ParticipantIt does seem to be a bit of a retcon, but at least it’s one I can fanwank away without too much trouble by thinking that Maleficent was just playing dumb to fish for more information about Regina’s relationship with Rumple, without having to reveal her own past with him in the process.

ParticipantThat episode actually wasn’t as bad as I’d anticipated. The one scene that made me really feel something was when Chernabog was on top of the Bug, smashing in the windscreen. DO NOT HURT SWANFIRE’S BUG!

ParticipantMaybe it’s because I had really low expectations, but this ep was more watchable than I’d been anticipating.
I enjoyed the opening sequence in SB. The clock ticking over from 8:15, Henry in school, being taught by Snow, a lesson about birds. Regina’s in the Mayor’s office, Emma has her Sheriff badge. Those scenes had some real S1 charm about them.
Liked seeing Chernabog. I liked the design of him over all, and he came across as being suitably creepy. His sizing seemed inconsistent, but I can overlook that relatively easily. What’s harder to overlook is that NO ONE saw the massive cloud of black smoke ooze from the box and form into a massive demon in the sky right behind where they were standing? Really?! I’m kinda disappointed by how quickly they dispatched with him, but at least he did get to be a threat for a whole ep. When that sneak peek came out, many of us had worried that that one scene would be his only appearance, so it was nice to see him several times.
Nitpick: They made a big deal about having to get the translation for an incantation…then when Regina cast the spell, she didn’t say a single word.
Belle still being on the verge of bawling her eyes out when talking about Rumple, YES GOOD, actual lasting emotional impact from the emotional trauma that a character has endured! That’s a rare thing for this show, so I appreciated it!
Don’t like Belle working closely with Hook. I guess we’re supposed to think that during the missing 6 weeks he’s offered up a genuine apology? But given that all we’ve seen was the “apology” from 4A, it just does not sit well with me that Belle’s cooperating with someone who has abused her and shown no genuine remorse. I think that’s a poor message for the show to be sending. At least she made the comment about him still having his temper, and she jumped when he suddenly smashed the board over. That reaction from Belle was fitting given the history between these two characters. But at the same time, the fact that she DID react that way makes it unbelievable that she’d happily be left alone with him, and be happily willing to work with him.
I’m glad they referenced that people are aware that Hook was involved in putting the Apprentice in the Hat too. I appreciate that Hook is beating himself up about it, because he’s NOT completely blameless in the things he’s done. It bugs me that other people, including Belle of all people, are trying to tell him not to be so hard on himself because it’s really not his fault. Let him be held accountable for the crap he’s done! Regina’s had to, so why does Hook just get a free pass?
Rumple and the QoD was odd for me, because I didn’t get much from their interactions in the flashbacks, but I really enjoyed their banter in present day. Like, I was actually genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed scenes with Rumple, Ursula and Cruella. Was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed Cruella, but again, I liked her more in present day than in flashbacks. Same goes for Ursula. It’s weird because the characters are the same in both timelines, so I can’t really explain why they felt different to me in the present day scenes.
The scene of Rumple crossing over the line, going from hobbling with his walking stick to strutting like a boss in the space of a single pace was very effective.
Nitpick: Why did Cruella know that Maleficent was “dead”? She was still very much alive right up until when the Curse was cast, and only “died” after getting to SB, and Cruella has had no knowledge of things that happened in SB.
I’m intrigued by Snowing confronting Ursula and Cruella, but at the same time am wary that whatever that history ends up being, will feel like a retcon of some sort.
The whole thing with the Book Author just bugs me, because from everything we’ve seen, the Book documents what has already happened, it doesn’t tell the future, so the whole thing about finding the Author so they can write a new ending MAKES NOT A LICK OF SENSE.

ParticipantAh so it was a deep and meaningful mention of how Neal was an actual person who mattered and got the crap end of the stick in life. He didn’t just exist to be a sperm donor. Good to know. *eyeroll*
Phee
ParticipantIn what context was Neal mentioned in the recap show?

ParticipantI have reached this point of numbness from the show. I’m not shocked by anything and not in a good way. Even up till 4a I hated some parts but I still wanted to watch the show. Now I’m just …. uninterested. Like I said, numb. I’m very meh about the whole thing.
Same. I can’t summon up the enthusiasm I once had for watching it, or even for speculating about it. There are still some things that rile me up, (I tweeted Adam the other day about how in interviews they mention how it took Emma time to let in Henry, and her parents, but they completely ignore how she reconciled with Neal, and they just jump right to talking about CS. I read it in a couple of articles and it just pissed me off, so I had to tweet my displeasure), but for the most part I just don’t give a crap any more. *sigh*
But more than anything, I am tired of missing a show that is actually still on the air.
This is so accurate, it makes me want to weep.
*pouring a round of drinks for those of us still planning to sit through the new ep*

