ParticipantEmma and Regina do magic on screen together all the time. If you learn anything from the swan queen fans, it’s that.

ParticipantI think the thing that offends me the most about this show is that Disney/ABC allowed a show to use their canon, they allowed them to use the Disney names and the Disney clothing and the Disney songs even and lean on them in Ouat. That is unheard of and it might only be this one show that is allowed to do that. To treat the Disney versions as something we know about these characters and as far as i am concerned they completely wasted it.
In Season 1, they used our childhood memories of the Disney movies as sort of a backdrop for which they fleshed out their ideas. That was really interesting. It wasn’t a retelling of the Disney versions exactly, it was building upon those preconceived notions about the Disney versions. Like they didn’t have to explain who the mad hatter was or who Red Riding Hood is or who Jiminy Cricket is or who the dwarfs are, it was just known and then they tangled it all together and made it their own and made it more.
That just stopped at some point. I, actually, think it was Season 3A when they did just Neverland. They stopped tangling the stories all together and they stopped fleshing out from what we know and instead just rewrote the story. There are things i like about 3A. Pan, Rumpel, Bae, Tink, some good Emma and Snow, some good Henry being Pan, some good Regina in there even, but still it felt stilted. We knew they were going to escape. We knew that everyone was going to be fine and there was no tangling of Neverland with the other fairytales. It was all Neverland and that was it. Rumpel being Pan’s father was the only twist there and it was good, but it left a lot of filler going on that season.
This might be it. This might be the one chance that a tv show gets to use the Disney canon in this way and it just is so frustrating because of how badly this show is written. Just think if someone could have written like a multi generational, family oriented show with their new fairytale characters and incorporated that into the Disney canon in a cohesive and consistent and well written way, it would have been epic. If this show was internally consistent characterwise, world building wise, storywise it would have been remembered as one of those cult favorites and would still be talked about like Buffy in twenty years.
That is not going to happen now, in my opinion, and this might have been the one chance where someone is able to use the Disney in this way and it is just disappointing to me in every way. It is such a good idea and it was just so badly executed.

ParticipantI don’t know where to put this, but Jennifer Morrison got the majority of her hair cut off. It doesn’t exactly prove anything, but i would consider it evidence that she might not be coming back.

ParticipantI think that this conversation is different because a lot of times we are having the conversation about the in universe point of view verses the writer point of view and that is interesting. We are talking about the larger themes of the show and how those can impact the audience. I think that things are being said happened on the show that did not happen on the show, in my opinion. The Hook fan rhetoric is not really something i am really interested in seeing in the swanfire thread.
At least not when the people stating the Hook fan rhetoric don’t really want to have a discussion. They just want to state “facts” and be agreed with and that is it.

ParticipantI would love the Blue Fairy long game plot, but they haven’t even had the Blue Fairy do anything this season. I have given up that whatever the backstory is is going to be interesting.

ParticipantI think that the author pen is as good a reason as any. They might just introduce a new magical object. They introduced like four in the last episode.

ParticipantGood point. I don’t get how they could pretend that the Blue Fairy didn’t know that Rumpel was the Black Fairy’s son. I think that should be important, but they have continued to not do anything with the Blue Fairy so who knows.

ParticipantYes, Emma is a fictional character, but that doesn’t mean we, the members of the audience, don’t feel for her. I don’t think it’s true to say that it’s crazy that we should care about a fake person’s happiness. It’s not crazy; it’s actually part of basic human nature. Neuroscience researchers at Emory University have proposed that the same neural mechanisms that enable us to emphasize with real people also make us emphasize with fictional characters. Specialized brain cells called “motor neurons” are the proposed biological substrate of empathy, and these same specialized neurons are what get activated when we watch others we care about, whether real or fictional, go through difficulty. It’s proposed that these motor neurons are what allow us to take a walk in someone else’s shoes. The fact that so many people feel strongly about their favorite characters has a lot to do with their ability to identify with said characters on some level, despite the often fantastical situation. Hence, many people worry about Emma, who is a self-insert character, because they actually cared about her once the way they would a friend. Yes, it’s a bit silly, but it’s basic human psychology and biology.
I totally agree with what you said here. I do think that this is true and in the early seasons i did care about Emma. I just think that the writing of this show is so bad, Emma is so inconsistent from the character that she used to be, that it just has completely shattered the fourth wall for me. I can no longer think about her as a person because she behaves in ways that real people just do not. Character is everything and the writing of these characters is complete crap. Emma is still my favorite character. I still want her to interact with her parents and it not be about Hook and i know it isn’t going to happen again. I want them to show her taking care of Henry. I want her to be the leader and the savior and help the regular people. I want all of those things, but i also know that those things are not going to happen.
In the first season, Emma was written as a abused child that grew up in a bad home, but was still strong and she that was looking for a good home with good parents and learning how to take care of her child. She was also the normal person in the fantastical situation and those things were interesting. That is just all gone now, in my opinion.
I, also, think that while we may care about a character, that their happiness, as i said, cannot take precedence over how a show comments on the life and the toxic social attitudes it is propping up by spewing terrible ideas on its viewers. All that stuff you said. Obviously for some people, they don’t feel that the show has gone too far and they are still able to care about the characters and have that conversation. I just think that a lot of people are not having that conversation. They are having the conversation about how this show is commenting on life in a way that is toxic and how the show should be criticized for it. Which it should be.

ParticipantIt wouldn’t surprise me if Emma goes all Misery on him and breaks his ankles with a wooden mallet just so that he can’t leave her, physically, literally and metaphorically.
This was awesome. Thanks.

ParticipantI almost think it would have been better if they hadn’t given a reason for why they were singing. It goes back to the problem of this show not being funny. Any reason as to why they are singing is going to be funny and this show doesn’t pull that off.
At least all of these silly things are happening in one episode. At least it isn’t happening in the finales. I really just don’t see how this episode is going to be relevant to the plot. It is also really unfortunate that they didn’t have any songs in like the main spaces of Storybrooke. I think that was a real mistake, but it is generally a mistake.
