But Ruby had a bean? How’d that happen? I missed a bit of the dialogue as I watched with my sister so you know what that means (nonstop talking).
She mentioned something about Anton trying to re-grow the beans from the crop Regina burned down, and how he was able to manage to get one grown.
I actually didn’t have that much of an issue with it. Honestly, I was glad that they didn’t forget that Ruby was last seen at Granny’s at the end of Season 3. Also, for once they actually SHOWED us the explanation, rather than having Ruby mention it vaguely.
Even if Merlin is dead in the present day (which he probably is), there is now a handy bag of McGuffin water that lets a person commune with the Dead (a la Merida and her dad).
Fergus also told Merida not to waste the rest of it, implying that she still has some left.
One of the recent Adam and Eddy interviews simply said that they would “plant the seeds” in this episode, which it seems like that’s what they did. They also said that both Mulan and Ruby would be in 5B, so I guess that’s when the relationship will truly start to develop.
I think Hook, not Emma, might be the one involved with Merlin’s disappearance. Merlin’s voice mail simply said “the Dark One knows I’m here”, but now we know that they could have misled us into thinking it was Emma, and it was actually Hook going after him.
Now explain the hat.
The hat is anyone’s guess. Maybe he originally created the hat to absorb Nimue’s darkness, and realized it wouldn’t work? However, that would result in another contradiction, given that the Apprentice tried to do the same with Rumple’s darkness.

No but seriously. What did the Apprentice do when Merlin was tree’d? Did he have visions in which Merlin told him what to do? How did he live so long? Why did he start to age? And WHERE ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH DID THAT HAT/HAT ROOM COME FROM?! AND WHY WAS MERLIN BLUE SMOKE?!

Looking back at the one scene in Season 4 where the Apprentice talks to Merlin, Merlin’s smoke was coming out of a cauldron. So I’m guessing the Apprentice was using the magical mushroom method to communicate with Merlin this entire time. He was chosen by Merlin, after all.
But Merlin was tree’d long before Hook (and his Papa) were alive?
Though, I do no put it past this show to have a tree craft a ring.
OH GOD.
Merlin’s the GIVING TREE. He let PapaJones hack off a branch to make that ring!
Well, we still don’t know how Merlin appeared as a movie theater usher in our world back in the 1980s, when he was a tree. The other option is Merlin could have had his Apprentice give PapaJones the ring. The Apprentice has been doing all of Merlin’s dirty work during tree time, after all.