ParticipantAnd Wes, did he really kill Rebecca? We think of him as this sweet boy. They mutilated a body after killing a guy, who was attacking someone to be sure, but they did bad things to the body. Could he have done this? Was it one of the others?
I’m not convinced that any of them would have killed her, considering how stressed they’ve been over having been involved in Sam’s murder and trying to cover it up, why on earth would any of them want to compound that by killing another person as well?
Would someone else have had the opportunity to come into the house and get down to the basement? Is there a door from the basement to get outside without having to come in through the front door? Earlier in the ep they showed Asher still coming in even after Frank shut the door in his face, so I have to wonder if that’s a little clue about people sneaking in? And it seemed Annalise probably went out a door other than the front door to get outside at the end there?
If someone snuck in, and went down to the basement, then it’d be someone who knows the house and knew exactly where to go. Which brings me back to thinking it may have been Nate. Though in his current physical state he’s not exactly sly and stealthy and quick, so I dunno? I guess he coulda called someone and told them to go take care of Rebecca for him? But I still dunno if he’d have a motive? I guess she knew that Nate was trying to gather intel on Sam, which probably wouldn’t help his case, so maybe she’s a liability if she were able to testify to that, so he silenced her?
I hate that it’s gonna be MONTHS before we get any new clues to ponder.

ParticipantObviously I had to review it
but I also mean the sort of interaction that is visceral in nature: screaming, shouting, throwing objects at the screen. I experienced all of this during the season one finale of ABC’s unbelievable, heart pounding, mind boggling, simply epic ‘How To Get Away With Murder‘.
YES! If you seriously can’t sit still during a show, you know it’s good stuff!

ParticipantAlso pretty sure that Annalise does’t know about Frank being a hitman for Sam. Though, Annalise does seem to know that Sam did not kill LIla (the whole scene with her and Wes screams that Annalise knows full well what is going on) and did make me think…what if Sam called Annalise who called Frank?
I was reading an article just before where Viola said that she played it as though Annalise is unaware about Frank and Sam and Lila.
I think Laurel might be my favorite of the Keating kids
She hasn’t really consistently stood out to me, but sometimes she just does the thing straight up, and makes me take notice. She’s a determined force when she wants to be.
But MAN Michaela. She is a schemer. Someone who is determined to get to the top at all costs and will adopt whatever persona she has to.
It’s a bit frightening because you wonder what her limit is. Obviously being involved in a murder rattled her, but I wouldn’t put much past her.
I want to be her.
X100% agree. Connor is going to have a lot to deal with and i will place money that Oliver is going to blame Connor for the HIV. Not because Connor gave it to him, but if Connor hadn’t cheated then Oliver wouldn’t have slept with the other guy once they broke up and contracted HIV.
Just wanna share a thing (linked for language) that made my heart hurt, so I wanna share the misery.
As for Oliver blaming Connor, I think that’d be believable in the sense that finding anyone to blame would be a natural reaction in his position. But I think that Oliver is smart enough that if he did feel like that, he’d get over it and accept that he made his own choice to sleep with the other guy.
I could very easily see Connor blaming himself, for those same reasons you outlined. The self imposed guilt could drive him to overcompensate and maybe become a bit overbearing. The, “It should have been me,” could fuel his self loathing, (for all his bravado, the guy’s actually pretty emotionally fragile to begin with), and in a cruel twist, maybe it’d drive him to actually start a drug habit. Maybe he could rationalise it as, “Well at least that’s one less lie I’m telling him.” I dunno how much treatment costs for HIV, but if it’s a lot, maybe he’d even start dealing drugs to be able to pay for it, which he feels he needs to do because he feels responsible. (If I were a writer I’d so fic this angst.)
I just need them to make it through together, though. I need for Oliver to not get sick in the immediate future, because I don’t need another ship joining my others on the ocean floor due to death, please and thank you!

