This “Home” theme does give me some hope.   In the bar in Manhattan, Neal says to Emma he was trying to help her, and she interrupts to say “by sending me to jail” and he counters her with “by trying to get you home.”   There is also the line about being “almost home” of course, and her experience holding the coconut and saying “Home” the way she did.     I think it is interesting of all the places in NL to visit, they spent time in Neal’s cave, his home there, and on the wall we saw drawings of his “home” with the Darlings.  We also have the bug, which was presumably their “home” on the road, and of course, Emma making her home in NYC where Neal had made his.  There’s just so many scenes that involve that theme with these two in  a direct way that it is part of their motivation as characters.   While this story is very subtle, it clearly has run throughout the past seasons even to Price of Gold.   Remember Emma’s lines about some people only have the back of a car?  That bug was her home.  Her home with Neal.   Neal says “this isn’t over” and it would be very cruel ironic foreshadowing if we find it is before they ever get back “home” to each other.

I feel like so many of us would be relieved if it were Ruby, not because I want her to go but because the actress clearly is on another show in a bigger role, so I am hoping there’s a loophole that it is her.   Dogs were spotted on the day of the big battle showdown, and one picture showed Snow looking particularly distraught, but curiously, not really anyone else.  Snow considered Ruby a sister.  No one other than Granny would be as shocked, and they could have the dog “die” so they’ll say she was in wolf form, then they don’t even need the actress.   They just do a closed casket, and that’s it, emotional stakes reached, we all hate Wicked with a passion.

Sort of appropriate too since Graham died to raise the stakes with Regina, and Ruby the other major character associated with wolves (and according to the graphic novel, his true love (?!) would die to raise the stakes with Wicked.

Yet I know it is wishful thinking and whoever the death is, I will always feel they should have done this instead if the death is really just a contrivance to raise the stakes.  No matter what it is or how it happens, they probably could have figured out a different plot if they wanted to keep the character around, so it says they didn’t and we kind of have to wonder, why not?  Maybe it is behind the scenes stuff but we’ll never know.
It’s easier to “lose” a character we already lost you know, so even though I loved Red/Ruby as a character too, that is why I would continue to hope there’s a loop-hole.  Even though I’m prepared that Matt gave it to us straight and am prepared for it to be any one of them.

I agree that they have a rapport /respect for Matt, but if they mislead him intentionally, then it could happen.  If they said it is HUGE, a major, major character, part of their original core story.  Then he said really, main cast? Then they said “None of the main cast are safe except Bobby.  This is going to be a very big death.  A series regular character is dying and will not return.”   I could see him writing it up that way, and then A&E are snickering because they were being deceptive and cryptic and meant a past series regular, not a current one.

Maybe it is to see Rose, though they didn’t go to see JoAnna, but perhaps it has to do with WL too? Don’t they film concurrently, and maybe Barbara Hershey is filming too?  Also they are writing 3×19 so perhaps they want to touch base with the actors /directors about it, so just a good time to arrange a trip up there to check on things.

That is what I want to believe that they literally said “A major character is going to die and no series regular other than RC is safe,”  and Matt just extrapolated the rest but as we do not have more of their actual conversation?  Hard to know.  I do love Red but her new show has her as a lead and even if it does not work out, she might want another lead role and do not feel the show “needs” her now.  I would be so happy if that were the case but I guess we wait and see if they are pulling a fast one or a long con or what.

Unless her game is to bring magic so only SHE has it.  We don’t know what they will think up with magic as the rules are quite malleable and apparently, riddled with exceptions.  Death is death, unless of course you’re in the free return period and the thing that killed you used magic and dies itself.  Riiiiight.  Ok then.  Blue Fairy, messing up continuity/plot/suspension of disbelief since Season 1.

I think it is likely we will get backstory on the Dagger and origin of the Dark One itself if it does tie into Oz.  Zoso as a name after all someone pointed up did fit into a character in the books.  Maybe WWW has magic because she has the dagger, and the DO is able to do things and no one else can?

That would certainly make for a challenging raising of the stakes here, and put our characters in extreme danger.

The thing with the podcasts isn’t that it was full of spoilers.  It was full of explanation.  We have a fandom that interprets things in wildly varying ways.   It was nice to hear the authors being more candid about what they meant, where they could be without spoiling.  It was better than Adam on twitter, and more composed.    So as a fan, I miss it, but I can see why they cancelled it as a “fan” of entertainment as an industry.

ONCE is just one  show being  produced in an industry in flux.  Television and scripted entertainment is still reeling from all the reality/competition shows drawing away viewers, and on top of that, the way entertainment gets delivered and measured has been changing.  Online viewing, cable and such are taking up more and more eyeballs, and advertisers pay for eyeballs.  We don’t pay to watch OUAT.  Advertisers pay the network and the network pays the studio, and the studio funds the money to make the show.  They used to do things on a very seasonal basis but recently Fox announced it isn’t doing “pilot season”.  Netflix put out House of Cards, an original show of its own putting the whole season up and has seen BOOMING profits.  They’re doing a kids show next.  People use tablets more and more, along with downloading things digitally so lots of time-shifted viewing.  It is all adding up to a change of “must-see-TV” in the old days of a family sitting down to one of the 3 big networks and recording in their Nielsen books what they saw.   Twitter has become one part of the strategy for networks.  Get people tweeting to measure live viewing, as advertisers only  are mainly interested in live + 7 I think it is.   They’re trying to create “water cooler” moments on twitter, which is why they’re encouraging the cast to tweet live and react there.

So I think in part the podcast is kind of “outdated” in the sense it’s not serving the need of driving live views.   It helped intent fans like us to understand the show and keep it on our minds, but it isn’t as effective a tool to make sure we’re watching live +7 so Adam’s swapped his strategy a bit.  As a producer, he wants his show to do well of course, so blocking out some time here and there on twitter is possibly more effective than an entire hour or two with he and Eddy and a host to record a “podcast”.  He can fit in twittering with fans whenever, then try to be on his twitter after or during a broadcast to encourage live views.

Television isn’t “fanfiction”–not so indulgent a thing, nor even is it a published novel where maybe someone might make more effort on plot, character development and structure and some kind of meaningful thing to say.  It’s entertainment for the masses in a certain demographic desired by advertisers.   A lot of what we see with OUAT necessarily reflects all that and we’ll never know what things A&E would do if they only could but can’t.   I suppose we’ll hear on the DVDs on audio commentary some more BTS type things, but I really did like those podcasts.

It does strike me as funny though given that Adam and Eddy love Star Wars, and one thing Lucas was a genius at doing was the marketing and cross-promotion of his product–all those toys!  Disney also of course is the master at it, and it now owns Star Wars! So OUAT has not really tapped into the fandom’s desire for things, and while that’s great for fan artists who use things like Redbubble or whatever to make up their own swag, it is kind of funny and seems like such a missed opportunity.  In other words: The marketing strategy in general for this show has never really seemed cohesive and as well-thought out as you’d think given its influences.

Agree Cinders.  A&E are pretty cagey sometimes, but I felt like their answer about Greg Mendel indicated a certain “who cares anymore” attitude from them.  They forget they tweeted he was “rotting”?  That Tink said there wasn’t enough of him left to find his body, implying he was eaten?  More importantly though–why would they waste a question on HIM of all people? Then again, that’s happened before too that someone asked about some minor point or something in a lightening round
