ModeratorMulan and Pocahontas could work!!! Two very independent women!
It would be very very hard for ONCE to bring Pocahontas to the show in a believable way because Pocahontas a real life person with a very traceable historical record. Mulan is largely mythic and there may or may not have been a historical Mulan. But the general idea is a good one.
Yep. I would think incorporating her into the show like that would risk upsetting her living descendants. There’s a fine line between purely fictional characters and historical figures. Even Mulan was pushing it, but there’s more ambiguity behind whether she was real or not compared to Pocahontas. Actually, if they were to dare risk incorporating Pocahontas, they would have done so in Neverland, but they opted to not show Neverland’s Native Americans at all. The Native Americans in Peter Pan are actually seen as very politically incorrect these days, so not having them at all might have been to save face.

ModeratorRedirection of thread: More LGBTQ couples you’d like to see on ONCE, using characters already established or not established–Disney or otherwise. Also, what sort of stories would you write for them?
I actually liked the earlier suggestions of making Hercules gay, with possibly pairing him with a human version of Philoctetes. I just want Hercules on the show, period.

ModeratorRe: other pairs. Well, I want them to get the heck out of Disney already. I adore Disney but there are so many other myths and stories we could be doing. I’d love to see them adapt something from Norse mythology or Native American mythology and put their spin on it. What if we had two Valkyries who were together?
And unfortunately when they have tried steering away from Disney and fantasy as a whole, it wasn’t too well received. For example, there were plenty who were disappointed in Dr. Whale being Victor Frankenstein and how that story was handled. And even when they tried to adapt a fairy tale, but completely stay away from the Disney adaptation, it backfired. I’m of course talking about how they handled Rapunzel’s story in “The Tower.” Had they taken enough elements from Tangled (Flynn Ryder instead of Charming, Mother Gothel, etc), it might have been better received and even better written than what we got. Changing Rapunzel’s race is a discussion in itself, but I think it still could have worked had they have done what I suggested. I think because the show started out as Disney the Fanfic by using Disney specific character names and even plot elements, it’s been hard to get the audience to accept whenever they steer away from it. Aside from the Rapunzel story just being a mess on its own, it was confusing for the audience to go from the trend of borrowing Disney elements for all other fairy tale characters, but not Rapunzel. To plenty of viewers, the idea of crossing over Disney and other fantasy lore was the appeal that got them into watching the show to begin with. It’s probably why we’re getting the Frozen characters in a manner that is faithful to the movie.
To get back on topic, this is essentially why the writers have been weary about separating Disney canon couples. The closest we got was Rumbelle, but they wrote around that by making “Beast” Rumple’s nickname and sharing enough of his traits. Of course you could also say Mulan is the closest they got from breaking Disney canon couples, due to her implied homosexuality, but as it currently stands she has yet to end up with anyone. And even when a couple didn’t get together in the traditional story like Ariel and Eric, they still opted to keep them together to appease the general audience who grew up on Disney pop culture. Maybe had the show not opted to use Disney names and themes specific to their adaptations in the first place, the show would have been able to get away with the suggest deviations from Disney culture, but it’s too little too late.

ModeratorI am all for having a queer relationship on the show, but it of course needs to be written well. I don’t want it to come across as “we’re just randomly inserting a homosexual relationship to please the LGBT community.” I should note that in the D23 interview last month, Adam and Eddy actually said they would love to bring Mulan back later this Season, so we may get our wish in regards to expanding her ambiguous sexuality.
I agree Elsa could have been introduced as a Lesbian character, but I recall they don’t want to focus on any romantic relationships with her whatsoever, whether it be hetero or homosexual. The sister relationship between Elsa and Anna is the most important aspect of the movie, so it makes sense to focus on that. Plus, Disney might have felt it was too soon to introduce a romantic partner for Elsa in any medium she’s featured in, even if the Once Upon A Time universe is not canon with the movie’s canon. For one, a sequel to Frozen is inevitable, and chances are that will introduce said romantic partner. Unlike Peter Pan, Rapunzel, or Beauty & The Beast, Once’s adaption of Frozen has so far stayed faithful to the movie too, which likely means less liberties with the already established story. Hence why the Frozen storyline on the show takes place after the movie, rather than re-telling the movie with random M. Night Shyamalanish twists.

