ParticipantI feel like, if we re-watched Tallahassee now, after seeing all this wonderful development between Captain Swan and then compare why Emma is the way she is and why her and Neal fell apart, Captain Swan make more sense now as True Loves.
It goes back to that idea, that there’s a true love for you at every stage of your life. Emma now is not the same Emma she was then in Tallahassee, in the flashbacks. Emma then was hopeful for a home and love but more importantly, a home. She strongly believed in the dream for Tallahassee as their home (it seriously could have been anywhere as long as her and Neal were together). And then Neal left her and Emma ended up in jail and she became the pessimistic Emma we saw in the pilot.
Emma now, is still a bit jaded but she also knows that there a lot of people who love her. And a part of still believes in that dream for Tallahassee but thinks its’ still out of reach because of who she is, the savior and product of true love. But Emma is taking baby steps towards accepting love in her life. She trusts Hook look after Henry and also trusts him to tell her the truth, even when it’s not what she wants to hear. One day soon maybe even next episode Emma is going to steadily let love back into her life because she, like her mom, value action more than words.
It’s going to mean something to her once she finds out what Hook was up to in the lost year without her. It’s going to make seeing him again in The New York Serenade, more meaningful because he didn’t just come back so she could help save her family, but he came back for HER! And he’s the only man who’s done that. Hook’s actions will be incredibly meaningful to Emma once it comes out, just like how JMo expressed how meaningful it was that Hook genuinely wanted to help in 3A.
The writing of this ‘ship, really when you think about, in relation to SwanFire, it’s perfect because we understand where the failures were and what Emma needs now from her true love.

ParticipantPoM~ I embrace your vent wholeheartedly! No Hope and lives destined for misery IS a depressing message. But it is not the message of OUAT. It is the message that some of the viewers choose to create because, in essence, the story tellers did not tell the story they wanted to see. It is their message. They are more than entitled to it. For whatever their reason. They must own it. The rest can just sidestep and follow a different path. Any one of us could lose a beloved character at the whim of *the story.* It is not our story to tell. Hope though, is not lost. Not with these creators! and rumplegoldfan~ your comment about “EF version of tavern alley phone sex” had me, truly, laughing out loud! Thanks for the moment
And again, if Oncers are so incredibly unhappy with the show right now, then please, stop watching. No one forces you to watch something you’re not happy with. Take a break from the show if you need too. Being miserable and spreading hate isn’t going to make anyone feel better, only make the situation worse.
I wrote a post about this. I feel part of the problem with Neal’s death for SwanFire and Neal fans, is that they never fully prepared themselves for the possibility that the death would be him.

ParticipantWonderful post, @priceofmagic
The show doesn’t revolve around Neal.
Yes! That’s what I’ve been saying, just because Neal died, doesn’t mean the story is done. There’s still loads of more story to tell.
To me, SwanFire were a “real” fairytale. They weren’t about slaying dragons, rescuing princesses, or going on quests. They were about 2 people in the real world, finding each other despite the odds and loving each other. They’ve had to go through crap, childhood abandonment, breaking up, separated parents to Henry. Whilst Snowing and RumBelle deal with the more fantastical issues, curses, witches, etc, SwanFire always dealt with the more “real world” issues.
Yes, I agree with this too. Like how many times was it stressed in interviews from 3A about Emma’s issue with Neal, him leaving her? That’s a real world issue. We know why Neal left her, but keep in mind, Emma had no idea what was the real reason at the time. For all she knew, Neal skipped out on her and went to Canada.
Once is still about hope and happy endings, not in the idealized terms that everyone gets a happy ending, but in the real terms that despite all the tragedy and heartbreak that befalls these characters, they can still pull through, it does get better for them, they can move on without forgetting what they lost.
Yes.

ParticipantI agree.
I’m seeing in the chat how fans would like to see Hook be less resistant to the wench’s charms and there’s probably a bit of dialogue that’s missing from that sneak peek because there was a ‘quick’ cut’ that happened. But usually when there is a ‘quick cut’ in a sneak peek, it’s something very spoilerly. I’m not saying it involves the wench, but I think it involves Emma. Maybe Hook says that there’s a lass for him out there who he believes is his true love and even if he can’t be with her, he’s going to stay loyal to her memory. Because that’s just who he is.

Participantmy thoughts on the latest sneak peek:
If Hook had gone and spent the night with the wench, it would have been totally out of character for him at this point. It’s been stated since ‘Good Form’ that he is a man of honor, he’ll “win [her] heart, … it will not be because of any trickery.” ; he gave Henry’s parents a fair shot in The New Neverland, so seeing him turn down the wench in The Jolly Roger, falls in line perfectly with his “man of honor” good form code.

But Killian Jones isn’t the ladies man pirate anymore. He’s done with that life. So I totally agree with an earlier post, he really isn’t a pirate anymore. His ship was stolen, taken and make a bet, once he gets his ship back, he’s going to realize that his ship isn’t his home anymore, but Emma is.

ParticipantWe got a new sneak peek for 3×17!!!
I haven’t watched it but from what I understand, Hook turns down the bar maid. No need to worry guys. He is 100% devoted to our girl, Emma.

ParticipantCould be.

ParticipantI really hope when Emma finally tells Hook that she loves him, it isn’t under a moment of duress. I really want it to happen naturally without anything traumatic going on.
Also, I don’t want her to say, ‘I love you Hook’ I hope she says, ‘I love you Killian.’

ParticipantI get you, Sarah.
Like I said before, I do think Emma is starting to trust him. She trusts that he can look after Henry and Henry doesn’t mind Hook’s company. The thing Emma still doesn’t trust, is her heart because like what Sarah said, she’s still scared of what would happen if she opens up to Hook and he breaks her heart.
Actually, one of my first thoughts about ‘A Curious Thing’ is that, maybe this refers to ‘love being a curious thing’ which is the actual title of a song.
I do think, Emma will be moved by Hook’s actions and what he went through in the year without her. I can’t imagine why she wouldn’t.
