ParticipantMarty, I’m not really sure why you think Gold was or is trying to prepare for Bae’s happiness…..His sacrifice was about Belle and Bae, not just Bae. His comment about Bae being happy without him was pretty straightforward – Bae is an adult, he will find his own way in life, he will find love and happiness, and that will come without his papa in his life. Gold was expressing faith that Bae will be happy – that’s all
because this is what Gold DOES he prepares everything in advance. he has a solution to every problem. and he always knows what the problems will be. this is why I SO love his character. “I’m exactly where I want to be” kind of guy. when he told Bae that he used the curse TO ENSURE [Bae] HAS A CHANCE AT HAPPINESS speaks volumes. and we will find out, hopefully, what he did to ensure Baes happiness.
with Belle it’s different. he didn’t expect her in his future, so he didn’t prepare for it. even when pan tells him to go, leave the island, start a family with Belle, he doesn’t because he knows that he needs to save his family. it’s CRUEL that when his survival instincts do finally kick in, thanks to Belle, and he finds a way to live, and believes he DOES has a future with Belle THAT’S when he dies. it’s just CRUEL!
for the whole second half of season 2 and the whole 1st half of S3 he was either dying or going to his death. finally in episode 10 we think “good, looks like he won’t die after all” and then we see ep 11[adrotate group="5"]Marty McFly
Participantthe story is that he died
the story is that he vanished.
he literally disappears from sight. we don’t know what really happened.
no, he said “we both die” not we both vanish. whatever it ended up being, everyone was expecting death. so if they find him too soon it would be anticlimactic. it’s not like Neal where the characters thought he was dead but we all knew he wasn’t. this is very different.
Marty McFly
ParticipantOne of the most common TV tropes: no body no death. The gold light was highly significant. He has broken his DO curse and is now trapped somewhere. He’ll be back.
I know, everybody keeps saying that. but the story the story is that he died. so to bring him back too early would be just blah. we can’t mix so many adventures in one half season. Belle can’t be busy gold hunting while all the other characters are battling who knows what evils. the best way to continue this story is for PEOPLE to realize how much they ALL need Rumpelstiltskin because really he is and always was their LAST HOPE. their ONLY hope sometimes. in some cases. even though he helped them through making deals. he was still always there. he was still always READY TO HELP. (for a price, of course, but always ready to help) and then EVERYONE will see the benefit in sending Belle to wherever so she can save him.
also, if we don’t get at least a few episodes with the characters finding stuff in his shop or his castle placed just for a certain event I’d be very disappointed in Rumpel’s “manipulation of the future” skills.
I MISS his character being all “I was exactly where I wanted to be” and “this was supposed to take place so I put it there”
I WANT him to have prepared for his child’s future to have placed things in places where his child can find and through blood magic or through his two students of magic (Regina and Emma) so that events can be manipulated for the greater good or whateverOK I see what you are saying about him choosing not to cut off his hand, it does make sense. he couldn’t let Belle be in danger, so yeah, I see what you’re saying. but I really think that when he was supposed to die from the dreamshade he wasn’t ready because he needed still to do many things to prepare for his son’s safety. I am HOPING that he shared some of his preparations with Belle and we could see the flashbacks of it. also, he wasn’t ready because Belle was not Belle and Cora was a threat and everything was just really dreary.

Participantthis will probably be very unpopular here, but I am almost sure Rumpel will stay dead throughout season 3b (maybe even 4), and this is why I think so:
(wait, don’t worry, Rumbellers, we WILL see passionate rumbelle kisses… in Belle’s dreams. and I’m sure we’ll see some relationship action in flashbacks)
Belle and Rumpel have something very special between them, and it is much greater than just true love. because of the places they both came from – He never really had anything like true love, and for centuries so one has ever even patted him on the shoulder. he has really lived in darkness and isolation. Belle OTOH came from a place where she was forced to marry someone superficial and behave like a proper woman of the times while in her heart all she wanted was adventure and a chance to be a hero. she was too smart to be stuck in a life like the one she had. she needed love to be layered and mysterious.
but most importantly, she was a hero to go with him, and she then brought out the hero in him.
Gold’s story arc was terribly painful and tragic and beautiful. we thought at first that all his problems began with him becoming the DO, but we later realized that his tragic life started long long before that when he was abandoned by his evil but extremely powerful magical father and that he himself in a way created neverland by giving the bean and naming PP. (names… they make things real)
so after all these years and everything he has been through, he finally meets a woman who not only loves him, she would stay with him. but he still wouldn’t just take her and forget his beloved son. so on to the making of the curse, belle is locked up etc. when he finally finds his son and then thinks he will die, it would have been an ending, but not a very happy one. there was no real reconciliation between father and son. and Belle didn’t even remember who he was.
so if we look at Rumpelstiltskin’s story arc, his story is basically finished. the end is tragic but really beautiful and epic. it’s VERY tragic because it happened the way it did – after he started believing that it will end differently, after he had his survival instincts kick in so powerfully, that even after he knew all was lost he still struggled with that cuff so desperately, and tried to cut his hand (I bet he did cut off his hand but the cuff would not allow it) he wanted SO MUCH to live and have that future with Belle…
for him to come back from the dead now would be anticlimactic to say the least. and after he’s back? there is really no story there anymore. OUAT is not about heart disease or toothbrush drama. and even if Belle has to go to Hades to save him, this story would be fantastic and wonderful, but then it would end. besides, if we think about next half of the season, it’s about something completely different. there will be no time for Rumpel hunting in Hades or wherever.so where can they go from here? I think that the only thing that would make his heroism more epic is if he had knowledge of all the evils coming their way (maybe not a perfectly clear picture of the future, you know, it’s a puzzle and all) and in real Rumpelstiltskin style, he would have an answer to all the problems that will be coming up. there would be objects, scrolls, and who knows what other magical items hidden in his castle or his shop that will show themselves through Belleexsactly when they will be needed to defeat whatever evil comes their way.
the words he said before he died might have very specific meaning. he said he used the curse to find Bae TO ENSURE THAT HE HAD A CHANCE AT HAPPINESS. this line made me stop and think… if he’d stayed with Emma and raised Henry and other children in Tallahassee, wouldn’t that be happiness? maybe not, because maybe there were other evils lurking that would take that happiness away… (now we know that Henry was in real danger of being kidnapped one day by GoaT and be shipped to neverland to die. how would his parents protect him in Tallahassee?) who knows what other evils are lurking? wouldn’t it be great if Rumpel saw all that from the beginning and prepared for it? (by making Emma powerful, by teaching Regina by leaving Belle behind, and in charge of who knows what weapons?)
when Gold said “now I’m ready” before plunging the knife, I’m ready can mean very specifically, that now he finally IS ready. His plans for the future are complete, he can leave the rest of the work to Emma, Regina, and the rest of them. all these people are going to be there to protect his son and ensure that he has a chance at happiness.
the only things that were unexpected in his fortunetelling were Belle and Henry. I don’t think he knew that he’d have anyone who would truly love him, and he didn’t realize that the child of his “Good Witch” that he sort of created, would be his own bloodline as well!
that’s why I think that when Belle goes to wherever to find him and bring him back to life, it won’t only be her lonely adventure, but everyone will join her and look for a way to bring him back. and it will probably happen toward the end of the series.oh, and I have a feeling Henry will play a big part there too

