ParticipantHere’s an interesting video on unconscious bias:
Watch this great Ted Talk on unconscious bias – brief but impactful!
This applies to all walks of life, but explains neatly why OUAT and media more generally, continue to have such problems with representing diversity, despite claiming to have good intentions. The research has been around for a while now, and some companies are taking specific steps to counter hidden bias in areas like recruitment. It’s helping more women reach senior executive positions. I would really like to see the media industry do something similar. Biases are shaped by our environment, and the media is a huge part of our “cultural marinade”. If they’re not actively countering biases, they’re contributing to them.
I think equality is such a tight rope to walk to be truly equal. Whilst there should definitely be more representation for non-white and non-heterosexual groups in the media to represent the real world, I do think the scale could eventually start to tip in the other direction years and possibly decades from now where being white and heterosexual becomes the minority.
It is so difficult to explain but basically the minorities now will become the majorities in the future whilst the majority now will become a future minority because everyone is so focussed on equality of the minorities now. For example, women are given more top tier jobs because of equality however eventually the scales will tip too far in that direction where it is harder to get a top tier job if you are a man instead of it being equal opportunity. Does that make sense?

ParticipantThere was a deleted scene for season 4 that showed that Dopey originally ran the ice cream shop before Ingrid took it over.

ParticipantSince SDCC is late in July this year, they’ll probably show actual clips from Season 6. They did this with Season 4 at SDCC 2014. The panels from the other years were only a few short days after filming had started, so it was too soon to show new footage.
For season 3 they showed that scene between Rumple and Felix or was that D23?
I also predict that they’ll preview the new Underworld story with Cruella, as they always tease or show entirely a bonus feature from the upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release.
SDCC 2012 – Singlebrooke
SDCC 2013 – Good Morning Storybrooke
SDCC 2014 – Inside the Writers Room
SDCC 2015 – The Three Who StayedI hope so, that’s probably what I’m most looking forward to on the DVD.
What about Hunchback? Isn’t the anniversary this year? I was thinking they’d do an episode in honor of that (called Outcasts….)
I guess Hunchback is still possible, but it’s not considered one of their biggest films, so it could go either way. I mean, yesterday was the 20th anniversary, and the only acknowledgement I saw from Disney was a simple tweet and FB post. Still, I guess the whole theme of “what makes a monster and what makes a man” could tie well into Regina/Evil Queen and Jekyll/Hyde, if they wanted to go that route. Plus, we did see a gypsy girl in the Land of Untold Stories.
Hunchback could go either way because it’s got religion in it as a main driving factor and OUAT seems to be trying to avoid religion. Though the thems of Hunchback would definitely fit into this season so who knows.
Princess and the Frog wasn’t a big film for Disney. It had the hype about having the first black Disney princess but it wasn’t a massive success. It’s certainly no Aladdin, Beauty and the beast, Little Mermaid or Frozen. Once did Hercules and that wasn’t considered a massive success for Disney.

ParticipantLily, Red, and Mulan might be secondary and tertiary characters, but Dopey is incredibly far below. Like maybe 6th tier.
Agreed. Even within the dwarves themselves, Dopey is quite low ranking.
Grumpy is obviously up top. He’s the main dwarf that’s featured and given lines.
Sneezy is in second mainly due to his season 1 screen time as Mr Clark. He is now the most recognisable after Grumpy.
Happy is in third. He is normally around when some of the dwarves are required for a scene. The other four dwarves are background dressing. Doc and Bashful have had a few lines here and there but Dopey and Sleep haven’t said anything, they’re just there.
Episode appearances
Grumpy- 38 plus that one episode of OUATIW
Sneezy- 27
Happy- 28
Sleepy-28
Doc- 30
Bashful-25
Dopey- 19As you can see, Dopey has considerably less screen time than the others. Also, whilst Doc and Sleepy may have been in more episodes than Sneezy, Sneezy’s scenes had more substance. Doc tends to be just there.

ParticipantHmm, so it seems like people are divided both on whether he will retain his hook and whether he should.
There’s a couple of points I’d like to hone in on. The first is to do with the symbolism of the hook and how it links the character to his original mythology. Many people, including myself, have said that the hook represents Hook’s dark past. Some have also said that it’s what makes him him. For the sake of argument, I’m going to present a different interpretation here. Suppose the hook symbolized Hook’s heartbreak over Milah and his desire for revenge on Rumple? If that’s the show’s take on it – and it could be, then it would make sense for him to lose it once he was over those things. This interpretation also implies that Killian Jones is not limited to or defined by the persona of ‘Hook the pirate’. It’s just something he was for a period of his life, like Regina was the Evil Queen. Most people seem alright with Regina cutting ties with the EQ, so why is it different for Hook? Like we know the the EQ will always be part of Regina; we don’t need a physical reminder of that. So why do we need it for Hook? Does it boil down to the message about disability, or is there something about the character that would feel off if he was completely severed from his mythological roots?
My second point is to do with Hook being an amputee and therefore the show’s representation of people with a disability. In that case, do you think it is inappropriate to have people, eg. Regina, make derogatory remarks that reference this fact – calling him a “one handed pirate” for instance?
Hook tried it with his hand back and it didn’t work out so well for him. I also think though that the man Hook was before he got his Hook is not the man Hook wants to be. Part of the reason Rumple got one over on Hook was planting the idea that the severed hand belonged to the man Hook use to be not the one he has become, and the man Hook used to be was an arsehole.
I don’t think Regina’s remarks are an issue in that, when she does say them it is done flippantly rather than maliciously but also her “one-handed” comment seems to be more a descriptive turn of phrase rather than an insult eg “if you want help threading a needle, your best bet is not to ask the one handed pirate”. It’s no different than calling Henry a “thirteen year old” eg “If you need to buy wine for the dinner party, don’t send the thirteen year old”.
The issue with Hook losing his hook in place of a hand is that, if Hook is indeed used as representation for disabled people (whether or not it’s a positive portrayal is up for debate), it’s that it implies that being disabled is something to be ashamed of. Now Hook could get a prosthetic hand which could represent a blend of Hook’s personalities or what have you, but I think a real hand should be out of the question.

ParticipantBut…but…he was my favorite dwarf!! I wanted him to have a storyline…I wanted him to speak!….. why…whyyy!!!
It seems he chose to leave the show
I wonder why. But then again, it wasn’t like they were doing much with him…. :/Sneezy and Happy are my favourite dwarves but if Dopey leaves, how can it be the seven dwarves when there are only six of them or is Anton getting an upgrade?

ParticipantI’m too obsessed with Game of Thrones right now to give an answer appropriate for Disney characters…
Just imagine if Once Upon a Time was like Game of Thrones only with Disney characters…

ParticipantYeah for me, if they really want to make him all good and take out his sense of mystery as far as what he’s going to do and if you can trust him, his final step in his transformation should be removing his Hook for a hand.
I could see them doing it as a series finale type thing.
I still think that’s an iffy message to be sending. As has been pointed out, Hook is basically an amputee. It’s seems a bit off for his happy ending to occur because he’s got all his limbs back intact even though he could be happy without the hand. It’s almost like saying that Regina can only be truly happy when she has the ability to have kids of her own.

ParticipantSince this season seems to be Jekyll and Hyde-ing it with the characters eg Regina and the EQ, do you think we’ll see Belle as more Lacey like by the end of it? Kind of like the characters are split into their dark and light sides (So the rest of the cast get to have fun too rather than just Lana) and then both sides are reunited so then you get a more balanced personality?
