ParticipantI am reminded of that song in Pete’s dragon about all the valuable bits of dragons…

ParticipantThey have quite a few separate background characters that were played by the same actors, though not as many as some shows have gotten away with in the past. Odd to use the same child actor but maybe she has the right look.

ParticipantIt’s definitely a big issue. When they choose white actors to play relatives of white actors’ characters (or younger dopplers), that…makes sense. And given the talents of ALL the actors it’s difficult to complain about most of the casting choices they’ve made.
But when they constantly squander opportunities to include PoCs in a relevant way, it is a really, really big issue. If they’d made Mulan instead of Will a regular, the fandom would have cheered. They could have given Cruella whatever she wants before Ursula. A thousand little choices that they’ve made that could add up to a more diverse and interesting cast.

ParticipantNot my favorite episode (even recently).
Liked:
–Oz. The costuming, the door knocking out the guard, being back in the Wizard’s palace. Awesomeness. And I really like (and love to hate) our Wicked Witch. She was downright cruel in this episode. It was beautifully played.
–Timeline clues: Though they were scant for the FTL flashbacks, there were some, and they put up 9 weeks ago at the start of the NYC flashbacks. Me likey.
–Henry helping to search for the author. It was just a moment, but he was included at least.
–Rumple’s dealmaking–and having it turned against him the way it was this episode. But I loved how he persuaded the author to come with him with the pen. Temptation of power–something he understands.
–A bit of clarity on questions like, why didn’t Rumple take over Neal’s apartment at once? and When did Marian become Zelena (which wasn’t relevant till now but I’d been seriously wondering based on spoilers).
Disliked:
–No Belle. At all. Not even a shout out.
–Somehow in trying to make Robin less of a git for cheating on his wife and then leaving Regina for her anyway…they managed to make OQ even squickier for me. Something about the way Zelena pointed out how she’s been acting as her sister’s lover’s wife…ew. No thank you.
–Will is the least relevant “regular” since they forgot about Red in the second half of S2. He finally gets an ep with a flashback and literally the only thing we learn about him in it is that he once was in Oz and his sister drowned–the latter of which anyone who watched Wonderland already knew. And considering what they’ve done with Belle, it’s really spectacular to see them IGNORE and waste a regular so much.

ParticipantWell…I’m glad they haven’t forgotten poor Chip completely.
But dang, I was hoping for more Dark Castle. Love that place.

ParticipantStorybrooke is about a half hour outside of Boston. Emma brought Henry back the same night he went to Boston. NYC would be a little further away.

ParticipantWell, I guess it explains why Rumple wasn’t crashing there…
Anyway, I cheer the epicness of Robin Hood riding his horse through traffic in NYC. That’s the sort of stuff I like best in Once.
I’m still uncertain that they can redeem his character for me after what they had him do…but we’ll see.

ParticipantVague theory: The reason that Henry wouldn’t be taken back by the curse is that he was born in the Land without Magic. Lily, also, was born in the Land without Magic, if only just barely. So the curse might have affected Ursula and Cruella while not affecting the baby?
I am probably reaching here, but there might be something to it.

ParticipantThey never caption these things so I may have misheard.
Anyway, it definitely feels pre-Lacey.

ParticipantTrue, but both Once and Wicked were going off the (fabulous) Oz books’ illustrations, which decked out various persons in Oz in similar costuming. (The 1939 movie obviously was going from the same source material and has also influenced later interpretations. And for bonus Oz fun, Baum himself created at least four films during his lifetime–late 19teens–of his Oz series.) I saw the uniform and immediately said, that’s Oz! It’s more than just Wicked.
The original books by Baum were all lavishly illustrated (John R. Niell did most of the series, though the first book was originally illustrated by W.W. Denslow and they had very different concepts of what Dorothy herself looked like), and in places the illustrations and text referenced one another in a way that you don’t see often in modern texts.
Even women soldiers in Oz wear similar fashions:
