Everything I have seen that is negative just reinforces that people who want to hate Hook will find a way to do so and have no understanding of him at all.
HIS defense mechanism is to slip back into his Captain Hook persona. We have been seeing way more Killian lately but things were getting too close for comfort when she genuinely thanked him for something he did for her. He put his head down and scratched behind his ear which shows a slight discomfort with the situation. The guy is NOT USED to being thanked, just like Emma is NOT USED to somebody putting her first. They are KINDRED SPIRITS FOR A REASON.
He completely slipped back into his defense mechanism in that moment and that brought out the more suggestive side that does flirt and openly but he certainly doesn’t force anything. He wants her to come to him. If anything it reminded me of Han & Leia, and Pacey & Joey. The whole count to 10 if you don’t want me to kiss you thing, except in this case he was just awkwardly asking for one figuring that she would SHUT HIM DOWN like she usually does.
Killian Jones is an awkward mess. He’s been loyal to the memory of Milah for centuries and his mask is Captain Hook. He’s been slowly taking that off all season but the moment things get too real for him, aka: Emma is GENUINELY THANKING HIM, he slips and puts it back on.
He’s a flirt, we know this, and he has a way of flirting that some see as off-putting but Emma used to just roll her eyes and walk away. He did the same type of thing in the hospital in ITNOTB. It’s how he gets the point across that he’s interested but not pushing and it can be fun and bantery which Emma PLAYS ALONG WITH to a point and usually shuts him down. I think he is BLOWN AWAY that she didn’t in this moment because HE EXPECTS HER TO WHAT SHE’S ALWAYS DONE.
Emma can take care of herself. She wasn’t forced or guilt-tripped into anything. If they were in a similar situation to this but a few weeks ago? She would have walked away, no question. She is not a meek little wallflower that can’t handle the way he flirts! Emma will punch somebody or push them away or walk away no matter WHO they are (she pushed Graham away the first time he kissed her in a very “I need to feel something and you make me feel” way even though she DID like him and was jealous of his arrangement with Regina). This was Emma doing whatever she pleases because SHE wanted to. She’s been drawn to him from the start and sees PAST his silly awkward flirting. She KNOWS he is a man capable of caring VERY DEEPLY and that she has been drawn to him for awhile but didn’t let herself trust him because she’s been burned. He has been SHOWING her that everything he said before was the truth and he has been helpful to her. She JUST acknowledged that he had no reason to go out of his way to help anybody especially Charming and he did it anyway and specifically said “I couldn’t let your father perish on this island” turning it back on her as if to say “It’s all for you.” That is HUGE for Emma.
It just completely baffles me that people can’t see that. I wish they hadn’t released that clip without the context of the whole episode because I feel like it should overall be a great one to show the multiple sides of Hook and Killian and maybe (hopefully) learn that one really is him putting up his walls and defenses. He loved Milah AS KILLIAN and Hook was all about hate and revenge and now Emma is showing him the path to becoming Killian again and it scares him as much as it scares her!
His Hook persona is his mask. It always has been. It’s as plain as day to some of us as Emma’s walls are to most everyone. If you’re intent on hating him, I could see how his flirting might be offensive to some and how it could seem like he was trying to guilt her into kissing him but this is Emma. She could have left if she wanted to. She already said her thanks and said that the thanks was enough. She CHOSE to kiss him and to kiss him LIKE THAT and regardless of how it started, they’re not going to be able to walk away from that. Emma was struggling to walk away and couldn’t handle being near him in that moment because it felt TOO real and like it might lead to something more if they were anywhere near each other in that moment. You could see it on her face and in her breathiness. She had to grab on tighter at the end so she wouldn’t fall over. And Killian? He got way more than he bargained for but she dished it right back at him (which he LOVES) and clearly was moved by it too but still, when she asked him not to follow her immediately, he just said “As you wish” – he’s letting her have control here. If he were the dirty rotten pirate everyone is SO QUICK TO JUDGE, he would have just gone in to try and kiss her (like Graham did I might add), and she would have pushed him away. He lets her come to him. He knows she’s got a lot on her mind and that it isn’t up to him. His feelings are getting deeper and deeper (no way he realized just HOW deep until that kiss knocked him over the head) but he respects her, even when hiding behind that mask. They challenge each other and they BOTH LOVE THAT. They make a great TEAM for a reason.
