Am I the only one who felt like the whole “Rumple denied Milah the right to more children” was some straw man culpability they’re shoving onto him? It would have worked better if you got even the slightest indication she wants more kids or likes the one she has–but considering the alternative was him murdering someone, I don’t really see why we’re supposed to feel bad for Milah for THAT. Is the show trying to justify her cheating on him? There’s just no way to make the extremeness of her position (hating Spinner Rumps to the point of skipping out on him and her son without even a goodbye) narratively tenable.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantI don’t think you’re nuts. They showed that for a reason, you’re right. But I don’t think Pan has really learned his lesson in the Underworld; he still seems to be the same cruel and malicious guy he was when he was alive and terrorizing our heroes. I’m guessing he’s not exactly on the level with dear ol’ sonny boy.
Yeah, I’m feeling like this is going to be Gold’s version of that arc in S2 where Regina teamed up with Cora because she was desperate and had no one else to turn to. If Gold tells the heroes ANYTHING about what’s going on with him, he loses the tiny bit of credibility he had, so he really has no one else to turn to.
It’s funny, because it seems like Robbie Kay sort of wishes the character had evolved, but for whatever reason they (TPTB) don’t want to make him anything but terrible, lol.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantThis is not a happy storyline for me, I won’t lie. Yes, it re-centers Rumple’s story back on the idea of him being a father who would do anything for his child, but this is soooooo squicky. This baby was conceived through wonky-consent (Belle, not knowing that Rumple was the Dark One again and is still lying to her) and now it looks like Belle’s first born child is being threatened by Hades, which is rather unfair to both mother and child. To say nothing of the fact that it reeks of Nealfire not being enough to make his father go good, but this new baby, is.
To play Devil’s advocate, Rumple dying for Neal and Belle at the end of 3A and then him reabsorbing him to try to save his life when he was resurrected is, from my perspective, the closest to “good” we’ve seen him on the show post DO-curse yet. So I don’t think him potentially going good again because of Rumbelle baby is screwing the legacy over in that respect.
I’m guessing there’s going to be some twist with him having a “good” reason to take the curse back on. Eddy and Adam seem to be playing it that way, though they could just be happy about it because he can’t really narratively function in the story without his powers.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantWow, that episode. On the one hand, tons of retconning (trying to make Hook look better in the flashback, ugh) and OOC-ness (having Milah and Gold sort of resolve things and then him ‘kill’ her AGAIN, the whole sketchy second born deal which may or may not be incredibly OOC for Spinner Rumple, YMMV), on the other hand…they essentially rebooted Rumplestiltskin’s character arc to be once again about making terrible decisions related to a child, and there is a tiny, TINY part of me that can kind of respect that. I feel like it’s Adam and Eddy recognizing that this is Rumplestiltskin at his most compelling.
I completely agree. It re-centered his story in a horrifying way that makes me *head desk*, but it re-centered it. It seems clear to me that A and E recognize that Rumple’s entire story was being a father so maybe killing his son was a stupid idea!
I’m glad I’m not crazy on this front. Bobby didn’t feel like he was phoning it in in this one (which is what I felt from the mid season opener tbh), he seemed genuinely invested. It’s probably because it gets back to the core of his character. Is it wrong that there’s a part of me that wants to see his dire straights push him into Pan’s arms? It would be a train wreck but he’s in such a terrible spot that going to dad to help actually kind of seems plausible for his character at this point.
In other news: I continue to not be invested in Emma and Hook’s dramz at all, lol.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantI’d been waiting forever for the reveal that Emma had been with both Milha’s lover and son. I was hoping for more of a reaction, but whatever. At least it’s no longer swept under the rug.
THAT. THAT. Just THAT.
I feel like the fact that Gold killed her was the giant elephant in the room…you’d think they would have at least ALLUDED to that. Also grandson Henry gets zero acknowledgement from her. I guess they didn’t really have time for it, except Milah and Hook got a giant, pointless, ret-conny meeting scene, so……

Now, can I say there’s story arc fidelity in this? Absolutely not, he just regressed an absurd amount. But I actually found Hades’ turning everything on him at the end of the episode more compelling than anything else I’ve seen them do with him since Neal died. I really felt like there were stakes again for Rumps! The follow through will probably suck but…you know, for a second I sort of cared about the character again.
Of course, this makes Bae being fine and happy in heaven even MORE absurd considering his dad is ruining both his AND his family’s life, but we can’t have everything, clearly.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantI have to say, as someone not that interested in the show anymore, the prospect of a present-day Gold and Milah reunion is surprisingly compelling to me. I think they have more potential dramatic meat than the Hook/Emma angle (which will also probably be tackled, much to my chagrin.)
I feel as though cynical Gold will feel a lot more natural as Milah’s ex than Woobie Rumple did, haha.

March 6, 2016 at 11:23 pm in reply to: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOMENTS IN 5×12 Souls of the Departed #318175ouatrandothoughtsParticipantI agree with RG that Pan’s appearance felt like a bit of a missed opportunity. The interaction between him and Rumple felt largely like a rehash of the confrontations they had in previous episodes, and I felt like Robbie Kay is being held back from actually doing anything different with the character by Eddy and Adam’s weird commitment to making him the only villain who has to stay perpetually evil. And Rumple not even trying to find Neal also feels strange.
"Death cannot stop true love...it can only delay it awhile."
ouatrandothoughtsParticipantThat was such a mediocre episode of the show. I mean, granted, I haven’t watched it in a season and a half, but I could not get over the weird transformation of Jennifer Morrison’s acting. Also, it needed 100% more Rumple and 75% less Regina to make it palatable to me, lol.
The idea that Neal would be happy dead when his father is still evil/causing problems and his son is still…fatherless…is so comically wrong to me. I enjoyed seeing MRJ and JMo back together again, though.

ouatrandothoughtsParticipantRG, was the scene with Pan and Rumple fun, at least? That is literally why I’m watching the episode on Sunday. I will swing the bat for their terrible, terrible relationship even two seasons after I stopped watching.
Hmm. It’s hard to say since “fun” is subjective. But I will say that Robbie Kay as Pan is still totally amazing (he went back into character like he hasn’t had a break at all). Bobby is still Bobby.
That’s really all I needed to know. As long as they’re both playing the characters/relationship with fidelity, I’ll be into it. I think for as unpopular as the Pan twist was, one cannot deny the strength of the dynamic between those two. I’d put it right up there with Cora and Regina for messed up and yet somehow SO compelling.
I love how Robbie was able to bring out this vulnerability in Bobby when they were on the show together like no other character (except, perhaps, Neal/Bae, but he never abused the privilege the way Pan did, lol.) Like, you really felt in the scenes they had together–I’ve rewatched pretty much all of them–that Pan knew EXACTLY how to push his son’s buttons like no one else. And that Rumple was intimidated by him/he got in his head like no one else. I hope they have a few scenes together in this arc (Pan strong-arming his son into a team-up to get him out of the Underworld is all I hope and dream for from Bae-less Once.)
