He regained respect for him before he died. Rumple: Bae.
Neal: Papa.
Rumple: Where’s Henry?
Neal: He’s safe, he’s safe.
Rumple: I told you I wasn’t going to hurt the boy.
Neal: I know, I’m sorry. Why didn’t you tell me Pan was your father?
Rumple: Because I didn’t want you to know that I was as bad a father as he was. Because we’re both the same, me and him. Because we both abandoned our sons.
Neal: No, you’re not the same. You came back for me, Papa. And after Rumple had vanished, Neal said with an anguished mix of pride and sorrow: “My father did what he had to. He saved us.” Their relationship played out well IMO, and came full circle by the end. There was forgiveness and acceptance by the time they left NL, and then Rumple did the brave thing to save them, unlike over the portal all those years ago when he’d saved himself.it’s true, they did make up in the end on the ship, but if Neal had only known why his father was so afraid of that portal, who he lost the last time he used that bean, and how he tried to dig into the ground a few seconds after he went through. if you look, it’s Bae who pulls his father into the portal and his father is holding his arm trying to “rescue” him from that green whirl. not only that rhight after he is shown the bean he looses his nerve. he says something like “this is a trick to tear us apart..” or something. I think the circumstances of this abandonment were very much against Rumpel

ParticipantMy current headcanon is that Rumple ended up in Hades. Belle and Bae go to get him out during the Lost Year after 311. It’s going to be a lot like the Orpheus and Eurydice tale from Ancient Greece, but gender-swapped and with Belle succeeding. I think while in Hades, Rumple will be forced to see all his greatest crimes laid out.
yeah, killing Milah, the evil mother who, just like Pan, abandoned her son, killing Tamara who would have probably died anyway from dreamshade, killing Honora who was probably working for Pan drawing a picture of the dagger or something, teaching Regina magic (is in my opinion his worst and most selfish deed)
but seriously, for someone struggling with an evil DO curse taking root in him, he wasn’t that big of a villain. Snow also killed guards, and charming killed in wars
Speaking of charming, remember when he held the DO dagger? what were his words again? “now that DO can finally be controlled” or something? this dagger seems to have a powerful effect on even the best, most heroic people.
I really think Rumpel’s most ugly crime was to teach Regina to be bad. it’s the only one I cannot find any excuse for

He isn’t? We know this for sure. Where’s this confirmation? I also think the prophecy was unavoidable. It’s fate.
Well no explicit confirmation like “nope not dead!” from A and E but they did say that Rumbelle would be in the same world for an extended period of time working on their relationship which pretty much implies alive-ness
this is no proof. they said they’ll explore their relationship “in whatever state that is” which can easily be a mourning Belle and a dead Rumpelstiltskin could also be memories of happier times in the past, or flashbacks, or even a vision!Rumpel just like the Vision!Belle from neverland…
Back to Baelfire: I don’t think he was a very appreciative son. I get why he would be afraid of “the dark one” that suddenly overtook his dear father, but now that he is an adult shouldn’t he stop and think WHY his father became the DO and what a great sacrifice this was – to lay down his soul for his son to be safe? Me thinks the becoming a DO is a far greater sacrifice than the death in the end. I like that they connected the two and that the DO dagger had to be used for the one sacrifice that Bae DID appreciate. but when you think back, Rumpelstiltskin sacrificed everything for his son:
Image – he was branded the town coward because he wanted to be alive to take care of his son and not let him grow up unprotected (we, the audience did not know it then, but PP was after his descendants and no child of Rumpel would be safe)
dignity – he wouldn’t swordfight with a pirate over his beloved wife because he wasn’t good at swordfighting and didn’t want his son to be orphaned from both father and mother
soul – became the Dark One
love – he could have stayed with Belle and started a family with her – his true love, but he sacrificed that happiness so that he could keep working on that curse which will bring him his son back and ensure he has a chance at happiness despite pan and then again and again he chose Bae over Belle
he lived in darkness and isolation because he knew that Bae was in isolation in neverland, suffering, and he suffered along with him, didn’t give himself a break.
now how does Bae repay him? tells him to get out of his apartment and then (only because of Emma) gives him three minutes to talk. if anyone would watch this episode again (manhattan) they will bawl in pain I bet. then in neverland he sets everyone against him.
now that he died for him, I hope Bae will at least have more respect for his father when speaking about him with robin hood or mulan