What is driving me bonkers right now is that we just watched last week Neal be a complete and total hypocrite with the way he treated Rumple (STILL mad about that) knowing that he was planning to go to the woman he inflicted a lot of pain and trust issues on and ask for forgiveness and a 2nd chance while PARALYZING his father in the middle of the jungle and planning to leave him in NL and saying goodbye to him as if it’s for good because he can never trust him again. THIS is the man who’s on his way to ask for a 2nd chance with someone he hurt but loved the whole time and he doesn’t see how his behavior is exactly what he should expect from Emma? Literally almost the same argument?
But that is somehow better than a man who clearly isn’t used to people being genuinely nice to him and thanking him and probably hasn’t had anybody actually show any respect to him at all in hundreds of years (crew has to follow orders of the captain but to have someone like Emma say thank you?). To throw back up a wall and fall into a defensive pattern, aka his Hook mask of awkward flirting and such, THAT’S JUST THE WORST THING EVER? And with a woman who KNOWS what it’s like to throw walls up the moment things get too real? Seriously?
His awkward flirting or saying what he wants from her is not repulsive to everyone (I’m seriously tired of people telling me how offended I should be). It’s not as sweet and nice as we’ve seen Killian be as of late, but it’s not the worst thing ever either. He isn’t HURTING her. If she didn’t like it, this is Emma Swan – she’d say something and she’d stop it. These two THRIVE off of their banter. It unnerves them when a moment is genuine and real and might possibly mean something. That automatically throws walls back up and they have to go find a distraction and then slip back into what is comfortable for them.
Emma is seeing a different side of him this season and it’s confusing her because she expects the worst in him but is seeing the best and she’s still afraid to trust it but is slowly opening up to the fact that he really has been there for her. I need the context of the entire episode and to see what happens before and after – it looks like they might share another drink before having the talk that leads to the kiss. She was wiping her mouth and handed him back a container it looked like.
More food for thought? Many have speculated that this scene may be more near the end and long after the one where Charming tells Hook to stay away from Emma. For all we know, he’s trying to, or at least trying to look like he is so that he can continue winning Charming over. He knows that Emma’s priority is Henry right now and that she’s dealing with a lot of other stuff too so he may say something about it being Emma’s choice but he may not be too confrontational about it and probably hasn’t fully given himself reason to hope that she might return his feelings anyway – until after that incredible kiss which clearly rocks him to his core. So for all we know *right now* without episode context, he very well could be acting like that just to try to comply with Charming’s wishes. As in, he’s putting the Hook mask back on so that he doesn’t let himself get too close to her and he could even be trying to push her away a little by testing out what happens if he slips back into that, figuring she’ll walk away and all will be right again for Charming and his little girl, but BAM, she throws it back at it and lays one on him. So really, WHO KNOWS without the context.
There’s a reason that Emma and Killian are such kindred spirits and understand each other so well. She sees a side of him that nobody else sees because it is JUST AS PAINFUL for him to let people see it as it is for her. She is watching him be the man she thought was underneath it all along (she called him out on his tattoo on the beanstalk and came THIS close to trusting him but being afraid she would be wrong again). She’s seeing him do things FOR HER that he has no reason to do. He’s helping her father who doesn’t even like him most of the time and she mentions that too. That’s why it’s such a genuine “Thank you” from her which THROWS HIM OFF KILTER. So he slips back into what is comfortable. What he knows. Hmm, I wonder who that reminds me of. Couldn’t be Emma…*headdesk*
It’s so much easier to be awkward and flirty the way that Hook is when nobody takes you seriously because of the persona you are showing to people. You can say whatever you please and at best they just roll their eyes and walk away. The fact that Emma didn’t back down but DISHED IT RIGHT BACK AT HIM? He LOVES that. He probably figured he’d at least get one of her cute eye rolls and that would be that but instead he brought out her feistyness and sass to the point where she was teasing him as much as he was teasing her and she STILL had an opportunity to shut it down. He let her control ALL of it. He never reached for her until she was already kissing him. She could have even gotten right up close like she was going to kiss him and then pulled away just to shut him up. She didn’t. She went in for a huge, long, breath-stealing kiss that affected BOTH of them.