Participantyou know, after watching the Queen of Hearts I came to the conclusion that even if Rumpel is really dead and will stay dead, we haven’t seen the last of him. remember how he manipulated the entire episode from the squid ink in the scroll to the fairy dust to Regina pulling the magic out it was amazing! the only problem is that in future episodes, even if he manipulates events he won’t be there to talk about them with Emma like he did in QoH. so this is probably where Belle will come in. she might be his interpreter or something, every time something takes place where his premeditated solution just pops up, Belle will find something that explains it or whatever.
(just a side note: QoH has my favorite line in the entire series “I am the queen of hearts. do you think I’d be so careless as to keep my heart where everyone else does?”)
Marty McFly
Participantno, I don’t think he was just being depressed. I think he knew. (knowing might have made him a little depressed)he might not have known the exact circumstances of his death, but he knew. (he thought Hook’s poison will kill him, he thought he’ll die in neverland) I think that this was the point of the flashback, even though some people hope that the line “not dead just lost” is important, I think being lost in neverland and being dead are two different things.
as he tells Cora: “I can see the future. weren’t you listening”Marty McFly
Participantif it’s indeed a RumBelle episode than it can very well be a flashback to how Rumpel planned everything from beginning to end with his spinning wheel he and his quiet mind was planning planning spinning spinning and he might have included Belle in some of his thoughts, since he had no one else to talk to. and NO maybe Belle uses some of the data she collected from being his partner in planning to save everyone from Oz or something
Marty McFly
Participantif you want to continue to be RG’s friend you’ll see it…

Participant“…will explore their relationship in whatever state that is” hmmmm. this was said by the writers before we knew that Gold will die, when fans asked if we will finally see RumBelle in the same world. it sounds like there will be a lot of flashbacks not only to the EF time they had together, but also to the times they had in StoryBrooke together. there were months between the deal with the Ogres and taking Belle to the part where she is sent away and captured by Regina.
also the whole beginning of season 2 they could have had a lot of adventures together while David and Regina were trying to get Snow and Emma.
also, the one day they had together before Pan came out of the box only to be Henry in Pan’s body – and Rumbelle were unable to talk until right before death. in that one day so many things could have happened! Gold is finally able to think about a future with Belle, who knows how many barriers were broken in those few hours? now that he knew that he won’t leave her heartbroken, he probably gave her his whole heart and soul without worry. he probably took his mask off finally. oh, I’d love to see those few hours together!
that flashback in “going home” was there to show us why he was so reserved with her, why he refused to open up to her. all his life he knew that his ending shall not be a happy one. he knew that right after he finds his son, he will die. so he kept his distance from everybody, especially from people who might love him and then lose him. he was afraid of emotional entanglements for that reason. so imagine the openness and honesty of those last few hours with Belle! I’d love to hear some conversations there!
as Betsy said (I also don’t like to quote) he tried so hard to seem scary… he tried to keep his reputation as The Dark One – even though he usually asked for stupid things as the “price” for magic and was always there to help people in hopeless situations. he never ever tried to justify himself when he was told that he’s a baddie. when he was branded a coward, he called himself a coward without reserve, and when he was branded a villain as the DO he called himself a villain. ALL the other characters tried to justify themselves and didn’t understand why they aren’t loved by all. he (and snow) were the only ones who, when they did something wrong, even if it was totally justifiable, never tried to clear their conscience. gold (and snow) were very hard on themselves.Gold could have had a ton of excuses for everything (what comes to mind now is how he tells Bae in Manhattan “there’s no greater pain than regret” and Bae answers “try abandonment” if I were Gold I’d answer “I tried that already and regret is still worse” or something. (at that point we already knew about Milah and his father -only not about pan)
so no one knew that he was a good guy, not even his son. but Belle…. she always knew.
Marty McFly
ParticipantOh, and just to leave us on a cheery note…… when he says “I love you Belle, you made me stronger”………He’s already speaking of himself in the past tense
THIS is a cheery note?? *SOB!!*