ParticipantOK, coherent comments, (that will be all over the place because I’m trying to make sense of the notes I scribbled all over this piece of paper as I was watching)…
You all know how I thought it was Annalise who killed Lila. As the episode went on, and it became more apparent that other people HADN’T killed her, plus they had her say to that priest about how she’s done far too many horrible things, (interesting how they drew the comparison between lawyers and priests and the things people tell them and the things they can and can’t say in public), I was almost about to warm up the victory dance, because there really weren’t many candidates left. And then BOOM, SAM CALLED FRANK. And it was one of the perfect fakeouts in this ep, because earlier Frank had been all, “What kinda person do you think I am?” like, “No dude, I’m a lot of things, but I’m not a killer.” But OH YES HE TOTALLY IS.
And Sam said that Frank owed him, so I can’t wait to see what that’s all about, which will hopefully be explored in S2. And for how close Frank is to Annalise, it looks like he still has some secrets from her, like how he was a hitman employed by her husband, which I’m pretty sure Annalise did not know about.
“Eggs 911”, what even? Does that mean that Rebecca’s codename is Eggs? Is the other person Bacon, (first thing I think of that would go with eggs)? Bacon – pig – cop – did she send the message to Nate? He’d have known his way around Annalise’s house to be able to get in and out whilst killing Rebecca. Would he have a motive though? Maybe he figured he’s already on trial for murder, so may as well kill someone? I dunno, I just don’t think Frank killed Rebecca, and Nate’s the other person who knew Rebecca but wasn’t already at the house, I haven’t really thought through if he’d have motive to kill her or not.
BTW, another nice fakeout there because earlier I was half expecting Rebecca to have locked herself in Wes’ bathroom and killed herself, but then oh nope, it’s cool, she’s still alive. NOPE!!
OMG when Annalise arranged to have Nate beaten!! Like, OK she was desperate to get him out on bail, and HER FACE when Bonnie told her he’d just been sent to solitary instead, but DANG.
What’s Asher gonna say in that interview that’s gonna blow everything up? You know he’s gonna say SOMETHING that will be the only actual 100% true account of that night, and it won’t jive with the stories the others have given. There’s gonna be just one little thing that doesn’t match up.
Lila really was pretty horrible to Rebecca. Rebecca’s no saint either, but in her messed up way she was trying to help a friend by proving that Griffin was no good. But dang, Lila really was a selfish little homewrecker, huh.
Rebecca implying that maybe Wes’ mother really didn’t kill herself was COLD and unnecessary. I get that she was mad, but seriously, it’s not like you haven’t been lying to him, honey, so glass houses and all that. The lies and secrets and paranoia were STRONG in this ep ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Poor Rudy, he was such a sweet, normal guy until Rebecca messed him up. Glad we finally saw where the scratches came from.
Southern Michaela creeps me out a bit. Like, that facade drops, and her real accent creeps in, and you realise how proficient she is as being fake all the time. I enjoyed her laying into Rebecca.
Laurel had the ring all along! Laurel is so crafty.
One of my fave scenes was when Annalise went to talk to Rebecca in the basement…
I was worried when I first found out you and Wes were involved. Because of you. I saw you for who you were. I recognised you. You’re angry, you lash out, use people, but only because you don’t know better. Been alone so long you don’t know what it means to love someone. And here’s a boy who so clearly loved you. Still does, even if he doesn’t know who you are any more. And he hates himself right now for doing this to you. He came to us so innocent and he believed you when you said you didn’t do it. But now he’s grown up, you and I have made him grow up.
Annalise saw herself in both Rebecca and Wes. She can relate to both sides, and it shows how messed up she really is inside, despite her hard exterior, and I love the scenes that show that about Annalise.
This was the first time when I saw Annalise and Wes interact and I thought I miiiiight be able to buy it if they go in the mother/son direction. I think it came down to how we saw Wes breaking down like we haven’t before, while Annalise kept it together, so they seemed less like equals. On the flipside though, I could still buy it if next season Annalise wants to get Wes’ mind off trying to track down missing Rebecca, so she seduces him. So I’m really not THAT convinced of the mother/son dynamic still.
One of my fave lines of the ep was probably Connor saying, “Sure he shouldn’t take the trophy?” when Wes was going to see Rebecca. OH SNAP.
Which brings me to Connor…and Oliver…OMG POOR SWEET OLIVER, (who was ADORABLE doing that backwards roll off the sofa, he’s so seriously lovely and precious). Another of the great fakeouts they pulled off in this ep, having him be the one to suggest getting tested, and he’s the good one who hasn’t slept around with 40 guys, and then he told Connor he tested negative, and having Connor be concerned about his own results. Then NOPE. It musta been that one guy who was there the night that Connor came to see him. One guy, vs Connor’s 40. It’s a hard hitting message that they’re addressing, and I think it’s a good direction for them to go story wise, even though it BREAKS MY HEART. It’s kind of a responsible thing for them to do, after having showed Connor sleeping with so many people, and we all still love him despite the fact he’s a (am I allowed to say?) “slut”. But now he’s been brought to this screeching halt because CONSEQUENCES, and it’s a thing that Connor’s gonna have to face, even though he personally got away with it against the odds. I guess maybe it’s a bit PSA-ish, but I think it’ll be really interesting to see how this affects their relationship, and how it makes Connor grow as a person.
Is it time for S2 yet? How about now? NOW?!?!
PS. I hope the editors for this show get awards, because they do all the fast cuts and stuff so well, it really adds to the frantic nature of the characters.
