They hated Gold for greedily overcharging their rent and controlling basically everyone’s buildings or businesses. I think they knew they’d either be out on the streets or he might arrange “accidental fires” if they didn’t pay up. Without knowing his fairy tale identity, they still feared him more than Regina.
When they find out he’s Rumpelstiltskin, what Charming called “the most dangerous man in the realms” and a “scourge” on the kingdoms (keep in mind the sword fight in the infinite forest with Rumpel being a fan of true love, precedes the wedding, and Charming personally helping arrange for the guy to be locked up), they should probably hate him even more.
I could see Belle being a go-between but I don’t think that would do her any favors or help her to fit in. The more I think about her doing that the more I think of her as a Sidney Glass. He was madly in love Regina, would do anything for her and at times did try to tell people that she wasn’t that bad. The guy didn’t seem to have many friends. They just tolerated him to keep off Regina’s bad side and otherwise felt sorry for him. Once Emma finally knew how bad Regina was, Sidney Glass’s love for her downright disgusted Emma.
If people know she’s aligned with Rumpel, I see Belle with a lot more pity than friendship.
[adrotate group="5"]AliasscapeParticipantI believe Emma’s (and by default’s Snow and Charming’s reaction) is dependent upon how she deals with Rumpel tricking her into almost getting herself killed by a dragon for magic that he ran away with, thus leaving her in the lurch and leaving her son to die. I really don’t want that all glossed over. So I think Emma more than most of the rest of the town has reason to dislike anyone who associates with Rumpel.
I’d think most would figure Belle, poor girl’s been locked up for 28 years doesn’t know what kind of a man she loves at all and try to help her see the light. It sounds like it’d then be more likely that Belle would reject them trying to “help” and cling to Rumpel. (Even though I’d much prefer the opposite.)
If everyone figures out Rumpel created the curse, and if magic immediately starts wreaking havoc and they figure out he did that too (I mean Rumpel probably just gave power back to Emma, Snow and Charming’s worst enemy), then even more reason for Rumpel and Belle to be outcasts.
That’s truer to the story of Beauty and the Beast anyway, even though the Beast had done far less to anyone than Rumpel has.
AliasscapeParticipantBasically it’s either Scifi or Spies/Detectives.
Fringe
CW’s Nikita
Continuum
Touch
Covert Affairs
Burn Notice
Person of Interestoff air:
Alias
The Pretender
Veronica MarsAliasscapeParticipantI feel like the show operated on this “First I’m so happy to see you alive and well and remember who I am again!” type reunions for everyone. After the initial euphoria or honeymoon period of “wow, we’re together” wears off, then they have to actually live with each other again and talk and have a marriage (and parenthood, and grand-parenthood).
While I agree there’s sure to be conflict between them and Emma certainly, doesn’t mean they won’t also disagree on the best way to approach things with Emma. You know, new parents sometimes have to figure out things like division of labor, or discipline, how to work together and be on the same page, present a united front to their kid. Obviously, they skipped all that childhood stuff, but I find myself still imagining them both wanting so badly to have a good relationship with Emma that if something one of them does seems to strain that relationship or cause Emma to pull away that in turn, straining things between them.
I don’t see them breaking up at all, but I’m excited at the prospect of them having more varied dialogue this coming season, that isn’t all “I found you!” all the time.

Ha. People are so weird. Why would anyone Photoshop someone elses head on a picture?
My best guess is there were rumors about them together for MONTHS before there were any pictures so someone thought they’d create one I guess. I guess Jennifer kept going to PA to see Sebastian.
I get that concern Antbee. I’ve watched shows before where the leads dated (and then broke up) before the show was over and it can wreck their chemistry or at least the audience view of the chemistry. Sometimes it seems like people just date their on set costars because it’s convenient when they work all day together anyway. I was slightly impressed that Ginny and Josh basically managed to be joined at the hip almost the entire hiatus, NY, LA, Kentucky and wherever else.
AliasscapeParticipantThat photo is actually photoshopped from a pic of him with Leighton Meester, but there are real ones here: http://www.justjared.com/2012/07/10/jennifer-morrison-sebastian-stan-union-square-stroll/
AliasscapeParticipantI think this makes it almost rock solid that the premiere will be September 30th. The first Sunday of the network broadcast season.
AliasscapeParticipantMaybe lack of focus is what the curse gave him so he used to be a guy who kept his eyes on what was in front of him and never got distracted.

Just because Belle didn’t react in a way in which you found fit, doesn’t mean that she’s been brainwashed or conditioned.
Can you point exactly where I said that?
In order for me to believe that Belle’s happy reaction was a result of conditioning (which I didn’t say), wouldn’t that require belief that Regina would have brainwashed Belle to like Rumpel more?
Edit: In any case, my point was a fearful reaction would have been a type of evidence of overt conditioning. That was what I said. “since Belle didn’t take one look at Rumpel in the finale, recoil in fear and run away, so she hadn’t be conditioned to fear him on sight.”
I meant “been” rather than be but it was a matter of fact statement that Belle reacting in over- the-top-hysterical fear at the sight of him wouldn’thave been a normal reaction.

I do believe really the only way for Regina’s imprisonment of Belle to not really just be a holding pattern for her storyline would be for Regina to have spent that time brainwashing her. But it’d have to be subconscious, sleeper type, since Belle didn’t take one look at Rumpel in the finale, recoil in fear and run away, so she hadn’t be conditioned to fear him on sight.
Just because Belle didn’t react in a way in which you found fit, doesn’t mean that she’s been brainwashed or conditioned. I wasn’t surprised by Belle’s reaction to the Rumpel in the finale. I saw that storyline for what it was. The show has presented them as true love. We have evidence of this via their kiss in “Skin Deep.” I knew that was the case, so I knew she wouldn’t fear when she was finally reunited with him. I honestly believe we’re overanalyzing something that will never be addressed on the show.
This whole debate is just a symptom of the original tale.
What in the world are you talking about? Why would Regina condition Belle to like Rumpel more? That’s ridiculous. 😆 And that’s not what I said.
I was saying we KNOW Regina didn’t manage to psychologically condition Belle to turn on Rumpel in any CONSCIOUS way since that’s not what she did. So anything Regina managed to do to turn Belle AGAINST Rumpel was more subtle if she did anything. I’m talking about a THEORY of long term planning on Regina’s part to turn Belle against Rumpel, rather than overt brainwashing to hate him on sight.
Edit: For the record in fiction, a sleeper agent is unaware of any conditioning and acts perfectly normal until activated, then they act against the enemy target, then have no recollection of what they did while activated. This form of subtle mental programming would have no effect on Belle and Rumpel’s reunion, not changing her reaction to him in any way. I was saying this now seems the only type of feasible programming on Regina’s part that would still in theory be possible.
