[adrotate group="5"]This is going to be a ratings nightmare. People will tune in at 8pm expecting OuaT, see Obama start the speech, assume it’s not on and switch to something else. Ugh.
To be fair, FOX is also delaying their primetime lineup by 15 minutes for Obama’s speech. NBC and CBS will likely follow suit. It’s not like these broadcast networks want to delay their primetime programming, as they’re concerned about the ratings just as much as we are. However, they feel obligated to broadcast Obama’s speech, not just out of respect, but also out of safety following the tragic terrorist attack in San Bernadino. It could have been worse. We could have had OUAT interrupted for a “BREAKING NEWS” report without any prior planning, meaning we would have missed parts of the episode. Sadly, I have experienced that with an episode of Agents of SHIELD this Season, and an episode of Agent Carter last Winter. A delayed broadcast is much preferable than an interrupted one.
Due to President Obama’s address delaying tomorrow night’s OUAT by 15 minutes, don’t be surprised if the fast ratings on Monday look really off. They might appear higher than normal, but the final ratings will adjust with Obama’s speech taken out of the equation.
Note that this should likely only effect the East Coast/Central airings. The West Coast airing will probably air at its normal time without delays.
The other thing is that it seems like they could have easily done this Hook flashback without involving Regina, and without contradicting anything in the timeline. The important aspect of this is between Hook and his father. I mean Hook is almost 200 years old. That opens up a lot of different time periods this flashback could have taken place in. Thanks to what “Poor Unfortunate Soul” established, we also know that Pan sent Hook back to the Enchanted Forest on errands, so its not like they were limited to doing flashbacks in Neverland either. They also didn’t need to shoehorn Evil Queen Regina into this flashback, when we’ve heard that there’s yet another Evil Queen Regina flashback coming up in 512, the very next episode.
This is one of those cases when the writers make their lives more difficult than it needs to be. Unless the blue dress (still my favorite EQ dress, bummed I’m not going to see it again) has been torn apart and is currently another frock, then all they need to do is have Regina wear the blue outfit out in the field meeting Hook and it wouldn’t feel so forced and shoe-horned in.
What’s weird is that Lana DID film in that blue outfit during the time this episode was filmed, so perhaps there is a scene bridging the two sets of flashbacks?:

Welp, they did acknowledge the continuity from “Queen of Hearts”, but it comes off as sloppy. There’s a cut in between scenes in the Youtube video below (About 1:06 in). It seems like they’re placing the new flashback inbetween where Regina reveals Hook her plans, but before she enchants his hook. Clearly these scenes were written/filmed as if they were happening back to back, because Regina is wearing the same outfit in both and she’s holding onto Hook’s hook. The writers are inserting these new flashbacks where they see fit :
