Urgh, the t-word and trees and movie theatres! I suspect they’ll get around that by saying he can still project himself somehow, even though he can’t physically move to places. That would cover him poofing in and out of the movie theatre, and also cover him being a blob of glowy smoke stuff. Though you’d think the point of someone trapping him in a tree would have been to contain his powers so he couldn’t do anything, so if he’s still able to project himself, it makes the tree situation a bit pointless.

No offense to anyone who ships anything, but I really want Mulan, Red and Whale to come back to have an awesome story, not to have a ship, or romance, or a quick match with another character at the end of the season(/show?) cause oh yeah we once planned on bringing those two together so let’s do that since everyone keeps asking us about it.

That’s just my opinion though. I guess I’m just very done with romantic story lines. Where’s the family? (Red&Granny) Where’s the adventure? (Mulan as part of Robin’s gang)

    Quote

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’d very much like to see non-ship stuff for these characters…but I don’t have high expectations for that happening.

I wanted Red to come back last season during the Cruella arc, (actually I’d wanted her there all along because it pisses me off that Snow’s going through crap all the time and her best friend is no where to be seen), because it would have been a perfectly organic way both to bring Red back, and to entwine Cruella with our older characters, if there was story to be told between the woman who loves killing dogs, and our resident werewolf. It would have worked beautifully, it seemed to me like an OBVIOUS opportunity…but apparently the writers didn’t realise it, which more than anything tells me that they really don’t give much of a crap about Red and expanding on her story in any significant way.

The last significant thing we did see from her, was her starting to bond with Victor on the “monster to monster” level. So even though the thought of Frankenwolf does make my shipper heart flutter, I’d also appreciate seeing it now because it would mean that they hadn’t just tossed their setup for those two characters in the trash, (like they’ve been known to do before).

I would sincerely love it if they brought Victor back and actually gave him something to DO. I don’t want him to just be Red’s boyfriend, I don’t want him to just have a token scene in the hospital. They gave themselves Doctor freaking Frankenstein and then just dropped him by the wayside when there surely must be some really cool story you can cook up when you have Doctor freaking Frankenstein to play with.

It has annoyed me to no end to not have Mulan around with the Merry Men. That was meant to be the next step in her story, but she wasn’t around, and no one even mentioned her, not even a passing mention to explain that she’d left them for some reason, or whatever. She should have been there camping out in the SB woods with the rest of them, and it infuriates me that she wasn’t. It’s somewhat hopeful *twitch* that that guy in that one photo looks like he might be from Mulan’s kingdom, so maybe we will actually get some legit exploration of where she’s come from and what she’s been up to. But let’s be real, we wouldn’t even be getting that stuff if they weren’t bringing her back to fulfill the LGBT quota, so her romantic relationship with whoever will absolutely be the main point of her being back.

My take on the show’s take on Baby!Bat is that I like having him around. For me it doesn’t detract from the focus of the show being about Jim, and about the city, I just feel like Bruce Wayne needs to be present or it’d probably feel like a gaping hole, considering how entrenched Bruce/Batman is in the mythos of Gotham City.

I admit that I had a moment of, “Why is Bruce at the police station?” But the more personal moment between him and Jim worked for me, because it came hard on the heels of Lucius’ confession that he regretted not having told Thomas Wayne what he’d meant to him, so the scene with Jim was Bruce learning that lesson.

Obviously, I don’t have a problem with Bruce and Jim being buddies, in fact I think that them having a connection is an important thing for the future Batman. Bruce lost both his parents, and now he’s gaining some new adult role models to teach him stuff he needs to know.

In Jim, Bruce is seeing one man who wants to take on saving a whole city. He’s seeing someone who struggles, both professionally and as an individual dealing with his failures and successes on a personal level, and the type of person it makes you into. Jim’s making compromises, making mistakes, getting in bed with shady types like Penguin, killing people he shouldn’t. Having Bruce present to observe all these things about Jim, I feel like he’s gonna learn a LOT that will inform the type of man he ends up being when he’s running around in a cape trying to save the city himself in the future. Jim’s sorta like a prototype hero, and Batman’s gonna be the improved second gen version. Bruce is also getting an insight into how the organisation that’s supposed to protect the city, is actually rife with corruption, which will no doubt be part of what inspires him to try and help in the future.

