Aladdin is definitely coming for 5a. ABC is not going to let the opportunity slip past with it having a big rerelease in October. They already flirted with it and set up Jafar in Wonderland.
I fully expect to see Naveen Andrews at the end of the finale. If not him, then his genie bottle will appear. I will be shocked if it doesn’t happen.

JosephineParticipantI hated this episode. It was a disjointed mass of confusion. And I had to leave the room when Rumple/Zelena was on. My dad was a vent for months when he was dying (he had lung condition) and the minute she started tugging I had to escape. I mean, I watched Snow’s mother die that week after my dad’s passing and I was perfectly fine. But that just crossed a line for me, tonight. It was the first Rumple episode I despised.

JosephineParticipantThanks, but it was RG who made the birdhouse, not I. 😛
My Belle is going to Disney so…(turn your eyes away DSB) so I made a little gift for Macy and DSB:

They are marble magnets and push pins. I used a Disney activity book from Dollar Tree and marbles I had at home and add some glue and magnets and there you have it.

JosephineParticipantCorbin, I hated English in school, which is odd since I’m a voracious reader and have been my whole life. I always got good grades in it and enjoyed most of the literature we read, but I hated being told what to read and when to read it. But I will admit as an adult I’m glad I was pushed. But at the time I would have taken double Math or History to get out of English class. What’s even more odd is my favorite type of test to take was essay, the very thing I despised doing in English class. When I entered college the only thing I did know was that I was never going to be an “English major”. 😛
As for J.Mo mentioning that book, that’s kind of eerie. it’s not an obscure book, but it’s not on most people’s current reading list, unless you’re a student like Corbin. Maybe they really are stalking this forum like we’ve discussed in the past.

JosephineParticipantI need to go to bed or I’ve just been reading too much Austen or both. I caught myself plotting out SF as Persuasion. For those not familiar with the story, it’s the tale of Anne Elliot who is persuaded to give up her first love, Frederick Wentworth, by a close family friend, Lady Russell. Skip ahead years later and he’s now Captain Wentworth and Anne is thrown once again into the melee with him. In Once version, Anne would actually be Neal, Lady Russell is August, Emma is Capt. Wentworth since August convinced Neal to leave Emma. Oooh, Hook can be the sneaky Cousin William and we’ll throw Milah in as Mrs. Clay. I am NOT writing this. I’m not mad, just really tired and reading too much of Jane Austen lately.
Good night.

Watching how the show has dealt with Rumple and Neal, it’s not just literal and figurative character assassination, it’s the icky feeling that it was done for “the oooh-aaah factor”, the gratuitous cruelty of it — as in, how many horrendous things can I inflict on those two before they fall apart as characters?
Like watching two kids giggle gleefully as they incinerate ants with a magnifying glass…
A part of me is feeling they’re self-sabotaging their own show. They’re thinking “How can we destroy our characters even more?” And the sad part is they’re including Snowing in this now, too. I’m brought to mind of the Paul Simon song “Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover” in which the song enumerates all the various ways to break up. I get that Adam and Eddy are playing with their toys and seeing how many ways they can push their characters to the point we hate them all. Maybe someone can come up with a parody “Fifty Ways to Break your Fandom”.

April 6, 2015 at 1:24 pm in reply to: A thought about Rumple that needs sharing…well two thoughts. #300908JosephineParticipantI think A&E have really glazed over this. Rumple’s entire life revolved around reuniting with Baelfire and Baelfire ended up dying and he died sacrificing himself for his papa and the town. Rumple has to be truly broken now. Maybe even beyond repair.
Glazed? They bulldozed over it and are now trying to erase Bae’s existence from the show. It’s a giant elephant in the room that everyone but Adam, Eddy, and the writers are willing to acknowledge. Rumple is now evil for evil’s sake. I was so angry that Mal pleaded with Rumple to show her what happened to her child, and Rumple showed no empathy, no spark of acknowledgment of being in the similar situation with his son. It was a slap in the face to Rumple’s character and fans of the show. This is a man who worked for centuries to get back to his child. He literally moved worlds for it. And now it’s just dropped.
I get angry because I watch Grimm, another show about fairy tale creatures that is also in its fourth season. It’s vastly different than Once and not really fair to compare them side-by-side, but the similarities are they both have large casts, characters have odd interconnections, and throw in supernatural abilities. But the key difference is that there is a lot of continuity and character development. The characters don’t change to suit the plot and they discuss problems even if they don’t agree. Once has become known for changing the characters to suit the plot. The biggest glaring example is Rumple. They need him to be evil so they they ignore his passion for his son and the fact that he never wanted to rule the world. He just wanted his family.

