ParticipantFrom ABC’s Once twitter account:
Happy Valentine's Day! #CaptainSwan pic.twitter.com/qbb6pJTKd1
— Once Upon A Time (@OnceABC) February 14, 2015
So I wrote two CS related metas today for Valentine’s Day. The first one is devoted to Emma + Love and the second one, for Killian + Love.
I’ll try and write a third tonight, about Captain Swan + Love.
Edit: Captain Swan + Love Meta. It is a long one. Just be aware of that.

ParticipantI wouldn’t want Belle to be in an unhealthy relationship either, which if she did take him back, that’s ultimately how Rumbelle would be viewed as going forward. I don’t there’s any way for me to erase that taint to their relationship.
I do, however think it’s possible for Belle to be happy without Rumple. I think she can stand on her own two feet if she really wanted and if truly given the chance to. Who is Belle without Rumple? I really want to know.
Not everyone in the world wants to be in a relationship. Being in a relationship isn’t for everyone. Sometimes a person is happier being on their own.

ParticipantThe only character we’ve seen who was evil for the sake of being evil was Pan. He was selfish and evil to the core. No true remorse either for what he was doing.

ParticipantI loved, loved what RG said here.
But with Once, I don’t see that happening. I am all for redemption and I DO believe a person can change, and like Keb said, there is a good man within rumple beneath all his crap, but for how long can Rumpel play this game before one gets tired of it.
Well 1) I believe in all that too, but that does not mean that Belle *has* to go back to him just because he redeemed himself or something. Forgiveness =/ = forgetting. And even thought they love each other deeply, Rumple did some horrible horrible horrible things.
2) Yes I know there is a good man within Rumple. Guys, it’s me. I was co-captain of the Rumple defense squad, three years running here. I know what kind of man he is. But he’s also a man who was given a second chance, saw the price of magic as he watched his son die on the cold hard ground, and then decided to go super duper evil but never once invokes his son’s name and memory and the pain of losing him as a reason why.
Everyone seems to be taking away Belle’s agency here. It’s all “so long as Rumple proves he has really changed, she’ll take him back.” Look, I don’t doubt for a second that A and E will put them back together. They aren’t exactly concerned with morality or sending a positive message to their young female viewers who are getting about 10000000 confusing messages about romantic true love from A and E. But that doesn’t mean that it’s a good story. He *murdered* people. Without remorse. After being given a second chance. This show has never strictly been just a fairy tale. It’s about how those fairy tales operate in our world. And I’m sorry but if the message is “this is your fairy tale!” then what the *hell* kind of philosophy is that for the millions upon millions of women who are trapped in the same kind of hell…”buck up ladies. this is your fairy tale.” It’s not just a show…it’s our culture. And it should reflect the kind of morals and ethics and judgements we would want upheld in the real world. Why? Because if you want to change the way society operates, then start changing the culture and the way we digest it.
But none of this matters. I *want* Rumple to live. I want him to find inner peace. But I think Belle taking him back because “it’s true love” is a horrifying message to send

ParticipantConsidering the show returns March 1st and this ‘special’ premieres an hour before the episode, I’d say this our recap special. Not the name I expected it to be called though.

ParticipantDay 14- Least Favourite Canon Ship (In-show Past or Present) – SwanFire.
2nd choice: Outlaw Queen. OQ had so much potential to start and then Adam and Eddy threw the twist of Marian, and even the love triangle potential was squandered. Instead, it was used for Regina’s character development and Marian was reduced to a frozen plot device. (I think there were better ways to show Regina changed then make Marian into a popsicle). Not to mention that Robin went back on his code. Aside from pixie dust, Adam and Eddy never really explained why Regina and Robin are perfect for each other.
And Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

ParticipantPersonally, I think it’s going to take more than Rumple’s word to Belle that isn’t going to kill anyone for her to take him back. This is Rumple we’re talking about. He promised Belle in Broke (2×01), he wouldn’t kill Regina and found a way around that. He basically did the same thing with Zelena. He’s the master of finding loopholes for stuff.
I don’t know how you can forgive murder and using someone as an alibi for murder. Because that’s what he did with Belle. And he kept on lying to her. If I were Belle, don’t take him back. RG was right in the Rumbelle thread that it would set a very, very bad example if Belle took him back. Because she’s continuing to enable his bad behavior.

ParticipantSo the latest Rumbelle teaser today made me wonder, should Belle forgive Rumple? What are everyone’s thoughts on this? Myself, I think Belle’s forgiveness should be hard-fought. It’s not just her forgiveness, her trust in Rumple is broken as well and it’s difficult to maintain a relationship (any kind of relationship) without trust. Other question, is Rumple deserving of Belle’s forgiveness?
Answer to both questions: no More complicated answer: It would be a bold decision on the part of A and E to show that sometimes “true love” is not enough. That true love is not some magical cure all against law, justice, common sense, and morality. I know it’s a show but the onus should be on ONCE to try and show that, indeed, there are some things you cannot come back from. Rumple broke her heart, broke her trust, and *hurt* other people with no consideration to anyone but himself. I don’t care that it’s “a fairy tale” putting them back together after all that leaves a rancid taste in mouth when millions of women are trapped in abusive and troubling relationships and feel like they can’t get out. A and E should really try to be “bold” and say that no–you have a choice. You can choose to not go back. You can choose to understand that love does not save the freaking day.
I really, truly hope that this is the case for Belle and Rumple. At this point, I don’t think Rumple is deserving of a happy ending at all.
I also would like to see Belle stand on her own as well. I think Belle can be a powerful and strong character on her own, given the opportunity. Plus, I think it would send a strong message if she doesn’t go back to Rumple at all. I think if she does go back to him, it negates what she did at the town line and then, she really is a doormat for Rumple. That he can get away with anything and she’d take him back. For whatever.
Personally, I think the only acceptable way she should forgive him is if he willingly gives up his curse. No cleaving, no holding onto his DO powers. Flat out curse removal…mortal, ordinary man. I have a feeling his opal ring is tied to the reason TLK doesn’t work with them, but what do I know. (And TLK does work in Storybrooke because Snow kissed Charming awake in Season 2).
This is nice in theory but power is Rumple’s true love. I think it’ll be very difficult for him to let go of that altogether. I think he still thinks that he can still have it all and that’s what the quest for the author will be about for him. He wants Belle and he still wants the power and thinks he can have both. He’s still making the same mistakes and hasn’t learned anything.