Bruce’s relationship with Alfred is of course very important in another way. Alfred has been his only friend, and his guardian. (SIDENOTE: OMG my heart broke when Alfred was standing there with one small bag and an umbrella and saying it was all he had. Bruce is the most valuable thing in his life, and the punk kid was telling him to leave. OMG MY HEART.) His relationship with Alfred is teaching him about tough love, and Bruce is learning to give as much as he gets. It’s a relationship that will be a rock for Bruce, no matter what other crap he goes through in life and how many people come and go, he knows he’ll always have Alfred, and he knows that even moreso after what happened in this ep where they came so very close to parting ways, but Bruce just couldn’t do it. I love that even though they can be hard with each other, there’s always a moment of softness, because that relationship is still keeping a little bit of lightheartedness in Bruce’s otherwise dreary existence. I loved how the train station scene, which had been a serious scene where they kept it real, ended on the, “WTH how am I supposed to fix the bloody computer?” note, which had a lighthearted tone. It was like them discussing putting the kettle on in the middle of arguing about making a bomb in the previous ep. I hope they keep that up, with having a lighter moment in the moments where Alfred and Bruce are bumping heads. Their reltionship is so important to me, and important for Bruce. Apart from the personal level, obviously we’re gonna get Alfred training him too, which is gonna be an important thing he needs to learn for his future career.

And now we also have Lucius, (who I’m loving, so MORE OF HIM PLZ), who is already parting some wisdom on a personal level, but will also no doubt teach Bruce a bunch of tech stuff which will contribute to how he operates in the future. And he’ll also be an avenue for Bruce to learn about the corrupt, corporate side of the city, which he’ll need to know if he’s gonna try to undermine that nastiness.

So, all of that long, drawn out ramble to say that, basically, I’m really liking what they’ve got going on for Bruce. I think it’s laying some great foundations for who he’ll become, and I think he’s an important piece of the Gotham puzzle.

    In other news…

Jerome scares the crap out of me in that “I can’t look away from the screen but I want to recoil from the screen” kinda way. Cameron is so brilliant in this role, I can’t even! That Russian Roulette scene…WHO DOES THAT?!

Seeing the police station with all those bodies lying everywhere was pretty hardcore.

Knew Essen was toast at some point as soon as she became Commisioner, because Jim’s gotta get that job somehow, but did not expect her to be killed so soon! Love that she stood her ground against Jerome. PS. Her telling Jerome that no one would even remember is name felt like some Joker confirmation to me, because Joker’s origin isn’t meant to be known.

I was bummed that the quiet, crazy guy in the Maniax, don’t remember his name, but the one the cops got, I was getting a kick outta him and was bummed he got killed.

Theo is so cold and controlled and scary, James Frain is killing it. They’ve said that his character’s true identity is someone who people will know from the comics, and even though I dunno much about the comics, I’m excited to see who he ends up being.

There was a fight with a sword and a chainsaw!

Shoutout to the cinematography, sometimes this show has some serious money shots, and in this ep it was the scene with the cheerleader’s bus, with the reflection of it in the mirror, and it was framed in a way that it kinda warped my brain for a second and I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. Here’s the screencap to show what I mean.

I get that Harvey’s fiancee doesn’t want him involved in the dangerous life, but danger’s in his blood, dammit, and she’ll just have to learn to accept it. I loved how Harvey was still giving Jim suggestions for the investigation even though he wasn’t supposed to be involved.

Ed finally impressed the girl, and he didn’t even have to listen to his sleazy other self and manipulate her into it, all he had to do was take a bullet for her.

RufeePeach is rewriting S5 with Neal instead of the pirate. Because that’s how it was supposed to go. She’s amazing.

At least they had the decency to have Snow say, “Again?” But OMG AGAIN, REALLY?

Like – it seems they might have increased the show’s CGI budget.
Dislike – they haven’t increased the wig budget, Snow’s hair makes me want to cry and I don’t know how Ginny stands for it.

    The dwarves storming into Granny’s

Grumpy’s line about how it’s actually “embarrassing” how much stuff the Dwarves haven’t been involved in made me chuckle. Oh Show, you’re so meta sometimes.

