I don’t think they made any new publicity photos for Scandal, either. I noticed in the promo they were using last year’s promo photos of them posing in the rain instead of new ones. I wonder if they cut back for all of their existing shows.

JosephineParticipantYep, seems like it, RG. I think they can tell they might not even get a truncated season five.
So I was reading back on the popularity of Elsa and I can tell you why it’s so popular with the preschool set. The boys aren’t that enamored of the movie (they loved Brave) but the girls worship it. Why? Well, preschool girls, the ones I have, are all interested in pretty dresses, princesses, sparkles. Period. Every single girl I have oohs and ahhs over anything sparkly. Throw in a tiara and they’re really in love. How do you think all those horrible Barbie movies are made and sold. So they love this movie because it has a Princess/Queen in a sparkly dress singing and dancing and has magic. Also, “Let it Go” is easy to sing over, and over, and over again. Let me tell you, they do not care for Anna as much as Elsa. Anna doesn’t have sparkles or magic. So the preschoolers love the show and the adults like the story and it just explodes.
I wish it would implode because I’m over the movie.

JosephineParticipantThat was an interesting and informative video. I still question if Frozen is really all that unique in its critique of fairytale tropes. It certainly was not the first Disney film to turn a princess into a heroine, since Mulan and Brave did that whole feminist thing back in the day. Mirada didn’t need a prince to have an adventure. Mulan’s goal wasn’t romance, since she had more important things to do like save China; Shang was just an extra bonus. Nor was Frozen the first film to promote family love over romantic love, since as discussed earlier, Brave did that first back in 2012 with the mother-daughter relationship being true love. Frozen wasn’t even the first Disney film to poke fun of the love-at-first-sight trope, since Enchanted did that back in 2007. Let me say, I adored Enchanted, which put Giselle as the damsel-in-distress-turned-heroine and had great musical scores like “That’s How You Know.” It was highly original and entertaining. Giselle was crossing from fairytale world to modern day NYC and slaying dragons way before Emma Swan ever entered popular culture in 2011. Enchanted was the first real Disney parody of its own making, which had Giselle realize she wasn’t in love with Prince Charming after all, but instead found love with a modern day man from Manhattan.
So, as much as I enjoyed Frozen for what it was, a cute story about sisterly love, I really don’t think it was all that groundbreaking or unique in turning the fairytale tropes on their heads since as I wrote above, Mulan, Enchanted and Brave were the first to do that. I did like how Frozen had a good, yet misunderstood queen with magic powers, made the sisterhood relationship of primary importance, and made the Prince Charming archetype character (Hans) into a villain. I enjoyed watching it for the most part. However, I felt there were several plot holes (e.g. Who was ruling the kingdom of Arendelle until Elsa came of age? There had to be a regent somewhere, yet he or she remained unmentioned), there underdeveloped characters (who exactly was Kristoff and why was he adopted by magic trolls?) and that the story dragged along in several places (the second half until the ending). I wouldn’t want to watch it again and again just for the music, since I could just listen to Let it Go on youtube. I know no movie is perfect, but I guess I couldn’t help but feel stumped why it was being trumpeted by some as the best Disney film in 20 years, since as I said, I liked other more recent films better like Tangled. Well, I guess now I’m better informed, but still not convinced of why Frozen is supposedly the best thing since sliced bread. To each her own I guess.
Slurpeez….everything you wrote I agree with.
Enchanted:
The reason I got in to Once. I loved the “fish out of water” of Giselle in NYC. It was fantastic and great movie. Lana says she patterned Regina on Ursula but I get more vibes as her channeling Susan Sarandon’s Evil Queen.Tangled:
I felt it was a much stronger picture overall than Frozen. While I did like Frozen, the songs and the story were more interesting to me.Brave:
Merida’s love for her mother reverses the curse she inadvertently cast upon her family to begin with. She fought against tradition because she wasn’t ready to marry.I think the flaws of Frozen are that it went through so many hands. Some parts are brilliant but then others seem disconnect to me. It just doesn’t have a cohesiveness to me that other Disney movies have had. And the fact that I teach preschool and have heard about Elsa and Anna daily for too many months to count. The thing is, the kids really can’t tell me the story line of the show, they just like Elsa dancing around in the snow and singing and Olaf.

JosephineParticipantIt’s the hair and the stare. I like MRJ’s curls better than the slicked back look.
Robert Downey, Jr. is one of those actors I disliked in the 80s and 90s. Much like James Spader (which he stared with in “Less Than Zero”). But as they’ve both aged, I can appreciate both of them now in their current works.

JosephineParticipantGreat job, RG!
Okay, so I picked up my blanket to combat the shame I’m feeling from it laying there, and started working on it. I’m hoping to finish tonight. I’ve realized why I’m dragging my feet. The knitting itself is basic and very easy but I don’t care for the border at all, but I’ve ripped it out three times and I refuse to do it once more. So I’m going to push through and just suck it up and get it done.
I forgot to comment to Nonnie, I like your wall board for piecing. My mom would have loved having one of those.

JosephineParticipantI think some of us are frustrated, also, because a faction of us are also Grimm fans.
Grimm, I hate to admit, started out much weaker then Once. It was okay, but was a very slow burn. Once was so much better, but them something happened. Grimm start to gather steam and stroke the fire. By season three, a lot of us realized that while Grimm was fantastic on continuity and character growth in addition to moving the plot and action forward, Once stagnated. We have actual characters that sit and talk about their problems in addition to the magic and supernatural stuff. Things we’re complaining about on Once, they’re actually addressing on Grimm. It’s almost like they’re learning from all the mistakes that the show it’s most compared to is making. In turn, it’s making for a much better story.
It also helps that there are really no major shipping wars in that fandom that have taken over and the cast seem to really get along. My biggest gripe is that Wu has to learn the truth, not if such-and-such is sleeping with whatshisname.
I’ve rambled on about Grimm 😉 Back to Once talk:
I’ve said this before but if MRJ’s contract is with Disney and that’s why he’s doing all Disney related projects lately and has other in the pipeline and then in the meanwhile Once would get cancelled, it would be quite funny. They killed off a character for whatever reason, but because of odd contracts he’d hypothetically be the only one left contractually working. 😛

Shame and peer pressure are my best motivators. 😉

JosephineParticipantLooking at RG’s progress I’ve concluded:
1) RG is very motivated and it looks great.
2) Crochet is extremely fast compared to knitting.
3) Jo suffers from a bad case of ADD with knitting and can’t be motivated to pick up her needles.

JosephineParticipant@Ranisha, that was my reaction, too.
Okay, I saw this on tumblr and then investigated the Spoiler TV link. I’m thoroughly confused.
ABC’s Once Upon A Time is consistently one of SpoilerTV’s most popular series. IMDb users also rate it, with 117,907 ratings equating to an 8.1 average. Once Upon A Time has been on the air for three seasons, and its last season saw a strong increase in its episode ratings, with the season finale garnering the highest episode rating yet, a 9.5 averaged from 855 votes. All of its premieres and finales sit higher than their respective season trendlines too. Its graph is below:
Uhmmm….didn’t the ratings consistently fall, not ris on the whole from season one to three?

JosephineParticipantWasn’t Leroy a janitor of something in the pilot?
Granny – Diner owner
Ruby – Waitress
Belle – Librarian
Blue – Mother Superior (hey, it’s a vocation)
Dr. Whale – Doctor, obviously.
Archie – Psychiatrist/Psychologist (one of them)
