ParticipantPodEmma looks like she’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown…like all Season Long!
Emma looks like JMo woke up with a hangover, threw on whatever clothes were in easy reach, walked out the door without even bothering to brush her hair, and when she got to set they just let her walk in front of the camera. Like, I get that Emma’s supposed to appear sleep deprived, but she just looks like hell.

ParticipantThey really should have given us some sort of an explanation for all of this.
I also wanna know how exactly Red expected it to go down if she did find her pack, because wasn’t she basically excommunicated back when she killed their leader (her mother)? Like, I get that she wants to find her pack, but really, is she just gonna rock up all, “Hey guys, long time no see, ‘sup!” Could they not have just included one line about how she hopes that they accept her when she does finally find them, considering what happened last time she was with them?

ParticipantI’m interested to see the David vs James stuff, so I hope *twitch* they get more than just that one scene where they beat each other up.
I’m also interested in Zelena meeting Cora, that’s a moment that really needs to happen.
Can’t bring myself to get invested in Regina reconciling with Zelena though, considering how Zelena very recently raped Regina’s TL, so them becoming friends/family so freaking quickly isn’t something I’m interested in seeing.

ParticipantI almost posted that link to Bri and Alex’s podcast in my last post! Haven’t listened to it myself yet though. I enjoy their commentary because they’re not shy about calling the show out on its shortcomings, and I’m looking forward to hearing what they have to say about this episode in particular.

ParticipantSnow’s line “people in love hurt each other all the time”- I find this line somewhat troubling. Whilst I get what Snow was probably aiming for “sometimes the people we love do things that make us upset”, the phrasing used is not what I’d say describes a healthy relationship. If a couple in love are hurting each other all the time then that’s not a good relationship for either party to be in.
That line was so jarring in the middle of her enouraging little peptalk. Can’t believe they didn’t re-work it to word it better. “Love can be hard, and sometimes you unintentionally hurt the person you love while you’re trying to figure it all out, but that doesn’t mean that you love each other any less.”

ParticipantThe lesbians may not have died at the end but I still have to call out the writers for what this episode was: a badly written, badly planned out ‘romance’ with no soul
If it’s any consolation, (and it’s not really because it’s an example of how devoid the show is these days of properly developed relationships), Hercules and Meg knew each other for all of 5 minutes and barely even interacted before they were declared TL and she was allowed tp cross over to Olympus to be with him. And Hades and Zelena fell in TL after one bike ride. So at least it’s the straight couples as well that they’re just not putting the effort in with.
However, in tv shows, they tend to signpost a little more when a character is interested in both genders or people from both genders. Ruby being interested in Dorothy kind of came out of left field.
This is a reason why I was so reluctant to get on board with the speculation that Red would be in the LGBT relationship, because I figured it would just feel OOC for her, given how they’ve only portrayed her as being straight in the past, (first with the boyfriend she ate, and then with the obvious setup they were doing for Frankenwolf before they ditched Red’s character). I’ve got no issue with it if Red discovers that she’s something other than straight, but I had no confidence in the writers to portray her dealing with that discovery in a believable way. I think they at least attempted to do it, when they had Red sitting on a log and quietly freaking out, unsure of how to handle these newfound emotions, but it was a pretty half hearted attempt.
Had they had Mulan encourage Red by talking about how she understands what she’s going through, because it threw her off when she was attracted to Aurora as well, and she had to take some time to figure out what it meant and who she is, and how accepting yourself as you are and trusting in what you feel and who you feel it for is an empowering thing, even if it can be confusing at first. Then it might have felt a bit less like it was totally out of left field, (and it also would have given Mulan some actual purpose to be in this episode, and might have softened the blow of her having to stand by and watch this all happen while she’s still there alone).
Her conversation with Snow was probably another attempt at them trying to convey Red coming to terms with believing that it’s a real thing that she’s fallen in love with a woman. But again it felt like they fell short in portraying it.
As you said elsewhere, the whole pronoun game with Mulan might not even be the writers’ fault, if it’s the result of executive meddling due to Mulan being a Disney princess.
It probably is Disney’s fault. There are so many people out there with bigoted, ignorant, hateful views who don’t accept that LGBT people are just normal people who deserve to be able to live and love happily like all the straight folks, that they surely knew that this episode would be divisive, and cause some people to get all riled up, because the lesbians are oh so evil. Can’t have such negative attention and controversy associated with one of their Disney Princesses.

