ParticipantWell, EvilQueen, I think we will just have to agree to disagree. To me their differences from their original selves stand out much more than their similarities. It wasn’t until Emma showed up and started helping them that they started reverted to their real selves.
Here are a couple interviews that do use the word “opposite” just in case you are interested. One is with Josh Dallas and the other is with the actual creators of the show. Kitsis and Horowitz have stated this themselves.

ParticipantRegina seemed pretty thorough in her planning of the identities…Mr. Gold even made requests about being rich. I personally doubt Regina wouldn’t give one to Belle especially if she planned on using her later. What kind or how detailed it is I don’t know but even David in a coma had memories of his storybrooke life. Maybe since Belle was all about experiencing life Storybrooke Belle is all about living in her own mind….

ParticipantMaybe not all of the residences…Mr. Gold was still pretty close to the same, Blue Fairy was too, Grumpy was already the opposite from Dreamy so why change that…But a majority of the main characters were very very different from their original selves.
Prince Charming is brave and loyal….David was a cheating wuss. Snow was a strong fierce woman…Mary Margaret was a weak doormat. Jiminy was a conscience and followed his heart…Archie was not being true to himself but being run over by Regina. The Huntsman was sensitive and Graham felt nothing. Red was pretty obedient and tried to be helpful to her granny….Ruby went out of her way to be difficult.
So there is actually a lot of evidence that points that many of them were the opposite of their true self. It was part of the curse to destroy their happiness.

ParticipantAnd everyone’s storybrooke counterpart was the opposite of their true Enchanted Forest self. So where Belle can believe in the goodness of people and see Rumple’s is a good man despite all that he has done, her storybrooke counterpart might not be able to make that leap.

ParticipantI think it’s going to take a lot more than Rumple getting Belle to fall in love with him again because the potion Snow took just erased PC from her memory and the barrier spell erased Belle’s entire identity.
Plus, let’s think about how Rumple would try and get Belle to fall in love with him again….”Once upon a time, I held you captive and for some weird Stockholmish reason you fell for me and I fell for you. But I wouldn’t give up my power to be with you. I murdered my first wife, let my son go to a whole new world alone because I wouldn’t give up my power, and I have destroyed and manipulated people for centuries trying to get back to him. Oh, yeah, you’ve been held prisoner for a few decades, almost killed a few times, and finally shot because of your association with me. And no one would vouch for me as a good man because the only one that saw any good in me was you.”
Their whole relationship is a “guess you had to be there” story…lol! I just think Rumple is going to have to make a huge sacrifice to get Belle back. Sucking up to Blue Fairy and giving up his wand and some of his power with it would be the biggest sacrifice he could make besides his life which I don’t see happening because if he dies the show dies.

ParticipantI am pretty sure if I typed my initial reaction I would get banned from the site for cussing like a sailor. Needless to say, I am not happy Belle lost her memory. I hope she can get it back. I love her and Rumple.

ParticipantI am hoping Eva’s surprising connection is with someone else….don’t know who yet…still thinking about it.
But it also creeps me out that Regina would be the step mom to her cousin….and that Leopold married his niece.

ParticipantI thought the pairing was a nice touch myself. 🙂
Ok, so having lost a sister…not estranged…I can tell you that if you grew up with someone it is pretty impossible to just cut them out completely. I mean you would have to change every story ever from your past to cut them out or just not talk about yourself at all. I have tried to do that when talking to people I don’t know because they always ask about her and then I have to explain that she died at 16….don’t talk on the cell phone and drive by the way…and then they feel bad and it gets really awkward. It’s really hard to do.
Since Cora is the miller’s daughter she comes from a humble background and probably had to share a room with her sister if she has one. That is a lot of time together. My sister and I shared a room for half of her life….I pretty much couldn’t talk about the first 19 years of my life if I had to cut her out.
I don’t know…my personal experiences are obviously clouding my judgement but it would be really hard to be married and never talk about yourself especially if they really were as in love as we are lead to believe. There would always be a wall between them which would have kept them from having an end all be all love story….

ParticipantI have a couple questions…
If Eva and Cora were sisters and estranged wouldn’t Eva still have invited her to her own wedding either to rub it in or to extend an olive branch if she is anything like Snow? And wouldn’t she have told her husband about her sister either to complain or to let him know that they need protecting from her crazy power hungry whackadoo of a sister? I can’t see anyone that raised Snow not at least trying to reconcile because they believe in the good in people or trying to keep them apart in an effort to protect her family…both she would have been honest about…I mean young Snow is annoyingly sweet…she learned that from someone.
And hasn’t Rose Red and Snow White already been alluded to by the friendship between Snow and Red? I mean they are best friends and act like sisters. I don’t think their pairing was random. I think it was meant to be a nod to that story.

ParticipantThis seems pretty far fetched even for Lost writers. 🙂 I think that there must be some truth to what Cora said…some…not all. I don’t see them combining characters that way. I don’t see anything to suggest that Phillip is in Hook. There would probably be a battle between the two souls inside his body and we would see a change in personality if the souls were battling it out. Hook has been a very consistent character in this show.
These writers are known for their nods to things they like…Stephen King, Lost, etc but building off another show would be too close to plagiarism and not something I would see them doing at all. I like Hook being Hook and leaving his other character portrayals where they belong…in other shows. 🙂