ParticipantPeter: I never loved Rumple.
Think that pretty much answers it. The way he talked down to Rumple to in the finale when they were alone in his shop, I just wanted to give Rumple a big hug. That was so mean and cold.
I hate Malcolm with the fire of a thousand suns. I want him strung up and clobbered with pointy things.
Oh, he was. with the DO dagger and then burnt with the fire of thousand suns… but so was Rumpelstiltskin *sob*
He was a horrible father to the son who was so loving and was going to work hard to help make money enough for both of them… and how does Malcolm repay? he wants to kill all the people who love his son and then keep him there in the new neverland to suffer for eternity. how crazy is that?
I bet it was Pan who went back and made sure everyone branded Rumpel as the town coward. I bet all the horrible things that happened to Rumpel stem from Pan
His life is just so tragic, it overwhelms me.Marty McFly
Participantanother reason this is very possibly vision!belle. remember the first episode when Belle walks in asking for Mr Gold? he is touching her shoulder and checking if she’s really there. its possible he’d been envisioning her a lot before that! and she was a mess and wasn’t wearing the blue dress and she was calling him Mr Gold, so it confused him
I LOVE the idea of him revealing his thoughts and feeling about the prophecy and about the future (which probably showed him dying right after he finally reconciles with Bae) and talking to Belle about how he feels about what he did to Regina etc.Marty McFly
ParticipantWow, rumpelsgirl, this theory is right on!!! Wow. I hope they use more of these visions in his dark castle of belle because it would bevery hard to otherwise portray his thought process, and if he had someone to talk to it would help audience understand what he is thinking, why he does what he does. Maybe we will see how not a villain he is when we understand his actions through vision belle

ParticipantI am coming out of lurking, but I want to really talk about why it MUST be Neal. not because how the *look* together, but based on the story so far. it makes most sense that Emma and Bae should be together. It’s funny that Hook finally got over Milah after kissing Emma. this might mean that he was in love with Milah through some kind of love spell or something. because remember Emma kissed Graham and broke HIS curse? it wasn’t true love or it would have broken the whole town’s curse, but because she is a savior, it broke the curse of the one she kissed. who knows, maybe Tink and him would have made a couple if not for his Milah obsession. when Emma kissed him, that obsession was broken so now he can love others. (although Tink will be a big problem since she can’t love as a fairy or she’ll lose her wings again)
it’s also funny how Hook finally did get his revenge, but after he already got over Milah and that didn’t matter to him as much anymore.

Participantboth ensured that their sons had a chance at happiness and accepted that it cannot be with them.

ParticipantOnce someone forsakes their own life in order to save the lives of others, I’d say it’s safe to officially de-classify them as a villain from here on in. So if he’s no longer really a villain, then even if it were true that villains don’t get happy endings, it wouldn’t apply to him.
His final words to his papa (“I’m a villain. And villain’s don’t get happy endings”) tore me apart. He’s so much more than that. He is infinatley complex. He’s damaged and broken and has done horrible things in the names of power and love and fatherhood. He gets his happy freaking ending. (still not okay)
Me too. He is NOT a villain, but a hero who never stopped fighting with that DO curse and Belle made him stronger to be able to fight it internally while he ALSO had tons of dark forces to fight with externally. He touched everyone’s life, just like Snow told Emma that she did. And he will never have a child that’s a product of true love because he never got a chance at happiness. the worst part is that he knew this all along, he knew that he will not have a happy ending, but he kept fighting to ensure that his son will. All these years. This is not a villain.
