ParticipantSo do I, RG. I used to say I wanted to be a tutor on the set of the HP movies. 😛 That would have been fun, mostly because of Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman on set. My English teacher from high school used to teach kids on Broadway in New York. She was the best teacher. She’d act out scenes from Shakespeare and make everything come alive. Her theater background really was helpful in the classroom.

ParticipantBoy, RG, you’ve got a lot of headcanon rolling around in that noggin of yours. 😉
I thought it odd, too, that BF was so keen on Nova apprenticing with the her even though she’s clumsy and inept at her tasks.
Really, when all is said and done it always comes back to the Blue Fairy. I do wonder if other fandom sites blame her for everything as much as we do. Does she have staunch fans who aren’t suspicious of every move she makes, like we are. What’s hilarious is that for many people the distrust of the BF comes from Rumple, a villain/anti-hero/anti-villain/whatever you want to call him, who himself is not a good person. 😛

ParticipantI’ve always suspected that the Blue Fairy just doesn’t realize or like the magic of “True Love”. Rumple tells us repeatedly that true love can break any curse. That it is the most powerful magic of all.  That makes it more powerful than fairy magic so maybe Blue doesn’t want to encourage anything more powerful than herself. That’s always been what’s in the back of my mind when thinking about Nova and Grumpy.
We’ve also talked about the possibility of maybe Blue being spurned in love before and nothing good came of her loving someone. Maybe a conflict of fairy magic and something else, but she’s taken steps to stop anyone else from making her mistakes so she never promotes the use of TLK or true love.
For some reason Blue really doesn’t promote the concept of true love.

ParticipantYeah, Lady MacBeth would be an amalgamation of Milah and Cora, imo.
MacBeth’s method of dealing with any obstacle to the prophesies is to eliminate it. Much like Rumple’s comment of dealing with his prophesy of his undoing. They both start out as good men who allow circumstances, fears and ambitions to rule them.
I hope we don’t see Rumple dying, as MacBeth did, but I can see that like MacBeth who misinterpreted the final prophecy making him believe he is immortal, Rumple is also misinterpreting his own prophecy, only in this instance it’s the inverse–his undoing won’t be his death, but maybe a rebirth of some type.

ParticipantI was just watching an episode of Charlie Rose and they were talking about Shakespeare and Liev Schreiber came on and was discussing MacBeth. It’s been years since I read the play, but it was startling that as they were discussing it, that MacBeth’s name could have been replaced with Rumple and made absolute sense. I never really made the connection until right now. Glad to see I’m not the only one thinking this.
Here is a summary of the play from Wikipedia:
Macbeth is Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, and tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia, and he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler as he is forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of arrogance, madness, and death.
Of course, Rumple’s story isn’t exactly the same, but the underlying themes resonate. You’re right that Rumple’s curse ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy in one sense. That little nugget of information given to Rumple sets off a chain reaction that’s still rippling three hundred years later in our story’s timeline.

ParticipantI wonder if places could be portals, too. If they can then I’m thinking the Bermuda triangle is a portal in our world. 😛 Things supposedly disappear there all the time. Maybe else on earth the pyramids, Stonehenge, Sedona, etc.
I know we’ve been theorizing that mermaids can use the water as a portal. August made his mystical, magical water speech and I also read a book last month that had fairies who traveled by portal in the water to their fae home.
Really, they can make anything they want a portal. Now that our world has magic in it, at least in Storybrooke, I’d think it’s sort of like an unlocked door. Before Rumple couldn’t use the various objects he collected and studied because they didn’t send him to a land without magic. Only a limited number of portals can do that, but he did find one and came here and brought magic to Storybrooke. Did bringing magic to town open a floodgate and now other portals can do the job where they couldn’t reach before? Sort of like knowing a phone number. Now that you know it you can start calling. If that made any sense.

ParticipantHmmm….magic disappearing and the “Forever tree” fading. Does this sound familiar? I still say the Enchanted Forest was dying, which goes back to the BF being the ultimate mastermind behind EVERYTHING! 👿
