ParticipantI don’t know that you can have a show about fairy tales and not have it focus heavily on romantic relationships – that’s what so many are about…so the ‘ships never bothered me on OUAT. I like that each one is distinct in it’s own way – Snowing is that classic ‘fairy tale’ couple, Rumbelle is the ‘against all odds’ fairy tale, OutlawQueen is about second chances, and CS about finding love again after a very intense, first true love.
Even so, OUAT is centered around Emma and Regina’s love for their son. And as others stated, other major relationships on the show have not been romantic – Rumple’s love for his son is one of the most compelling storylines on the show, in my opinion. Emma has to learn how to love her parents after a very difficult childhood – and so on.
In regard to general opinion, OUAT has a number of ‘ships, yes, but it also has a huge cast. There’s going to be a lot of ‘ships simply for that reason. But I don’t think OUAT is anything like a soap – daytime or primetime – OUAT is about true, pure love, in whatever form that may be. No one’s bed hopping. Maybe 4 have even romantically loved more than one person – and they loved 2 at most. I think most shows that have a number of ‘ships – or potential ships – have equally passionate fans. I’m not particularly concerned with the amount of ‘ships OUAT has, because I enjoy them and think they each bring something unique to the table.
Beautifully stated Jenna and bed hopping is totally a staple of American soaps. And that’s what separates Once from American soaps. The characters we love on Once tend to be in exclusive relationships.
The only time we had affairs was in season one when everyone was cursed (Mary Margaret and David, Mary Margaret and Dr. Whale).

ParticipantNew CS article today, but it’s mostly an old soundbite from an interview Jen did awhile back.

ParticipantI watch soap operas, Crystal and I can tell you, Once Upon a Time is no where close to the relationship drama with often times very bad writing that I get when my mom watches them. You watch a soap, there’s not just love triangles, there’s quadrangles, and polyangels and whatever.
I don’t think of Once as a ‘shippy drama. I consider it as a story about relationships, (family and romantic), hope and second chances. I didn’t ‘ship heavily until Skin Deep for obvious reasons. All these characters are on a journey towards their happy ending, which we’ve seen doesn’t always mean it is a romantic happy ending. Jefferson’s happy ending was reuniting with his daughter Grace and the woodsman with his kids, Hansel and Gretel.
Plus, I do not think you can have a show nowadays without even touching on the romantic part of ‘shipping. It’s present on every show you watch. It just so happens that this show focuses on four major couples: Snowing because Snow White and Prince Charming were ground zero, it’s where we started, Emma because she’s their daughter, Regina because she’s the Evil Queen and Rumple because he’s been around the longest. But remember, before we even knew about Rumbelle Rumple’s first and most important relationship was with his son, Baelfire.
We are Once Upon a Ship. Doesn’t matter what ships…we are Once Upon a Ship.
@Obisgirl can tell us how many we have now. I think we’re into the 140s?
And like I said, and I’ve seen other people say, ‘shipping a fandom thing. But Adam and Eddie write a story.

ParticipantI’ve always said that Eddy and Adam shouldn’t have to NEED a podcast to explain their show. That’s lazy writing if you need clarification outside the source material. We might like additional information but we shouldn’t need it.
There was a podcast for season two but the host found a new gig and the podcast was cancelled. It would be nice to have an official podcast again. I couldn’t stand the official one much but if it’s good, I’d give it a listen.

ParticipantI’ve found with Once there’s no singular theme when it comes to seasons. Hope has been a major theme since season one so it would be nice to have eleven episodes dedicated to it.
obisgirl
ParticipantI’m going to expand on that idea and add, maybe a more appropriate general theme of season four will be family.
I think family, what is family will be the theme. Emma’s a big sister now and Robin Hood needs to figure out what he wants his family to look like and what works for him. If Zelena comes back, I’d like to see her and Regina get that second chance.

ParticipantI agree with most of what you wrote @WickedRegal

Participant1) Favorite Episode? Snow Drifts/There’s No Place Like Home. Every time I go back and write a meta about the finale, there’s something new to love about it. It makes sense now why these two episodes were shown on the same night, it would have been really disjointing to watch There’s No Place Like Home a week later. Everything flows together perfectly.
2) Least Favorite Episode? The Tower. There’s been a lot of Snowing backstory episodes but Charming’s had very few episodes devoted to his character. It was nice seeing him face his fears about having another baby, and if he would be a good father. I also have a sneaking feeling it was cathartic for Josh since he’s going to be a father soon himself. I liked seeing a different Rapunzel. I didn’t mind that at all but the story was kinda weak.
3) What did you think of Zelena as a character/villain? Zelena was an interesting villain. With all the villains we’ve had so far on OUAT, there’s always been something a little sympathetic about them. They’re never black and white – evil just for the sake of being evil villains. I liked that Adam and Eddie’s interpretation of the Wicked Witch stayed true to that. I liked how they held onto her name for the longest time and once that came out, knowing that it means “light” — which is actually similar to what my real name means, it was a curious choice. But it makes sense now. I would have liked to see Zelena actually have a real second chance, trying to learn to be good again and have a real sisterly friendship with Regina.
4) Favorite moment? I have to pick only one? Really? Okay, okay, the Captain Swan kiss in front of Granny’s diner. I cannot get enough of that kiss, I try to reblog a gif set whenever I come across one I like on tumblr, and analyzing what’s beautiful about it and how it stacks up to previous CS kisses. Moment #2 would go to Past Hook vs. Present Hook. I laughed out loud so hard after I first watched the finale and still laugh when I re-watch.
5) Overall rating for the season? A

Rumple never promised Belle he wouldn’t kill Zelena.Does Rumple have to make promises every time a new big bad comes to town? She trust him to be a better man. She believes that he has turned a corner and he’s fighting the darkness. And he betrayed that.
I agree.
Does Rumbelle really need a second true love’s kiss? They already had one and I have no doubt that Belle and Rumple love each other. I don’t doubt that at all, but I guess since Rumple was forced to choose between keeping his dagger and saving his son son, he chose his son and gave up his dagger. Maybe Rumple will be faced with a similar choice when it comes to Belle. Give up his magic, let her true love kiss him and he’s not the Dark One anymore. It’ll be interesting to see how that works in Storybrooke.

ParticipantOh, and I’d also like to add that we don’t know what EXACTLY is going on in Rumple’s head. While killing Zelena was in character, him lying to Belle like this and kinda using her as an alibi is not. I’m a bit confused about this, I feel like something is off with him. Perhaps part of his father was resurrected within him, or something dramatic (other than being imprisoned and having his son within him) happened to him during that missing year..
Now that you bring it up, I’d like to know what was Rumple’s rational for lying to Belle. Why did he feel the need to create a fake dagger and give Belle a false sense of security and trust?
As to Rumple’s reaction to Neal’s death, I don’t think he was possessed. But his reaction was different from season two. In season two, he was a lot more accepting of Neal’s death but again, season two was a fake death since we learned that Neal survived falling through the bean hole.
Rumple’s was different because this was not a fake death like before. It’s real and Zelena was indirectly responsible and taunted him a lot after his passing. He didn’t even have a chance to be at his sons’ funeral because he was locked in a cage. Of course Rumple was going to lash out- that part was expected but it’s the lying bit that’s still confusing.