Yep, she must really hate him and everything he does even when he’s acting more like Hook with his silly flirting that she can’t REMOTELY see through even though she knows it’s a wall just like hers. She’s already outright told him that they understand each other. She GETS it. She has SEEN him be more Killian than Hook. *headdesk*

Excellent catch on that movie of the week! I bet that was around the time she was reading the script for this episode cause I think they filmed it shortly there-after.
If I could, you know, FUNCTION, after watching that clip a million times I’d try to put into words all of the positive things I’m feeling right now but I am at a complete & utter loss, and I’d rather enjoy the shaky goodness of that moment than deal with everything that is literally making my blood boil over how Emma is being interpreted as some manipulated little wallflower.
So instead, I will leave you with the perfect analysis of everything that was in that sneak peek because it was perfect and brief and gave me lots and lots of feels and now I really need to stop rewatching the clip and go watch that movie because just…FEELS and perfection.

Agree with everything that’s been said and still flailing!
If I see any more Hook hate for trying to leverage a kiss out of the deal I’m gonna scream. He was gauging Emma, probably hoping for no more than a peck, and she was still saying no and could have stood her ground. She didn’t move when he came in close. She told him “that’s what the thank you was for” and she could have walked away. He challenged her and she TEASED him right back with the “you wouldn’t be able to handle it” but at the end of the day SHE was the one that went in for the kiss and I’m sorry but that was NOT a “thank you” kiss, she went in for the kill!
She was in complete control there. She knows Hook “fancies her” and of course he’s gonna try and get a little kiss out of it but he lets her control the situation. It reminded me a lot of ITNOTB in the beginning. She had the power and he was back to being flirty which, guess what? SHE LIKES. This completely kills the idea that she hates everything he says because she went for it!
She could have walked away and rolled her eyes whenever she wanted to. She told him she thanked him and that would have been that. Of course he was gonna hope and try for a bit more but I think he was enjoying watching her smile and banter with him! We haven’t seen her smile in ages!
They were both CLEARLY affected by that. Hook has already admitted he fancies her so it’s not surprising that he started talking first and going back for seconds but her walls immediately went back up and I would expect nothing less. Her “one time thing” was about as convincing as his “just as I am done with you” and we know THAT’S not gonna last! She had to hold onto his jacket just to keep herself upright!
He did the lip touch thing! He’s so obviously moved by it and I expect we’ll see more that she is now that every interaction between them is post-kiss! And we know how Emma is with her walls – she’ll pretend it didn’t mean anything and then she’ll lash out at Tink for looking at him the wrong way or something lol. She didn’t have to go there, she could have offered a peck on the cheek or a hug or something if it was all out of gratitude. She outright told him, I’ve already thanked you. She could have walked away at that point and not felt remotely guilty so she did this because she wanted to.
The line. He used…the line! THE LINE! I’ve been waiting for that sine the Crocodile (I swear he sounded just like Westley/DPR in that episode!) Colin has always said there’s a little bit of that in Hook too! That line…is HUGE. It is ICONIC. It MEANS SOMETHING and she heard it and smiled/smirked. YOU KNOW SHE WAS THINKING IT and it made her HAPPY. She won’t be willing to go there for a long time, especially once Neal is back in the picture, and any talk of real feelings gets to her but in that moment, she reacted to him saying that and it MADE HER HAPPY. When she evaluates everything down the line, she’s gonna remember that. THAT QUOTE YOU DON’T JUST THROW AROUND PEOPLE.
So basically we haven’t JUST seen them compared to Snowing lately, but we’ve also had them referred to as Han and Leia, and now outright (even though we’ve been saying it before now) hints of Buttercup & Westley – which is what we’ve been saying for ages for Hook. And for this to be in HIS BACKSTORY episode where he might be a little bit more like Westley and a little less like DPR is HUGE. I really hope we get a reference to the boys being farmers or something before joining the navy cause that would be full circle perfectness for Westley and it would be another nod to Charming too).
This kiss was never going to be some big romantic gesture especially after last week. But the fact that they went out of their way to show it wasn’t just “you saved David! Let me kiss you & then say it meant nothing” is HUGE. She made a point of saying thank you already. It was done. A guy can ask for a kiss in return all he wants but it’s still her choice to give it. He was enjoying the banter and getting her to smile and then she shocked him and now they’re both affected by it from here on out no matter what BECAUSE IT HAPPENED.
