His statement did have Final Battle overtones…but the fact that Rumple just two months ago figured he’d leave Storybrooke to Ingrid’s horrific plot and now is starting his own war against heroes…I dunno.

He’s the one who made that prediction, so he must have SOME idea of what it meant. Now he’s going to be the one who starts it?

Belle is a strong, impulsive, intelligent, and insightful woman, but she’s also idealistic, romantic, and plagued by insecurities. None of that feels inconsistent to me–it actually fits together VERY well from where I sit.

Her insecurities do make her easier to manipulate, and sometimes her romanticism and insecurities get in the way of her intelligence (as does that heroic, impulsive strength at times). Rumple knows her better than anyone else, so he knew what to say to persuade her to turn over the dagger. I don’t exactly like that he used Hook (their history does make it sketchy for Belle to turn it over, but I’m putting faith in the friendship they built in the six weeks we don’t get to see) for that purpose–but he would have found another way if it hadn’t worked. This is Rumple, after all.

I don’t think this manipulation is worse than his previous betrayals. If you weren’t done with Rumbelle over his behavior in 4A, I struggle to see how this is the final straw. It’s consistent with how he behaved in 4A–pretty much consistent with the Rumple we’ve seen since Neal’s death, actually. (I still find his acceptance of Neal’s death OOC, but that’s another issue.)

It’s low but understandable that he’d do what he had to in order to get the dagger back. He doesn’t feel he can let Belle or the heroes know he’s back in town yet, but he probably needs the dagger both for his own security and for some of what he’s got planned. He’s always been very ends-justify-means, even before he was the Dark One; this is no different for him. Which is not to say he isn’t being awful to Belle–he is–but the harm to her is, in his mind, a minor price for his goal. He may even believe that by the time he’s done, just as with his arc in 4A, she’ll be none the wiser and therefore not really harmed at all (by his logic, not hers or ours).

I loved the episode, I guess because I’ve strapped myself in for the ride at this point and I’ll wildly explain away (or assume an explanation is forthcoming until the end of the universe) almost anything that doesn’t make sense.

And in some ways this episode made me feel like we’re getting back to S1’s magic, though it’s hard for me to quantify how.

    Liked:

–Trains in Storybrooke. Yeah, it’s a total WTH moment, but, TRAINS! (I like trains.)
–Regina’s declarations of wanting to be evil at one point made ME give a mad cackle. It was just that delicious.
–Belle & Henry & THE BOOK. I have only been waiting for 3.5 seasons to see scenes of this–and 411 was the first time. I LOVE IT. More please.
–Belle’s testing the dagger. The way Rumple/Hook turned his head to face her gave me chills. And at least she wasn’t being a total idiot about it–just naive and trusting (probably too trusting in Hook’s ability to change, but her superpower is supposed to be seeing under the surface; I’ll go with it if she has come to really trust him in the last six weeks as we’ve been shown).
–Belle admitting that she’s afraid and doesn’t know what she’ll do if Rumple comes back. Some people on Tumblr were like, wait, what? She’s scared of Rumple now? But I heard the vulnerable woman who had to banish her true love and doesn’t know if she can be strong enough not to go back to him if he comes back, even if he hasn’t stopped murdering the peasants. And that rings true with the Belle they’ve fleshed out in Family Business etc.
–Mal & Regina’s blossoming friendship. It worked for me.
–Emma noting that her superpower is going crazy. That needs to be addressed more.
–The Cabin! Long time, no see. I missed you, you silly convenient cabin in the woods.
–Belle & Rumple/Hook’s pirate vow. Honestly, it gave me chills. I was still trembling at the end of the episode and not from rage, just from feels. That whole scene was perfect in my view–I hate that Rumple’s still tricking her but it makes sense from him as he’s been constructed in S4 so far. And all the points to Colin for believably stepping into RC’s shoes for this episode. I swear Rumple as Killian is hotter than Killian as Killian and I’m not sure how that’s possible.

    Disliked:
–What is the timeline? No, I won’t give up, but eesh. I mean, Rumple kind of addressed that it takes a long time but this does WHAT to Aurora/Phillip’s story? And where does this fit relative to Zelena exactly? (I shall have to think about that some I fear.)
–Love Aurora’s dress, but that’s not the only thing that seems out of synch with what they’ve said before about the sleeping curse (has to be taken willingly) and Aurora’s sacrifice. A contradiction too far, Sirs. Fix it please. I am totes okay if that requires more backstory from them.
–Regina accepting the possibility of harming child Pinocchio after last week’s apology. Kind of a step back for her, though I don’t find it totally OOC. Her text to Emma was so IC that I could hear it in her voice.
–Mixed feelings about August coming back. I mean, on the one hand, YAY and Can We Please Close Some Holes Up Now. But on the other hand, baby Pinocchio was so cute and happy with his papa.

I think the Jolly Roger is coming back! Those looked like modern duds on Killian & Ursula there!

True. I like the camp, but I also like it to be consistent. I still want to be drawn into the world in the process. So, even if it’s campy, bring it back, use the spell again, parallel it, show the effects of whatever hokey thing happened last week.

Eddie tends to make me want to throw things more than Adam, even though he says far, far less. So I agree with you there.

Adam’s promise that it will at least be addressed is much less rage inducing than Eddie’s “Nope.” And this is just a microcosm of their statements.

    I like SFG’s take.

It would make sense for the Sorcerer to have the hat (and to have created the hat) if he was the First Dark One, but then why is he so keen to keep others from having that power? And how did he pass it on?

That does sound like an interesting theory, but if that’s so, why does Blue know about them? And why does she say nobody’s seen them for ages?

No, I’m saying maybe it’s not part one as in the first episode of a two parter, but part one of Operation Mongoose’s enaction.

Just saying it’s a possibility. I’ve already put 422 as Operation Mongoose Part 2 in my spreadsheet.
