ParticipantYeah, i think that everyone from now on is going to be new characters. They let Emma, Snow, Charming, and Belle go. I think with them pretty much all the old story went, so Maleficent and Lily and all of the old witches from Storybrooke are gone. Whatever they introduce is going to be from the new storybook.
I know it said in that article that Regina and Zelena might be two of the witches, but that doesn’t really make sense to me. I guess they could be if they are threatened to use their power just like Regina was threatened to do the curse.

ParticipantYeah, i think there were things in this that maybe shouldn’t have been in the like second episode, but showing baby Lucy, showing Henry and Ella married, Rumpel acting weird, the introduction of Robyn, some of the curse stuff could have been introduced. I think that some of this felt more like setup to an arc, by opening all these questions, instead of a conclusion to an ark.
I think they could have had a scene with Gothel about the curse early on and still kept that Drizella was involved out of it. The problem being that the writers have no plan. They are literally writing as they go. They don’t know how the arc is going to end when they start writing the beginning, either that or the only thing they know is the beginning and the end and that is why the middle doesn’t fit.
I just know that before this season started the most important thing, in my opinion, was making sure they replaced the female protagonist and started new mysteries and i feel like a lot of this could have helped it. Instead, they spent the early part of the season trying to finish off last season.
I think the only mystery that was interesting this season was that Drizella was evil. A lot of people were assuming that Tremaine was Rapunzel and that Alice was Hook’s daughter pretty early on. The only mystery in that was that Gothel is Alice’s mother, but she has really just been like an egg donor. Gothel doesn’t seem to actually be involved with Alice in any way. I wonder if she even knows that Alice is her daughter.
It just really feels like there is information in here that they could have hinted at over the first five or so episodes that would have really helped it along. The first episodes were definitely the weakest of this arc. I can just see their failure to plan all over this episode.

Participant3) We met a lot of new characters! Who was your favorite? Least favorite?
I like Drizella and Alice. I don’t like Drizella’s accent, but if i pretend that isn’t happening she has had the most interesting storyline, though they need to do a much better job explaining her issues with her mother. I am hoping now that they are trapped in the well together, that that will happen. I do like Alice, but she has not been properly developed. I don’t like any version of Hook, so her being related to him is the low point. I am looking forward to them showing her relationship with Robyn even though i am not convinced that they will do a very good job with that. Robyn being related to Zelena and Regina and therefore them being invested in Alice’s well being because of her relationship with Robyn is a better connection.
4) Who do you miss the most from the first six seasons?
The show does not work without a good female protagonist. That was Emma and Snow in the early seasons, then just Emma later on. Ella is unlikable. They have not developed her in any ways that would make her interesting. We still know too little about her past. We still know too little about how she really thinks. Her being cursed just makes all of this wasted time spent on her on again/off again with Henry and her fighting with Tremaine and with her behavior all being because she is cursed and so everything she does is pointless.
Even in the flashbacks, she is not at all like Snow, which was the pitch. She has a sword, but all she did was try to kill a guy that didn’t deserve to be killed in the first episode and then join a resistance that has done nothing and we know is going to go no where because now Tremaine is working with them. Snow was strong in Season 1 because we saw her going toe to toe with Regina and it was awesome, and while it wasn’t perfectly written, there was real loss and anger and depth behind their feud. There is none of that with Ella and Tremaine. We also saw Snow and Charming fall in love and it was sweet and you got why they would like each other, we have seen nothing that would make me think that Henry would like Ella except she is pretty.
This show does not work without Emma and it hasn’t worked without Snow for many seasons, in my opinion. The show needs that main female protagonist not just varying degrees of villains that go from evil rapist to some form of crazy. Henry cannot take this spot. It had to be Ella and her character has not remotely filled the hole in this show.
6) What storyline would you change if you could?
For me, the one thing i would change would be them wasting time this season finishing off the characters that were gone. Emma should have died or been finished off last season. She should not have been in this half at all. I know people like that Rumpel episode, but that should have happened either last season or been the second episode, and then been done with. They spent way too much time in the early episodes on characters that no longer matter like Emma and real Hook and Belle. They needed to spend all that wasted time on developing Ella first and foremost as a character in her own right and then on developing Henry and Ella’s relationship.
In Season 1 the show was hardcore in the first episodes, showing us who Emma was, showing us she wanted to protect Henry, showing us that she was willing to help others, showing her going to toe to toe with Regina just like her mother. In the early seasons we are immediately introduced to Snow and Charming and we see them fall in love in pretty much in one episode and it worked. The blanks were filled in over time, but that one episode was the stage that the entire relationship was developed on. We are shown Emma and Snow having important conversations about Henry by the second episode. We saw Regina’s development as the villain with a backstory in the second episode. The new Ouat in Season 7 waste those early episodes on characters that are no longer important to the show. That should have all been finished last season.
7) What are you hoping for in S7B?
Character development is always my wish. I want them to give Ella a personality and show us how she ticks. They should explain how she feels about what happened with her parents, how she feels about her mother leaving, how she feels about Anastasia almost dying, and how she feels about Drizella. Does she consider Drizella her sister and Tremaine like a mother? There can be no growth till they show us where she is at. I want them to have Drizella and Tremaine talk about their issues. I want them to show Henry and Ella fall in love. I want them to show Alice and Robyn fall in love. I want them to show Gothel’s motivation and show us what she is doing and why. It is rough because there is really nothing i want out of Regina, Rumpel, or Zelena. They are fun characters to move around, but there isn’t a lot of development going on there with any of them. Hook, whether fake or not, always just needs to die. He won’t, but i will never stop hoping for it.
8) Rate and/or grade S7A as a whole!
This show is a fail as it has been for about four years. There is no proper character development. The characters choices don’t move the plot forward. This episode with its like eight random plot objects proves that. The characters never have real choices. They introduced all these new characters and for most of the we don’t know enough about them to even discuss what they might do. Character development. World building. It is a whole thing and the writers should start doing it.