I think he really did save Charming because he’s no longer serious and concerned but happy and celebrating. It would make sense if he was able to save Charming because it would be a huge victory for him personally after whatever happened with his brother Liam. It’s nice to see the mood lightened a bit and he’s making her SMILE!
I seriously need context for after that moment but they will never be the same because it happened and they can’t erase that. It’s the first time in centuries for Hook and the only one we’ve seen from him at all, and with Emma that is the most passionate we have ever seen her. We’ve seen cute before, we’ve seen her push Graham away for being too bold before, but this was all her. Before she even kissed him though? She told him he wouldn’t be able to handle it. She TEASED him with that. She challenged him to challenge her to do it because this is Emma Swan – she doesn’t just go around kissing people, especially ones she knows might have feelings for her. She’d just shut it down, roll her eyes, and walk away. She already thanked him. This was Emma bantering back and enjoying it, and it was beautiful.
I think someone said that was a full 13 second kiss. Nobody gets the epic kisses like that except for the TL couples. We’ve seen cute and sweet but this was Emma with full on passion and need for Hook and it wasn’t about saving her dad, or being emotionally unstable after last week’s episode. This was Emma, enjoying her time with Hook, that STARTED OFF as saying thank you but turned into full on banter which led to her grabbing him and going for the kill. I’m sorry but that was not a thank you kiss, or an I need to block out how I feel about other people kiss. That was I want this. She was ENJOYING herself for the first time in goodness knows how long and the rest of the world, for a few seconds, melted away and the same was true for him. They were wrapped up in each other for a few glorious seconds and then when he started to say how amazing it was her walls went back up. She was clutching him and hanging on for dear life until he started to talk and then she realized what she’d let herself do and put her guard back up. THIS IS HOW SHE IS WITH GUYS SHE LIKES. She gets scared and can’t admit she might feel something and goes to focus on something else.
It’ll be really interesting to see how they behave after this. Neither is going to be able to forget that or pretend it didn’t happen. We need more of Emma’s reaction but Hook’s said it all to me for him. Or should I say, Killian. Can’t wait til she can let herself let go of her walls and call him that but this is a step in the right direction. It may not have started out as a grand gesture of love but it is a step in the right direction to realizing that something is there for her. She just doesn’t want to admit that yet and has more important things to focus on. Can’t wait to see how they interact after this though! And who else notices / calls them out on it…certain things you just can’t recover from and hide and that was an AMAZING KISS.
I…need to go rewatch a gazillion times now because perfect clip is perfect and the start of something real and beautiful and we are not nor have we ever been delusional. We saw more there a long time ago and we have just as much of a chance as anybody! Though I do agree, not gonna lie, my hopes are super high after not only seeing how it went down and it being amazing and perfect, but using THAT quote, and seeing that after they’ve already been compared to Han and Leia. I just…you can’t throw things around like that! It’s just cruel and unusual punishment if it’s not real at that point! I know they’re not any of those couples, or Snowing, they have their own beautiful love story! But it’s completely unnecessary to bring those extra elements in, especially in THAT MOMENT, if the pull to him isn’t real and strong. Like obisgirl said, none of those couples including Snowing started off all lovey-dovey. It’s a journey, not a destination and I have faith we’ll get there in the end. Seriously the only way THAT MOMENT would have been any better just now is if she had called him a scoundrel, which she totally could have for asking for the kiss before laying it on him! Maybe she’ll think to use that word later though…*fingers crossed*

Emma said she still loved Neal all those years but that she has a lot of anger built up. She didn’t say she was IN love and she also is realizing how much time she wasted not trusting her instincts and letting someone in. She’ll be so confused and conflicted when Neal shows back up because, as JMO has said, she has a legitimate pull to both these guys and this kiss proves that because she didn’t dive into it when he asked for thanks, she told him that’s what the “thank you” was for. She didn’t feel compelled and overwhelmed with him saving her dad that she just had to kiss him and then pretend like it didn’t mean anything. There was flirting and banter involved and she challenged him just as much!

Some part of her wanted to know what that felt like and that was an amazing kiss and you don’t just forget that.

