-winded though. I just got through reading Middlemarch & God, I thought that book would never end! But then again, Victorian era books are notoriously preachy & crammed with social commentary in regards to the times.

ParticipantI think the rules behind the hat are put in place as a sort of fail-safe, by the person who imbued the hat with magic; who in this case I think would probably have to be one of the fairies, I'm thinking the Blue Fairy in particular. Seeing as we've seen the Blue Fairy work with other FTL characters before ( Cinderella – to help capture & imprison Rumpelstiltskin / as well as Snow & Charming, seeing as she was a part of their council meeting & she was the one who assured them that Gepetto would be able to craft a safe passage for baby Emma; the wardrobe. )
So I don't really believe that Jefferson is a magic user. Both in SB & FTL he just happened to know the rules/laws of an object that had been imbued with magic. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone mad in Wonderland trying to make another magic hat. He would have made one & been done with it.

Participant@hjbau: It’s actually a rather quick read at only 115 give or take pages; which really it’s less than that because of the various poems peppered throughout the text & the illustrations.
The only rub I have about it now, having read it several times is how Carroll was rather bad at using hanging sentences; although it served a purpose & I’m sure he probably did it purposefully.
Either way both ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ , ‘Through the Looking-Glass’ & his various verse are worth reading. In fact, when I was talking to someone in the forums who thought the Red Queen looked like an elephant, I almost quoted some Carroll to them.
In fact, “The Mad Gardener’s Song” would have fit the situation perfectly. It goes as such:
“He thought he saw an elephant,
that practiced on a fife:
He looked again and found it was
A letter from his wife.
‘At length I realize’, he said,
‘The bitterness of Life!'”

ParticipantIt’s a possibility.
It would fall more in line with the original book version of ‘Through the Looking Glass’ because in the book Alice really does become a Queen. Although, it’s a rather short-lived regency considering both the Red & White Queens invite a great deal of looking-glass dwellers to a dinner party for Alice, where she grows; quite literally – tired of their riddles & eccentricities. ( I think this is somewhat portrayed in the Disney version, although very briefly. In the movie Alice runs away from the Red Queen & her guard to the doorknob where she’s pleading for him to open the door & he informs her she’s just through the keyhole asleep. / In the book she realizes she’s been asleep based upon the fact that she grows in height & proceeds to tell the Red Queen that’s she’s tired of her temper & she’ll shake her into a kitten – which she does. )// Wow. I really got off-topic, maybe I should just make a new thread in the character section for Alice.

Also – no foundation for this theory, just a thought –, maybe his wife was Alice. ^.^ I don’t think his daughter is Alice, ’cause she’s already got two names.
@Mia: If you go by the book version there is some validation to your theory in regards to Alice. In ‘Through the Looking Glass’ – the 9th chapter is entitled ‘Queen Alice’. Because, after dutifully playing the game set forth by the Red Queen, Alice literally tumbles into her crown. There’s even a song about it in the book, that goes like this – –
” I’ve a scepter in hand, I’ve a crown on my head.
Let the looking glass creatures, whatever they be,
come & dine with the Red Queen, the White Queen & Me.
. . . And welcome Queen Alice with thirty-times-three! “By that logic, I’m inclined to side with your theory that Jefferson’s wife was in fact, Alice.

ParticipantShe mentioned the mermaid in Skin Deep, if I’m not mistaken. However, there are mermaids in Peter Pan although I highly doubt she’s referencing them, in all likelihood, she’s talking about Ariel.
It is possible Atlantica is part of that sea, but seeing as it’s water, my mind wandered off & started thinking about what August said about water ( having magical properties ) … makes me wonder. How all we know, water could also be used as a portal, I think Jefferson’s hat allows you to choose which world you’ll end up in via the doors. Whereas other methods are probably less specific, in particular, the wardrobe that Emma was placed in, I mean, they didn’t know what world she’d end up in.After re-watching ‘Hat Trick’, I’m pretty convinced that anyone could use the hat, it’s just the fact that for it to work – 1) the hat must have magic & 2) You must follow the rules which the magic imbued in the hat lays out ( ie – for Wonderland’s Looking Glass it was – two enter – two leave – & Jefferson clearly states that not his rule, it’s the hat’s. )
So that makes me think that Jefferson had to trade something in order to get the magic for this hat in the first place.
( On a completely different note – I wondered upon re-watching the episode *upon a 3rd viewing* if perhaps Jefferson’s wife was even from FTL to begin with. Upon which I had the crack-pot theory that since Grace is Grace in FTL & Paige in SB – perhaps Jefferson met Grace’s mother – Alice in Wonderland & used the hat to bring her back to FTL. … just a fun little theory. It might also tie-in to who the Red Queen is – because in the original tale ‘Through the Looking Glass’ – Alice does stay for an amount of time & rule over Wonderland. )

Participant@weedith: Alright that sounds acceptable.
In that case would you please add the well seen outside of Jefferson’s house in ‘Hat Trick’ as well as the Well which Thomas disappears near in ‘Price of Gold’?Thanks.

Participant@slurpeez108: I’m putting my money on Oz. Primarily because the door looks like curtains, which is central in the story because of the ‘pay no attention to the man behind the curtain’ line near the end. ( Also thanks for the screen-shot. I’m noticing some patterns on the floor outside what I’d initially mentioned. Hm… )
@Mia: I kept wondering about that one. My initial thought for some reason dealt with Valentine’s Day – however I now submit to your idea/theory in regards to that door. Looks oriental & could very well be Mulan.
@Sjm: Lol I might be Regina’s reflection yes but perhaps it really is a Chimney, as a sort of nod to Mary Poppins perhaps? If it is Regina’s reflection though, then does that mean there is another mirror directly behind the looking glass? I mean, based on slurpeez screen-caps I saw there was another door that had a mirror on it – but it wasn’t full length & it would have to be to cast her full reflection.
Another world would/could be Atlantica ( the Little Mermaid ) although, a part of me would want them to have to go through water to get there. So none of these doors directly correlate, at least, I don’t think so.