ParticipantI like the idea of Alice and Robyn as a couple, but they are not major characters on this show. Alice has been barely developed at all. She is related, but just to fake Hook who is no one and Gothel who is like the dead man walking. Robyn is related to Zelena and Regina, but she just popped up out of nowhere and doesn’t have a personality yet. They are going to have to do a lot more to make that a real relationship because i don’t care about those characters yet. I am not convinced they can do it, especially after how badly they have developed Henry and Ella’s relationship.

ParticipantThere is no good explanation for why Emma, Snow, and Charming are not helping with Henry’s problems. It just doesn’t make sense and the show doesn’t work because of it. If Zelena and Robyn can be there, then so can Emma. Emma being pregnant and having another child is not remotely a good reason to not be part of her son’s life.
Emma is my favorite character, but this is why when it comes down to it the only explanation for her not being there is that she is dead. They should have killed her off.

ParticipantThere were a lot of magical deus ex machinas going on here. The white elephant. The blood magic turns people to stone curse, for EIGHT years. The wrist vines that steal magic. Geppetto’s ax and the new wardrobe tree. The new curse needs blood from someone who crushed the heart of the thing they loved most. Henry’s poison that can only be stopped by going to a non magical realm. It was just too much nonsense going on there.

ParticipantZelena saying that saving people is what heroes do even over their family was ridiculous. There doesn’t need to be a choice there. Call the guy, say you have a family emergency, if he loves her and she loves him, then they can wait a bit. They could also read him in on what is going on.
The writers idea of self sacrifice for the people, the way they talk about it just doesn’t make sense. A character can be a hero and do the right thing and still take care of their family and still have real romantic love and a happy life.

ParticipantI agree that it would have been better if the kiss between Henry and Lucy actually worked, though their reasoning is consistent.
I still don’t think Anastasia is the guardian. I think that Gothel just wants to use her, so she said that so that Rumpel would wake her. Gothel has some sort of plan that we know nothing about.

ParticipantThis episode was really random, in my opinion. Just out of nowhere Henry and Ella have a child. We haven’t even seen them fall in love yet. Then they just skip eight years later. Why did they keep that statue in their castle? Why did they not remember the prophecy?
Regina’s throw away line about the timeline is just the writers being jerks. They are terrible about details and terrible about world building and they just don’t care. That stuff matters. What makes a story good is the details.
Rumpel being imp like was really random. I, also, thought that maybe he was a second Rumpel for a moment.
They didn’t explain why Drizella was suddenly attacking Ella and Henry. They didn’t explain why Tremaine was helping them stop her. They didn’t explain where Zelena and Robyn were.
Lucy being unconscious seems to have to do with Anastasia being awake and Lucy’s belief being gone, so why they are connecting that to the curse and Henry’s poisoning does not make a lot of sense. They should be able to save Lucy without breaking the curse.
I almost feel like this should have been the second episode of the season and then they should have filled in some details over the half of a season. I am not really convinced that this half had a plot.

ParticipantI think that it was a mistake to sort of imply that it was Drizella by saying they worked for Tremaine’s company and all that. I guess that could have just been a throw away line, but what is said should have meaning. If Robyn was supposed to be going to college, but didn’t, then when was she ever working for Tremaine? It might just be cursed memories, but it is also just bad writing, in my opinion.
I am glad that no one is dating Drizella though because she is crazy right now. No one should be dating her, just like no one should have dated Regina in the early seasons of Ouat.
