@Grimmsistr, I ws thinking the same thing – we’ve exhausted the Emma debate, who next?  I like your choice…going to have to do some thinking, I’m not the strongest Rumple-analyzer!  You’ve given me a good challenge!

So I just wanted to talk about these scenes for a bit since their similarities (and disparities) have been bugging me since the finale. Serious rambling ahead.

So, as you can see from these two scenes, the way Emma and Killian are positioned is just way too similar to be a coincidence to me. And in both scenes, Killian is sitting outside at a table.

And let’s be real, Emma’s jacket was chosen to deliberately parallel 3×22 and 2×05. She’s wearing this jacket on both of her trips to the Enchanted Forest, and both times she spent a lot of time with Killian. It’s not a coincidence.

Emma is herself in both scenes, and her goal is the same; she’s trying to get back to her family. (Even the way she gets home is paralleled in that both times she has realisations – that love is strength, that Storybrooke is her home.)

Killian is the most interesting for me – obviously his peasant clothing is covering up his pirate clothes, and he’s adopting a different persona than his usual (because Captain Hook is a persona) in order to get close to Emma & Co. You can see when he takes off the peasant clothes and puts his hook back on in 2×06 that he’s happy to be back in a persona he knows and is comfortable with, even if it’s not a persona he particularly likes.

“You should be used to people not trusting you.”

    “Ah, the pirate thing.”

His self-loathing is pretty evident in that statement alone, and the way he doesn’t even object to Emma’s accusation. Anyway, my point is, Killian isn’t himself in 2×05 when he’s dealing with Emma for the first time. Killian ‘Hook’ Jones is hiding, buried beneath the years of revenge fuelled hatred of his Captain Hook persona.

In 3×22, that has completely changed. His attitude towards himself has changed. He doesn’t associate being a pirate with being a bad person anymore, because being a pirate is what brought him back to Emma. So Killian ‘Hook’ Jones is on display now, no hiding. He is completely himself, and proud of it. And he’s showing that to Emma, and Emma likes it.

    “I’m a hell of a Captain.”

In the scene in 3×05 where they are speaking for the first time on our screens; the staging of it also speaks volumes to me. Emma is standing above Killian; he has to look up at her, and she’s looking down on him. She’s in the position of power, and she’s making it very clear with her body language that she doesn’t trust him. Both of their faces are closed off, and both are wary of the other.

The way he has to look up at her is a visual representation for us that (and also from Killian’s perspective) Killian is not Emma’s equal right now in terms of his behaviour and the way he feels about it. This perspective is only enhanced by the way Emma’s lit up IMO – he’s in the more shadowy, dark part of the scene, and she’s illuminated by the sun in her half of the scene.

As Killian comes to realise how much he cares for Emma, the perspective that Killian has of himself in relation to Emma is only solidified by his own sense of self-worth. He doesn’t think he’s good enough for her – “a one-handed pirate with a drinking problem”. Meaning that in his view, he will have to strive to get her “level” – to be good enough, in his view, for her. Which is what he does, from 2×22 onward, when Emma offers him the chance to do so.

You can see in the second scene that he has achieved Emma’s “level” in his own mind. He has been changed irrevocably by his love for her, so he now feels like maybe he DOES deserve her. He’s no longer looking up at her. They’re looking directly into each other’s eyes – and the body language couldn’t be any more different. Visually, both of them are equally illuminated – neither one of them outshines the other. Their genuine smiles are indicating that now they’re completely open with each other. They’re equals.

I just think it’s incredible how similar and yet dissimilar the introductory scene of their romantically charged dynamic is to the introductory scene of their romantic relationship.

    I just love them ok.

    1) Favorite Episode?
The finale.  I liked that it was it’s own little story, and for the most part, pretty light.  Sometimes the writers are so wrapped up with the Big Bad and crazier storylines they sacrifice some of the lighter moments that really are needed to create a good balance.  I think they did a good job with Emma and showing her finally open up and accept her family & realize that ‘home’ is where your family is.  There’s only so much you can do with each character when the cast is so large and premise so broad, but I think they achieved what they were trying to do when it came to Emma’s character development.  I know a lot of people didn’t like that it was pretty much Snow Falls but that’s actually what I loved about it – I loved rewatching an episode with Emma, I thought that was a lot of fun.
    2) Least Favorite Episode?
Quiet Minds.  Neal’s death was completely unnecessary – a ‘bolder’ move would’ve been to continue his father/son journey with Rumple and see them try to work out their problems as adults.  Of course that’s touchy-feely stuff and we know that’s A&E’s weakness.  How would it compare to Emma & the Charmings?  What would be similar/different?  And if they really wanted to tell the story they crammed into a couple of episodes, they really could’ve/should’ve devoted an entire 1/2 season to it at the very least.
    3) What did you think of Zelena as a character/villain?
I’m on the fence with her.  She snarled a lot – what was that?  And I was totally unimpressed with her motivation – more daddy issues?  Really, guys?  And it just doesn’t make sense that she would go to Rumple instead of Regina — Rumple essentially dismissing her didn’t make sense either – why not try to reunite the sisters, who you already have a lot of control over – think of the potential amount of magic and power you have there.  I don’t think the Dark One would’ve let that opportunity slip out of his grip.

I think all villains are going to pale in comparison to our 2 originals – you can’t beat the Dark One and the Evil Queen; and Robert Carlyle and Lana Parilla continuously blow me away with their ability to show those characters teetering on that edge of good and bad.

