–Hook blackmailing Rumple. Why couldn’t he just ASK Rumple for help? Instead he just goes and blackmails him. Three steps forward, five steps back with these guys. Just reform them already.

He didn’t just ask Rumple for help because Rumple told him prior to the blackmailing that “unless you have something to offer me, I’m afraid I can be no further help.” Rumple was not going to just help Hook. That’s not how the Dark One works. Plus, blackmail might not be the most honorable method, but Rumple really only has himself to blame for getting himself in this dagger swapping mess.

    Anyway, here are my likes/dislikes:

    Likes
    – The Snow Queen. Elizabeth Mitchell is doing great so far, and I like how she’s more of a quiet intellectual villain.
    – Getting to finally see Will Scarlet. About time that his appearance on the show is no longer a spoiler.
    – Hook and Elsa’s teamwork. Who better for Hook to have as a companion than the very woman who shares a lot of the same traits as Emma? They have a lot of potential on the platonic level.
    – Emma and Charming’s daughter/father teamwork. I’m a sucker for Daddy Charming stuff.
    – I actually liked the Operation Mongoose stuff, because it’s a chance for Regina and Henry to bond. Plus, if anyone can help Regina learn about the book’s author while keeping her morals in check, it’s Henry.

    Mixed
    – I liked getting to see Hans. Seeing how Elsa met the Snow Queen was cool too, but the flashback segment just felt slow. It’s probably because this is a build up to future flashbacks.
    – The Outlaw Queen stuff.

My panel recap, including teasers from the episode:

I had the fortune of attending the Once Upon a Time panel at New York Comic Con. The panel included a full length screening of this Sunday’s episode, “Rocky Road.” I will tease what to expect from the episode, along with recapping highlights from the Q&A session with Adam Horowitz, Eddy Kitsis, and Jennifer Morrison:

Plot teasers from “Rock Road” Once Upon a Time episode

Be careful from whom you accept free ice cream.
Get ready to finally meet Hans. He wants to prove to his teasing older brothers that, this time, he has a way of thwarting Elsa.
Elsa will explore her curiosity regarding how she got her powers.
An act of true love is put to the test.
Archie gives a stressful someone a voluntary session on the go.
A certain someone who has yet to appear on the parent show might be of some assistance in tracking down the true ice wall culprit.
We will find out exactly why Emma has been seemingly avoiding Hook.
Elizabeth Mitchell’s character implies that she also shares a past with one of the non-Frozen characters.
    Teaser quotes

Note these might not be word for word, as I’m only recounting from a single viewing.

“I’m sorry I got you mixed up in this.”
“Do what I tell you, for once.”
    “Hey, Dairy Queen.”
“I was never fond of sheriffs, much.”
“If it’s one thing I excel at, it’s survival.”
A return of “it’s all about the tumblers.”
Highlights (and spoilers) from the OUAT Q&A with Adam Horowitz, Eddy Kitsis, and Jennifer Morrison:

Adam and Eddy state that the biggest concern with both Disney and themselves regarding the Frozen characters was making sure to honor how they were depicted in the movie. The twist is not to reinvent them, but to see how they fit into the Once Upon A Time universe.
Next week’s episode features a date between Hook and Emma.
The story behind who wrote the book is something that will spread into the second half of the Season, as well.
August was confirmed as not the book’s author.
Jennifer Morrison notes that Emma will be fighting to prove that she and Regina can have a good friendship.
Rumple’s journey, this season, is described as “self-serving.”
Adam and Eddy mentioned how there’s a balance they have to keep track of between the main and secondary characters.
Be sure to watch this Sunday’s new episode of Once Upon a Time at 8/7 central on ABC, and come back here for our podcasts!

Oh, Matt. Question. There was a tweet that said “now we know how Elsa gets trapped” in the urn but the picture was really dark because it looked like Kristoff?

We don’t see how Elsa was trapped in the flashback, so it must be for a future episode. The Snow Queen claims that Anna was the one to trap Elsa in the urn, but that very well could be a lie as Elsa herself doubted it. The Snow Queen is clearly prejudice against normal folk, due to the trust issues from those who don’t understand her powers. So it’s likely she was just messing with Elsa to get her on her side. Also, Elsa doesn’t remember her first encounter with the Snow Queen that we see in this episode’s flashback, as her memory was messed with prior to her imprisonment within the urn.

What’s the deal with Rumple and Snow Queen? If it turns out he knew about her hopping through doors to the 80s and associating with Emma…I might need to find some tables to flip.

Their scene was brief, but they definitely already knew each other when they talked. Rumple was all “were you glad Emma didn’t remember you?” Nothing is said about how he knows and how much.

I attended the screening/panel. I wrote up a teaser article and panel recap, so expect it up at some point depending upon when Daniel gets around to posting it.

I enjoyed the episode, overall. I’ll talk about one of the highlights that I haven’t seen discussed much from everyone else who saw it. That was of course finally seeing Will Scarlet show up. His entrance is pretty amusing, though his part in the episode was fairly small. It’s just a small taste, but it was a joy just to see him again. And no, how Will got back to Storybrooke and Anastasia’s current fate were not mentioned yet before anyone asks. I’ll be out at NYCC tomorrow and Sunday too, so I doubt I’ll be on again til tomorrow night. If anyone has specific questions not spoiled in detail elsewhere, feel free to ask.

I believe Hook’s new outfit is for his upcoming date with Emma, and may not necessarily be his new permanent outfit.

Jamie Chung (Mulan) will also be at New York Comic Con. Not for Once, but for the Big Hero 6 panel tomorrow:

A good way of keeping track on the likelihood of Once getting a 5th Season is to look at TVByTheNumbers’ Cancel/Renew Index. They update it all Season based on a variety of ratings factors, and they tend to be fairly accurate. As it currently stands, Once is far from the in danger of cancellation territory, which could change by the end of the Season. However, I would think Once would have to drop A LOT for that to happen, as in dipping below the 2.0 demos. And even if the Frozen half of the Season remains fairly high, but the 2nd half takes a drop, the boost from the first half of the Season would factor highly into the Season average. The Season average performance is what they typically look at when deciding to cancel or renew a series. For example, even when Agents of SHIELD had sharp drops throughout its first Season, the higher numbers of the earlier episodes helped in the long run. :

If this guy is Yen Sid, I’d be a bit surprised. We never got a casting call for him, and usually when that happens, the writers have an actor in mind to play a really big meaty role.

I recall Dorothy never got a public casting call, too. We didn’t even find out who was playing her til a week before her episode aired.

Something I recently thought about. Regina, Robin and Roland got ice cream at the end of the Season 3 finale. Minutes before Elsa’s onscreen introduction, I might add. They likely got ice cream from the same shop, which might have been purposely added as an Easter egg regarding the writers’ plans for Season 4.