Hook trying to have Henry break all the rules AND free the woman who killed his father. Come on. Stop this, OUAT. If you want me to be at least moderately accepting of Hook as Henry’s potential step father, then stop showing that he’s a truly horrible influence.

They almost had him actually scoff when he said the word “honour” in response to Henry saying what Emma would and wouldn’t want him to do. Then he proceeded to talk Henry into helping free the woman who loves to gloat about having been responsible for his father’s death, the woman who is a massive threat to Regina, who is the heaviest hitter they have left in the magic stakes at the moment. Hook trying to free Zelena was a dumb move which nearly wrecked everything, but he’ll still come out of it smelling like a rose. If I thought they were deliberately setting him up to be secretly shady because they’re building up to something, it wouldn’t bug me as much, (I enjoyed Hook back in the day when he was just being shady), but I think the writers are oblivious to how they’re actually writing him, and they think he’s just the passionate romantic hero type, which…no, they need to pay attention to the words they’re making him say.

Zelena having any part to play at all. I cannot stand her. And she basically admitted to raping Robin. But OUAT will never actually delve into that. They just leave problematic consent out in the air and never touch it again.

They even put emphasis on it by having Robin insist, “Quite unwilling,” but again, they don’t really pay attention to the words they’re giving the characters to say, so the issue won’t be properly addressed.

While on the subject of Zelena, did I miss something or was there no real explanation as to how Regina managed to get the wand back? I know she said that she knew the spell would weaken Zelena, but that’s a pretty weak explanation for what happened, and it took me right out of the scene trying to figure out what had actually happened.

Regina enchanted Hook’s hook and it was a one time use. Plot holes and inconsistencies like that drive me nuts.

OMG I CANNOT. Did the writers just forget what they wrote, (though it would have taken them all of 5 minutes to double check)? Or did they just expect the viewers to not notice? The former makes them seem dumb, the latter makes them seem insulting.

The Beauty and the Beast Rose (but why didn’t she make it more portable? BUT OMG OMG OMG)

I’m glad they’ve introduced it, but it felt like quite a fleeting mention. Even if they’d taken a few extra seconds to have Blue shrink it down to pendant size or something so Belle could carry it around easily, that would have put some more focus on something which is quite iconic.

I don’t like Arthur for some reason. I already predict that guy has some hidden evulz about him.

Last thing I saw the actor in, he was a terrorist, but I didn’t really get a shady vibe from him as Arthur, (yet).

The usher’s accent and tone of voice (“Don’t”) reminded me of Socha. And the usher’s uniform is scarlet. If the usher is an avatar for Merlin, then maybe Will will turn out to be one, too.

Alas they’re done with Will, I’d be shocked if we ever see him again.

Really enjoyed her, she’s fun, she’s feisty, the actress did a flawless job. Gonna be sad to see her leave whenever her part in the show is done.

I found Emma and Rumple’s interaction in this ep quite enjoyable, they played off each other really well, both actors were terrific.

But all that good stuff is overshadowed by how random it was that this is how the Dark One curse is affecting Emma, when it’s not what we’ve seen previously. Rumple didn’t ooze out of the Vault, and he didn’t have Zoso haunting his thoughts. He stabbed the guy, the dark magic went into him, and BOOM, DONE. They made no attempt to explain why it’s happening differently this time, so no matter how well it’s been acted thus far, the whole premise is really rather annoying to me.

One more opportunity lost by killing off Neal, though: He could have contrasted Emma’s transformation with his father’s.

Ah well. This show is wonderful but it’s an Oregon trail left littered with the graves of lost opportunities to reach its full potential.

    Quote

I fully believe that from day 1 they had always planned to have their Saviour go all Dark One at some point in the show’s run. I fully believe that that’s why they had her fall in love with and have a child with the son of the Dark One, because it would make for a compelling story when it got to the part where she herself took on the curse. It was the perfect setup to continue the story, to have some consistency between the distant past and the present, in a way that would make an emotional impact. The curse that Neal had failed at saving his father from, had now consumed the woman he loved, his son was now in the same position he himself had been. Seeing how they all dealt with that could have been a wonderfully heartfelt story. But alas, things happened, and now here we are. *SIGH*
