by the way, this and other such quotes led me to believe that Rumpel is really a hero not a villain and never was a villain. the problem is that he did some things like turning a man into a snail and killing Milah and turning Regina bad. maybe these actions could be excused by the fact that he saw the future and knew that these people were going to be a danger to his family one day… who knows) but somehow Belle saw that he really was a good man pretending to be a villain so that people should THINK he is dark and stay away from him. he was trying to maintain an image of The Dark One even his son believed him to be dark, but not Belle. she saw the truth right away.

I love Belle. I love Rumbelle.[adrotate group="5"]Honestly? I’m never going to stop weeping; my heart breaks into a million pieces at his last goodbyes, knowing he’s saying goodbye. What kills me is that he thought he had a future; he had JUST told Belle that the only path he wanted was the one where they are together and now the only path he can take is the one where they can never be together.
Think about how suddenly this all happened. Just two days ago, he thought Pan was trapped forever and he had a happy future with Belle and Bae. Then Pan did the old switcharoo, and really there wasn’t that much time between then and the sacrifice. So in essence, Gold still thought he had a future up until maybe half hour or so before his last scene. Then, he had to make the ultimate decision. My baby had such little time to process the fact of his own death……it’s heartbreaking. Everything happened so quickly – even the goodbyes.
It’s very telling, sigh, that Gold told Bae that he accepted the fact that Bae would find happiness without him. As a father, I think he was able to do this because parents have to let go if their adult children all the time. Of course he’s pained that he won’t get to know his son again, but Gold knows that Bae will be happy and that’s all that matters.
With Belle, not only can’t Gold promise her happiness (she’s losing her happy ending, HIM), but he is, in fact, dying with immense regret and pain. I don’t believe he came to terms with the fact that he and Belle would never have a life together, that they were denied a future, a family. That is to say, he accepted it because that was the consequence of his decision, but there is no solace for him at all as there is with Bae….except perhaps that Belle would be spared to live a full life and that they did at least know the most extraordinary love. I loved how he told her she made him stronger, basically saying that he was able to make this sacrifice because of her. She’s hero, as he said in the phone call scene – she’s always been his hero.
I still can’t get over that moment when Gold is frozen in place, like Belle, and he gazes at her with the look of the most incredible love. He’s trying to memorize her, imprint her in his heart so that she will always be with him, even in death. It’s incredibly touching and speaks to their great love that Belle is the one he needs most to look at in his final moments, sob.
Belle is staring at Gold as well, completely helpless- and that is so tragic because she can’t say or do anything. Her eyes, though- they are so full of love- and that’s also something that Gold needs to take with him. She loved him, always did; he knows how magical and powerful their love is, he had faith in that love when he needed her to find Pandora’s Box. So, going to his death, he needs this last reminder of the lasting and epic love he and Belle shared.

Oh, Betsy reading your post made me weep… and yes, the episode right before this Gold was so happy that he COULD have a future with Belle only to realize in his final torturous moments (trying to get the cuff off-oh my heart) that it was an illusion. the look they share in the end is just so precious… oh… *running away to cry*The problem with the Rumbelle ship is that it’s representing sacrifice
I think we saw it most clearly in this 3rd season throughout NL
Pan kept telling Rumpel “you can go. leave the island” he kept
saying that Rumpel should go to Belle and start a new family.
Rumpel could have had his happy ending with Belle, but he chose Bae.
I think the whole relationship between Gold and Belle was simply to give the audience
something to cry about. even right before he dies he speaks to Bae first.
it’s there just to show us that no matter how wonderful this ship is,
the father in Rumpel will never put anything before his beloved son Bae.
even as far back as Skin Deep we see how when TLK the curse almost broke Rumpel exploded
because he needed the curse to find his son. he would not let himself get
distracted even though the distraction is so wonderful and loving and even though
he could use this true love to create another Emma, another product of true love.
this is probably why this relationship is so perfect with hardly any internal conflicts.
it’s there only to show how much Rumpel loved Bae
and also to torture our emotions.I can’t wait for Emma to find Neal’s apartment and see the dream catcher!!!!!!!!!
I wish August would never have found them and they’d be living in Tallahassee with Henry and his siblings (the curse would never break, but who cares?well, betsypaige24, let’s look at what we have so far: Belle has a father who is a king to a small village and who was going to marry her off to some Gaston guy whom she did not love. we know nothing of her mother or any of her home life at all. all we know about her is that she is a book-worm who likes heroes and wants to be a hero too. we also know that she can tell things about people she can see inside people’s hearts (as she says many times on the show)
now what do we know about Rumpelstiltskin.. I don’t even know where to begin, but let’s just say that he was written to be the most crucified suffering soul that had ever lived. so for someone who’s life is so tragic, death seems almost a relief.
but then…. they met and fell in love and suddenly life seems better for them both.
as of now the show is keeping things as they started them – they never stopped torturing the Rumbelle ship and even more, their Gold character.
this is probably the main reason I do believe he’s dead. it follows their mean evil fate that they gave Gold, only it happened in the middle of a season not in the show’s finally.
THIS fact is what gives me some hope for a happy ending, because if they meant to create a character who is emotionally tortured throughout the show and just tell us a tragedy story it would make sense to have him die in the end, but since this is the middle, maybe the game changes now and he will stop being hurt all the time and start living a normal life with an actual chance at happiness.
*sigh* sorry for the ramblingI don’t know. I think Hook did get his happy ending, or at least what he would consider to be his happy ending. all he ever wanted for more years than he could count is to find a way to kill Rumpel. so Hook is the only one who actually did get a happy ending. It would be interesting to see how they will play this out, with Hook. now that he finally saw his revenge, how does he feel now.
If Rumple is dead, I think it’s safe to say that Regina, also a villain, will never see her happy ending. But, if Rumple is alive, (in whatever state he’s in) I can’t wait to see where Regina’s journey to happiness takes her.
no, even though Rumpelstiltskin is dead Regina can still have a happy ending. after all, she became a villain because he taught her magic. he could have infused some common sense into those magic lessons: cut your losses, don’t waste your life on revenge, love again, etc. but no… he just taught he magic and power. now, although she became a villain and killed people all by herself, she is really only a product of her magic man.
She started out as a sweet kind gentle girl who loved a stable boy. after her mother killed him, instead of blaming her mother for her heartache, she blamed a little girl. THIS is where her character began to deteriorate. it’s when she started on the road to evil. so can you really blame Cora for putting her there? not really. REGINA should have had more sense then that. it’s ok to hate her mother, but why snow?
This is an old one, but it made me cry so much because the BIGGEST and HARDEST thing Rumpel did for his son was becoming the dark one. it really was the ultimate sacrifice. more than 3×11