I wish he would stop responding to the hate but he did say earlier today that he sees a lot more love than hate so that’s good. I don’t know how he does it but it makes me crazy seeing what gets thrown at him! Especially when it’s just people assuming he must hate all the ships because theirs isn’t already 100% super happy. These are but small chapters in a large book. Have patience people and send him some love, not hate! *headdesk*

I just posted this elsewhere after giving myself massive feels but I wanted to share this here too.
In the pilot we see the two dolls on pedestals overlooking Emma’s crib in the nursery. A suit of armor (we’ve seen Charming wear one) and a pirate doll wearing a Captain’s hat. That doll has also been seen in a later episode standing next to a sheep (and David used to be a shepherd)
These things have been there from the pilot. Also in the pilot? Charming having to fight one-handed to save his baby girl at all costs. His left hand is literally of no use in the fight because he is holding Emma in his left arm. He has handicapped himself in order to get her to safety, charging clear across the castle to get her into the wardrobe.
Who else has to fight one-handed but will do whatever it takes to protect the people he loves and happens to care a lot about our blonde savior who was in the arms of her other protector the last time that HE had to fight one-handed? Why that would be Hook
I’ve been meaning to make a banner sig ever since I found out about the pirate doll and suit of armor but gave myself massive feels about the outfit when I saw the stills for 3×05 in which Colin is his usual adorkable self in the old time uniforms! It is *slightly different* the doll is wearing a blue jacket and red pants but I really love what young Killian Jones is wearing so I’ll let it slide. It’s still clearly wearing a captain’s hat and we know that Hook is an officer-turned-pirate captain so I’ll take it!
SO EXCITED for 3×05 and YAY for Hook and Emma being preliminarily nominated for a Peoples Choice Award. The site has been slow or crashing but don’t give up! Lots of OUAT nominations which is awesome!
Looks like there’s a Snowing kiss as well as a CaptainSwan one in 3×05 (yay parallels!) and in one of the stills while the Snowing kiss is taking place, Regina looks off in the distance with a look of shock on her face and Emma is coming back into frame while the Snowing kiss is happening like she may have just been off in the woods with a little “goodbye, good luck, come back safely” kiss of her own possibly? Still not sure WHERE in the episode this will happen but I did have to wonder at the look on Regina’s face and what she could possibly be seeing where Hook and Emma are off in that direction and Emma is coming back in to frame after that….
If it IS a seemingly a goodbye kiss, since Charming is afraid he might not make it back and is saying goodbye to Snow who doesn’t seem to know for sure what’s up yet, Emma could be having a moment with Hook going over the plan cause I don’t think the girls like the guys splitting off from them. It’s dangerous, tensions are already high. I could see the ADORABLE SMIRK on Hook’s face before the kiss being something along the lines of whether she’d be worried about him or miss him if something happened to him and this time she DOESN’T STAND ON CEREMONY (yay) and just kisses him and then in that beautiful moment after the kiss where they look like they’re clinging to each other and needing each other more than anything he says something about always coming back for her and then kissing her on the forehead like Charming does with Snow cause that would be so perfect! – I’m seriously dying to know what is said leading up to and following that kiss because FEELS but this is my current perfect-world headcanon based on the 3×05 stills!
And yes, I will take any Snowing/CaptainSwan parallels within the same episode as I can get! Also yay for bonding time for Captain Charming!
With regards to the Charming telling Hook to stay away from Emma scene. I really really hope that we get him saying it’s Emma’s choice and that there’s eventually a time when Emma finds out what was said – my preference would be for her to sit down with Charming sometime when she’s all confused because he’s been in that situation and I want her to tell him about the history with Neal and have him say something like “I told Hook the same thing but he didn’t listen” or “he said it was your choice to make, not his.” I want father/daughter bonding time (and looks like we at least get a hug this ep! With Snow watching and looking worried – think she’s starting to suspect Charming’s injury for sure.)

So excited this is finally out!
Interesting that it’s the brother but that could actually be really awesome because we’ll see the brothers on a mission and Captain Charming on a mission too (I really love their interaction, even though Hook wasn’t fairing too well last night without Charming’s help. Poor thing! He was trying so hard and Charming kept pushing him out of the way).
Hook knows what this plant looks like. He may never have found it or he did but not in NL and he truly believes Charming won’t make it out alive because it’s not here or he doesn’t believe it really exists (could have been a trick from Pan and we know his mindgames)…so who knows. He may not want to get Charming’s hopes up only to say guess it didn’t exist after all.