ParticipantSo now Henry’s writing and illustrating while conscious, even though two episodes ago he was blacking out? And none of the other characters commented on this development? Not even a, “You seem to be getting the hang of this Author thing, Henry.” Really?!
Hades didn’t enchant Hook’s hook to carve names, he gave him a tool. Why should they bother with continuity in the SAME season?
That bothered me so much! Didn’t they also make his hook enchanted with heart taking ability when it shouldn’t have been recently? If the writers don’t care enough to keep things consistent, then how am I meant to be engaged in their story?
On the plus side, I actually enjoyed Snowing again for the first time in FOREVER in this ep. And we got to see Snow and Red’s friendship again, which was great.

ParticipantI was pleasantly surprised by how well Dorothy and Red clicked together. I’d honestly not been expecting them to be such a decent match when everyone was speculating that they’d be the couple. But the stuff about them both being outcasts, that worked for me as a reason they’d connect. Both of them being looked after be an older female in their family who stepped in as their mother figures, (who both run Diners, no less). Red ending up falling for someone who runs around with a crossbow. Dorothy having a dog as her only family, then falling in love with a wolf. I can get on board with all of that fun stuff.
BUT…
I thought it was ridiculous that Zelena and Hades fell in TL after one bike ride, and I find it ridiculous that Red and Dorothy fell in TL after one wolf ride.
The writers had been saying forever that they didn’t want their LGBT relationship to be “a very special episode”, and then they ended up going the “friend of Dorothy route” which was so cliche. Not to mention that that character is famous for singing a song about rainbows. And they’re not top tier characters on the show, so it’ll be a one and done, and that’s the end of having an LGBT relationship on the show. All of that makes for a perfect description of “a very special episode”! If they’d taken the time to integrate the characters over multiple episodes, and actually taken the time to show them fall in love in a believable way, it would have sat better with me.
BUT MOST OF ALL…WHAT ABOUT MULAN?! They brought her back to be the third wheel once again. She put on a brave face and gave Red advice to go and tell that woman that she loved her before it was too late, and I’m sure her heart was breaking all over again. She even had to stand by and watch another sleeping curse play out. And this time she was seeing two women find each other and fall in love, which is what she wants for herself, and she’s just there missing out all over again. Bringing her back for that was cruel, it was like rubbing salt into her wounds.
I haven’t decided if the cons outweigh the pros or not. Mostly I’m just disappointed that they waited so long to do this storyline, and then that’s all we got.

ParticipantLiked – That this episode actually brought up some interesting stuff regarding morals and dark and light and all that stuff, it was the most interesting and in depth the show has been in ages, and it actually made me think.
Dislike – Because of the show’s track record, I can’t bring myself to be bothered delving into all that moral ambiguity as much as I’d like to, because I’m pretty sure it’ll all be forgotten in an ep or two and will no longer be relevant to or consistent with the ongoing narrative of the show and development of the characters, so what’s the point.
*SIGH*

ParticipantShe says “after what I did to their friend,” though, not “her friend”. If anything that implies that Mulan and Red are together the “friends of Dorothy” and Dorothy’s not part of the couple at all. But we’re pretty positive that’s not true. I still think it’ll be Mulan and Dorothy. Mulan’s stayed back to watch over Dorothy to make sure no one tries to harm her while she’s under her sleeping curse, and Red’s gone off to gather intel.