    4) Favorite moment?
So many!!  The ball scene was a lot of fun.   I know many didn’t like Rumbelle’s wedding interrupted but I really liked how their words applied to both Rumple & Belle, but also to the other couples on the show, and was an overall comment on what ‘true love’ is.  I loved Neal and Emma commiserating over their failed relationships – that was an excellent moment.  I loved the ‘you gave up your ship for me’ scene.  NYCS – “Why are you wearing that?” – “Why are you wearing THAT?” Henry’s going to be able to out-sass the lot of them soon.

    5) Overall rating for the season?
    A-
I’m still PO’d about the ridiculousness of the Rumple/Belle/Neal/Henry potentional just wasted.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone look so completely different than Colin with vs. Without the scruff….

The Captain’s gotta keep the scruff I’m not scared of that guy!

Yikes, you take a little Sunday nap and come back to naughty bots!  Poor RG/MP/Daniel.

POM – I like that interview.  Had it been done that way, I probably wouldn’t have had a problem with the death!  I just wish they hadn’t crammed it into 3 episodes and still barely gave any time to the story.  Also, it would’ve helped with that pesky CS fan service argument.

@RGF – I have to agree 100% with your post.  I’m not going to speak for people 5-10 or so years older/younger because here in the US, at least, ‘times change’ and it seems like lightning speed.  But for our age group, I do think your description of what is/was expected of us, what we grew up understanding, and what ended up being our reality is spot on.

@RG – I see where you’re coming from, and I’m thankful for the clarification in regard to Hook in the EF.  I was thinking about it after my last post and you put into words what I was thinking, but better.  No, Emma doesn’t need Hook in the EF.  She doesn’t need anyone – except Henry – which is at times a good and a bad character trait.  But I don’t think it was the intention of the writers or actors to suggest Hook was in the EF because Emma couldn’t handle herself, it was simply a way of showing that as someone who loves Emma, Hook wasn’t going to let her be alone goodness knows where/when.  Which I think is an essential human trait – how many of us wouldn’t go to the ends of the earth for the people we love?  That’s just what love is.  Just like when Snow jumped in after Emma in S2, and Charming intended to do but for the portal closing.

RE: Henry – I get what you’re saying.  But I think the only reason there wasn’t more emphasis on Henry was because we know Emma genuinely loves Henry and would never leave Henry, would do anything for Henry, etc.  We don’t need to rehash that.  The purpose of 3×21 & 3/22 was to get Emma to that same place with her parents – hence, her running to them when she returned.  Realistic?  Maybe, maybe not.  It’s a really hard place to put yourself in, time travel and magic and seeing your parents before you were born and whatnot – but yeah, if I had just had an experience that made me realize how much I love and respect and don’t want to lose X, then X is the first person I’d run to, and my child second.  Because X needs to know this.  I think Henry would’ve understood that and would be happy Emma finally realized this love for her parents as well.

but for an hour a week, I do sit in front of the tv and have a fun ride for an hour while I’m watching.

You say this a lot and respect it. But it’s easy to sit back and enjoy the ride when everything is coming up roses in terms of your desires. I don’t mean that disrespectfully and I’m not trying to negate what the show has put into canon. but when you keep hoping for X and Y happens instead (be it character development, shipping, interactions, LGBT representation, screen time) it’s very hard to have a mentality of “just enjoy the ride” But when you are hoping for X and X happens (again, you can make X anything here) then it’s very easy to enjoy the ride.

Thank you.  And I understand and agree I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to the show.  But I don’t consider myself spoiled because X & X (which I’ll infer means my ship in this instance 😉 ) happened.  Because I get why people ship SF.  And that’s not an attempt to placate others on the forum, I genuinely get it.  Because – and again, I know I’m lucky – I like Emma, Hook and Neal individually and think they all have strengths and weaknesses.  (I’m admittedly a little shakier when it comes to SQ.  I would LOVE a LGBT storyline, I just don’t get that particular pairing)

But don’t get me wrong, everything has not come up roses for me (less specifically with Emma than others).  I’m still extremely upset with some major plot points, especially in 3B.  The way they handled the Rumple/Belle/Neal storyline, both before and including Neal’s death, deserved way more attention and time than it got.  Emma/Neal/Henry should have had more time to figure out how they were going to be in each others’ lives – I think there was no question that they were going to be heavily involved in each others’ lives, in some way/shape/form.  And if the show wasn’t so broad and the ensemble so incredibly large, I probably wouldn’t be able to handle the plotholes and screw ups made in OUAT as well as I do.  I certainly don’t begrudge others for being upset by the things they are upset about.  I’m just saying that, for me, there is enough going on that I still enjoy sitting down every Sunday, watching the show, and then looking back to compare and analyze.

Hahaha, my vote is for the white flying squirrel thingy.

So, I haven’t seen Frozen yet (I know, how that’s possible I don’t know) but I don’t necessarily think Anna has to be dead or anything…Rumple’s (at the time the urn would’ve been put in the vault, people can speculate if it is still the case) not the kind of guy who’s going to say “oh, ok, you were a threat but I see your love for your sister negates that, so let’s let bygones be bygones.”  If Rumple perceived Elsa as a threat (for whatever reason) and he figures out a way to ‘bottle her up’, he’s going to do it.  And this would fit in with the ‘misunderstood, not evil’ thought process.  And if he bottled me up, I’d be pretty PO’d once I got out!  So while the other Frozen characters may be in the present, or only flashbacks, I don’t necessarily see her sister’s death as being her only motivation for a possible desire for revenge or what have you.  If she’s even the Big Bad, and not just a misdirect in the first place…