So they go on the mission to do something useful ie: read the map and they continue their conversations and bonding! We saw Hook tell Charming that while reality and hope are often in different worlds, the one thing he has learned from “you hero types” is that “there’s always hope” so I think while they’re off on this adventure when Charming is getting close to dying (which grr, nobody else knows about yet),when things get really really bad, just when they’re about to give up all realistic hope…Hook will spot the elusive flower he couldn’t find the first time and it will save him.
Charming’s not looking too good right now so not sure how much further they’ll stretch it but I could see them doing a callback to last night’s conversation right about the time that they find the flower that can help. Hook will probably gape at it and think he’s imagining things/wishful thinking and then Charming can do the callback to “There’s always hope” which USED to be kinda his thing every time Snow got down. It’s sad to watch him suffer like this! I’m all for Captain Charming bonding though. It’s hilarious & adorable.
I’m torn on this only because I agree I thought they were going to spread it out a bit more so it may not happen in this episode, they may only find the thing to read the map, but I do think that Hook will find the plant in NL and it will surprise him but save the day.
It WAS curious how Hook knew to go to NL for time to stop so he’d have enough time to plot his revenge. I thought that was weird as well so figured he went there as a boy but he may have heard of it from PP or he & his brother may have had to go there to look for the plant or something. Either way I don’t think it looks good for Liam and maybe Hook thinks it was all a trick and that the flower doesn’t exist if he never found it. I agree that he may be more worried about Charming because he’s watched it happen before.
If he gave up hope thinking the plant existed, even within NL, not finding it after all this time, never randomly coming across it, and certainly not finding it in time to save his brother, all he knows is what happened to the last guy and he’s sympathetic to him. He doesn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up like his were though if he never found it and Charming probably wouldn’t agree to a jungle search for a plant when they need to go get Henry anyway. I fully expect them to come across it when everything looks bleak and it’ll be a good have a little faith moment with the “there’s always hope” stuff.
So many things with this episode I didn’t even think to expect! Flying ships, Killian’s brother (man we were way off – wonder how young we’ll actually see Killian here since it doesn’t look like we’ll get his childhood or family much except for Liam. Perhaps that’ll be another time, like with Emma where we haven’t seen her time in the foster system, just as a baby through the wardrobe and then at 17 meeting Neal), and Peter Pan having history with him all the way back then. I think it’s safe to say that Liam will be in big trouble and that PP got to Killian and shaped his life too though. Was not expecting him to pop up in that timeline but it shouldn’t have been that surprising I guess.
Also uh, uniform, ponytail,and Captain Charming side adventure! All very good and yay for knowing of existence of a plant that can save Charming. Hopefully that will calm some fears. They wouldn’t show it to us for no reason.
Pan said that everyone is exactly where he wanted them and now we know he had something to do with Hook’s life as well and that caused Hook to be where he is today. Makes sense, everything right now seems to go back to him including every person who should have been dead centuries ago. Still, wonder what he has in mind for them if they’re all exactly where he wants them. WHAT ARE YOU UP TO PETER??
It says they’re in FTL but I wonder which realm and which king they serve and how Devin fits into everything. Interesting! Can’t wait!

Just wanted to leave this here. Just finished reading an excellent analysis (link to follow) and it had some great points I hadn’t even considered with regards to Emma and how she’s feeling about everything!
We’ve seen from the beginning of the show that she has struggled with being a mother and the fear that she won’t be a good one but she’s in this and keeps trying and is doing whatever it takes to save her son.
We started off the season with a flashback showing her having Henry and not even being able to hold him (and JMO has pretty much said that if she had, she wouldn’t have been able to let him go). That is pains her THAT much. Because she knows what it’s like to feel abandoned. It doesn’t matter that her parents did that to her, she still did that to Henry and she knows what that feels like, even if done for the best reasons.
Henry equated her giving him up to Snowing giving her up: that it was to give them their best chance, but that doesn’t wipe out the inevitable pain of abandonment as a child that we’re seeing from Emma and now Henry since he can hear the music.
Not being a mother myself, I hadn’t even paid attention to the fact that Emma has other reasons to move forward and move on with Captain Hook instead of going back to Neal (or rather, more obstacles that I think would be hard to get through, even with lingering feelings).