JosephineParticipant“Oh yes, and here’s the cute girl who likes books, she’s sort of dumb as a board despite this, but she’s nice, and most importantly, boys and girls, she’s eye candy.” #headdesk
Oh yes. She is every nerdy boy’s fantasy of a librarian who dresses in the most impossibly un-librarian clothes ever but can talk to about all your nerd fantasies. At some point, they’ll have a close up of Bell chewing on the end of a pencil while leaning over and reading a book, the top buttons of her blouse undone. It’s so 1980s cliche.
It’s also very sad. She sacrificed her future, her life, for the greater good of her people. Even in the Dark Castle, she spoke of higher goals in life. Her dream wasn’t to find a handsome man and live in a castle, although that was the future plotted out for her with Gaston. She wanted to explore the world. Her books by extension were a form of escapism. Rumple’s quote of “I’m not looking for love” was foreshadowing for certain, but it was also a honest statement applicable for both sides. She didn’t go into the deal thinking “Oh, if only I can make him fall in love with me.” In the present day, they don’t know how to get back to that Belle. They write her as vulnerable (kidnapped, shot, amnesia, alternate personality, etc…) and then alternately as a human version of “Google”. Her intelligence is used a plot device, not an authentic part of her character. And now they botched it so much that I, a once fervent Rumbeller, am now more ambivalent. I don’t have enough energy in me to hate the pairing. I’m just at a point I don’t care. And apathy is more damaging than love or hate.
I think many of us glommed onto SwanFire because it was story about second chances, redemption, and reconciliation. This wasn’t a couple who broke up because they couldn’t get along or one of them cheated on the other. They parted due to extreme, other-worldly circumstances. It delves into the ethical questions of personal happiness vs. the greater good (hmm, funny, Belle’s choice did too originally). Making the best choices with the resources available to you at the time. And it was poetic in the extreme…the reason for the curse and the curse’s savior coming together. It was a beautiful story. And scraped for a variety of reasons we’ve been theorizing for the past year.
*sniff* They’ve really ruined the “Stiltskin” men on this show. Now I’m just waiting for how they’ll ruin the last one. Will Henry be able to escape the demonization and destruction that his father and grandfather have gone through?

JosephineParticipantWe want to see a change. We want to be able root for a hero. We want to be able to see why a character is great instead of being told why.
O…M…G. This is Once in a nutshell. We’ve been criticizing Once because this is essentially the root of our complaints. It’s not about being bitter shippers, it’s that when we’re TOLD to do something, it comes off as blind obedience. I can think for myself. Don’t tell me, show me.
For example in Season One, they set Rumple up as this villain, a trickster who manipulated everything for selfish reasons. But then they showed the evolution of his story. Bits and pieces woven throughout the season. Through losing his son, through losing Belle. It was a beautiful story. They didn’t tell us to love Rumple, but for many of us it was an organic result of storytelling.
Another example is Snowing. We all knew that Snow White and Prince Charming were True Love from the first moment of the show. But they showed us why. We weren’t just told “Here is this couple. You must love them just because”. They showed us their love story: their meet cute in Snow Falls, David fighting for Snow after her forgetting him, their struggles throughout their courtship and marriage. (Remember, I’m referring to the first season.)
But then after the first two seasons they began to TELL us things. Action, magic, special effects and “shock” became the standard. They’re more interested in telling us connections and relationships instead of showing us anything. (Belle and Will, I’m looking at you. What the what????) No time for character development? Just put in a few lines of exposition. Why talk about your problems when you can wave a sword at them or have a magic cure!
And the most frustrating thing about the criticism to the show is that it’s always met with condescension. Dismissed as just the complaints of bitter shippers. We are not stupid or relate everything to romance. We have valid complaints and it’s so frustrating that this show, that was once wonderful and brought us all together has degraded to the point of hate-watching it. I don’t want to hate-watch it. I want to love it, but that is not to be, anymore, and it makes me sad.

JosephineParticipantAgain??? They tried to bring it back in the late 90s and it didn’t work. Although I am a major fan of the original and remember watching it as a young child.
