Watcher, “druthers” means someone’s personal preference. As in “If I had my druthers, I’d want it to stay warm all through winter.” 😀

JosephineParticipantIt’s the show Extant on CBS with Halle Berry. Only two more weeks left of the show. She has an alien baby who was taken from her and it draws strength by feeding on people. It’s a very…..strange…..interesting show.

JosephineParticipantThank goodness next week is only an hour. I’m on Extant overload at the moment. Alien babies who eat people is too jarring for two hours worth of television.

JosephineParticipantRG is always trying to burn me up. I’m beginning to suspect something is up. 😈
I may have the cold little human problem solved. I had to dig out paper and pen and resort to doing algebraic equations to work up a pattern, but I think I have the border down now. Amazing how one or two extra stitches can throw you completely off balance.

JosephineParticipant@Ranisha-Pitts , hot captain is wet…and still hot. *sigh*
Did you see how cute Little Captain was? And no that isn’t a euphemism for anything, so don’t edit it 😛 As if I’d say anything inappropriate.

JosephineParticipantTrying to add to the rational and intelligent discussion going on, I wanted to address the impact of social media on network decisions. Ten years ago when I was in college, we didn’t have the prevalence of social media. Facebook was just in it’s formative stage and businesses, media, etc., relied on focus groups. So many bad business decisions were made and still continue to be made because a focus group decided one way or another. Often, common sense and logic are thrown out the window. It’s the go-to method for testing the waters for new endeavors. Heck, the Nielsen ratings system is one big focus group in a way. I’m getting to a point, I swear. Stay with me. The problem comes when focus groups, as with now social media, are used to determine artistic direction. When a small group of people decide in what direction a tv show should go or what music a radio station should play, it stifles creativity. Eventually, stagnation occurs. If you’re crafting an epic tale to go one direction and then having it’s outcome changed by focus groups and/or social media, then problems occur. As we’re witnessing now.
I applaud artists like J.K. Rowlings. You might not be a fan or have read her books, but she bucked against the industry and stayed true to her vision. If she’d caved into fans demands, Hermione would be married to Snape or Draco, Sirius and Lupin would be raising werewolf cubs together, Ginny would be dead, and Dumbledore and Voldemort would be shacked up together in Hogsmeade after they solved their decades long lover’s spat. But she stayed true to what she wanted to write. Not what would make her more money, or please the most people.
The industry executives wonder why people are flocking to cable, internet and streaming services for their favorite shows. It’s not that they allow nudity and cursing, which they do, but it’s because for the most part, they’re more interested in telling a good story rather than worrying week to week of ratings. Tonight’s Emmy awards are topped by cable shows that don’t have the high ratings networks are looking for. But they have faithful cult followings and are critically acclaimed. Why? Because they tell a good story. Looking back at season one of Once, it was magical and new and interesting. To the surprise of nobody here, “Skin Deep” and “Snow Falls” consisted of the finest hours of television for any genre. But it seemed to slowly loose it’s magic as time when on and now it’s just another show on television and not “must see tv” for many. And I don’t think it will ever recapture what it once meant or felt like. The showrunners no longer have a trajectory, a vision, and now knowing that we don’t care to theorize or research or anticipate plots like we used to.
(Wow, I never write long posts…forgive me)