Discussing What Has Transpired and What is UpcomingABC invites new and devoted “Once Upon a Time” viewers to take another look at this popular fantasy series in the new special, “Once Upon a Time: Storybrooke Has Frozen Over,” which will explore the show in a way that will bring new viewers up to date — but which current viewers will also find illuminating – in anticipation of the exciting fourth season premiere. The special will take a look at the role that family plays in the show and never giving up on the ones you love, our heroes’ journey from breaking the curse to the ramifications of magic in our world, travelling to Neverland to save Henry from an evil Peter Pan, their battle with The Wicked Witch of the West upon their return, and the upcoming presence of Elsa, the Ice Queen from Arendelle, in Storybrooke. The special features interviews with executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to help tell the story of “Once Upon a Time: Storybrooke Has Frozen Over,” airing SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 (7:00-8:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Welcome to Storybrooke, Maine, a small town that probably won’t show up on your GPS, but it’s a magical place to visit. Reality and myth merged after Emma broke Regina’s curse, which had deprived the fairy tale characters of their memories and trapped them in our modern world. When they finally regained their identities, our heroes were dismayed to discover that they weren’t transported back to Fairy Tale Land. To make matters worse, Rumplestiltskin – aka Mr. Gold – decided to escalate his power struggle with Regina by introducing magic into the town. But this is our world, and magic always has a tendency to yield unfathomable consequences.
After defeating Zelena – the Wicked Witch of the West – Emma and Hook were pulled into her time portal, which brought them back to the Enchanted Forest of the past. When they accidentally thwarted the initial meeting of Snow White and Prince Charming, Emma and Hook had to find a way to fix the timeline and get them together, or risk altering their futures and possibly obliterating Emma and Henry’s existence — not an easy task to undertake. When Emma was captured by The Evil Queen, she met a female prisoner scheduled to be executed. Upon finding a way to escape, Emma saved the prisoner’s life by taking her along. But Hook believed the woman’s fate was to die and feared that things could be altered by her continued existence. After successfully getting her parents back on track, Emma, Hook and the prisoner found themselves captured by Rumplestiltskin and imprisoned in a room that contained his most unpredictable magic. With no way to escape, Emma discovered that her own magic had returned, and she was able to whisk herself, Hook and the prisoner back to present day Storybrooke. Upon their joyous return, Emma learned that the prisoner was none other than Robin Hood’s wife, Marian, who was presumed dead in the previous timeline. Regina and Robin Hood had begun to fall madly in love with one another, but with Marian’s return, their relationship could be in danger. And, unbeknownst to anyone, Emma and Hook also brought back Elsa.
You never give up on the people you love…
The Storybrooke residents do not know what Elsa has in store for them. Back in the past, in Elsa’s kingdom of Arendelle, we will discover what happened to her, her sister Anna and Kristoff, and how and why Elsa became a prisoner of Rumplestiltskin. And now that Emma has brought back Robin Hood’s wife, Marian, and possibly sparked the end of Regina’s relationship with him, will she return to her old, evil ways and do everything in her power to get even? And newlyweds Belle and Rumplestiltskin continue to be deeply in love with each other. But Rumple is hiding a secret from Belle; one that, if found out, could destroy their happiness – he continues to be the master of the dagger that calls upon him to be the Dark One. Can Emma and Hook commit to one another, and can these two damaged people take their love to the next level? Mary Margaret and David have a new baby, Prince Neal, and are looking forward to raising him into a proud, brave and loving adult. But they are still sad that they were not able to do this with Emma, instead helping her escape the curse when she was first born and not meeting her again until she was 28 years old. Henry is very happy to have both of his mother’s back in Storybrooke. But with biological mom Emma and paternal grandfather Rumplestiltskin’s blood running through his veins, he will be tested by both the light and the darkness. Finally, Will Scarlet (Michael Socha, “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland”), a former member of Robin Hood’s band of Merry Men, has traveled across many lands to make his way to Storybrooke. He finds himself intertwined in the goings-on in town for the first time as his mysterious past pushes him to an unknown future.
As the season continues, new fairy tale characters will be revealed and old acquaintances will be revisited. But not everyone can be trusted.
“Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David Nolan, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry, Michael Socha as Will Scarlet and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold.
“Once Upon a Time” is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format with a 5.1 channel surround sound. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate.

ModeratorA and E said that they will be telling Will’s story on OUAT in a way that it doesn’t necessitate people having watched OUATWL. (which means I greatly fear for Anastasia)
Except they have blatantly stated they will address Will’s relationship with Robin, which yes I imagine casuals would still understand because he is supposed to be Will Scarlet. However, to see the actual flashback with Will and Robin requires watching Wonderland, at least that episode.

ModeratorSounds like a lot of the same old. Emma and Elsa having a bond was brought up somewhere before, as I recall it being mentioned how both have issues trying to control their magic.