This season they are falling heavily onto the point that Emma is a MOTHER. It is what her special skill she brings to the group was in her speech. It’s in her list of titles. It’s what is eating her alive right now trying to get to Henry and to save him before it’s too late. Anybody who isn’t willing to help her needs to get out of the way because she is a MOTHER and she wants her kid.
This meta gave me a ton of feelings for Emma. I relate to her on a lot of levels (though no massive betrayals, abandonment, jail or being a mother issues to speak of) but hadn’t thought about the fact that not only did the choices Neal make for her cost her 10 years of feeling unloved on top of a lifetime of abandonment, but also COST HER 10 YEARS WITH HER KID. Something that, while upsetting enough, could make it “too late” for Henry in PP’s clutches.
Not to mention the fact that her son was raised by the Evil Queen and spent his life being lied to and told he was crazy and seeing a shrink and running off to Boston to find Emma to get SOMEBODY to believe in him and fix everything that was wrong with his world because he knew this wasn’t right.
Emma and Neal would have kept him – no doubt. We wouldn’t have a story and Emma wouldn’t have broken the curse but there are a lot of coulda, would, shouldas in this story. If goodness knows what didn’t happen to goodness knows who causing magic to die and getting PP to manipulate things so that Neal would someday meet Emma and have Henry and he’d have to grow up the way he did so that he would become the truest believer that could save magic.
Things sometimes happen with the best of intentions and even with *some* answers we already know that Emma is VERY ANGRY about not getting to address a lot of things with Neal and on the surface, right now we’re hearing about how hurt she was by not being able to tell him just how angry she was at him for letting her go all that time and not telling her. That he BROKE her and then over a decade came back and said he loved her all along – that’s MASSIVELY PAINFUL and CONFUSING when she’s just lost him for the 2nd time *technically* and never got closure over the first which is what screwed her up to begin with.
She had a tiny bit of closure when she thought he was dying and it is always easier to idealize things from a long time ago because over time, unless it’s traumatic, you block out things and think of it the way you want to remember it. Likewise if it’s massively traumatic, you can only remember the bad.
Right now Emma is CONFUSED all around but ESPECIALLY because she thinks he’s dead because while she is VERY ANGRY, the good stuff is brought back by thinking he’s not only gone but dead as well. Seeing him could be a whole nother story depending on exactly what she’s upset about and how much of it she’s having to relearn since her whole life has basically been one giant manipulated lie on top of another. There’s always been somebody choosing things for her and those choices, all of them, have left her a broken woman who is afraid to let herself love because people always leave her. The only two who have ever come back FOR HER are Henry and Hook (and she had already abandoned both of them before that!)
The ONLY reason that Neal came with them to SB is because his father was dying and as angry as he was, he still loved him even though he obviously does not and may never fully trust him again but will love him all the same. He didn’t come back for Emma. He didn’t offer to follow her back even knowing his son was there. He even whined that he hadn’t had enough time with him when Emma mentioned that they needed to go home. Neal never intended to do any of that. He was going to stay in NY where his life made sense and was far away from magic (not that I can blame him after his rotten life) but this all comes back to the one thing we haven’t been talking about that he took away from her that I think will weigh on her mind more prevalently after having to fight SO HARD to get her son back: Henry’s childhood.
It’s been glossed over a little here and there, but I think Emma will be battling a lot sometime soon that she missed so much and that’s going to have an affect on her. Especially if it comes up in a conversation with Neal once he rejoins the group eventually. With everything that is happening in Neverland right now, she is going to be ESPECIALLY raw and emotional and hopefully very blunt and letting things off her chest so that she’s not so bottled up anymore.
This will help her understand Snowing a LOT better which is something they need to work on. She & Neal have had skimming-the-surface conversations where Emma has warned him not to hurt Henry like he hurt her, but they haven’t shown us any other conversations with regards to how Henry was raised or how he ended up in SB with Regina or anything of that. We really have no clue what Neal even knows about any of it. But that HAS to weigh on her at some point, especially in a season where she is fully embracing her role as a mother and fighting so hard for her son.

Yes, perfect parallel is perfect! I totally forgot about that one when I mentioned the thing about somebody telling a guy to stay away from Emma and how we’re pretty much guaranteed that Hook will NOT do this. Perfect OTP is perfect (as well as 100% canon!
