ParticipantExcept Cruella is 100% evil apparently. Sigh.

ParticipantI really hate it. Yes, it was a shock twist but that doesn’t make it good.
Just think about it – what does this really have to do with the Cruella we’ve seen thus far in the show?
It goes against the “Evil wasn’t born, it’s made.”
I do agree that sometimes we lack villains that are just flat out jerks. In real life, real villains are often just overly privileged people with no regard for others. I suppose Cruella was a rich girl with a sense of entitlement but she became like that so young.
OUAT has become a total trainwreck.

Participantthere are just too many problems with this, both in terms of race/gender(fridging a WoC), consent and storyline consistency. i really wish A&E were better at admitting screw ups. it’s usually easier to pull back or go “psyche” on a convoluted retcon that it is to pull off that retcon in the first place.

Participantracism isn’t an opinion just so we’re clear on that much. it’s only an opinion if you’re not affected by it. it’s not “politics”. it’s something that directly affects people’s lives in an unambiguous way. so i’d like if we can at least agree on the fact that racism in the media and OUAT’s representation of minorities is an issue.
i need to clear this if this is going to be a space that PoC feel they can take part in.

ParticipantIt was rude, as is the mutual backrub in the two posts above. It’s frustrating to take part in an argument where two people are eagerly shaking hands over how not-racist they are.
if you want to have a mature discussion with me, please don’t do it. I have very little patience with these arguments after having dealt with them for years and being silenced and dogpiled.

ParticipantUnintentional racism is still racism. Do I think A and E are setting out to be racist? No. Certainly not. But the way they write the PoC on this show does come across as being unintentionally racist, with no one it the writing room realizing it. It’s an issue when every single PoC on the show is being treated the way they are being treated.
I can see your point however I wouldn’t necessarily call it racism for the reason that racism is bullying based on someone’s race or skin colour. Bullying is the persistent and DELIBERATE intent to belittle and cause feelings of negativity and low self-worth in others. Whilst the lack of POC certainly does seem to be a recurring thing, if A&E aren’t deliberately doing it then it’s not bullying which means it’s not racism. But I can totally see why it does appear that way.
And the story they keep writing is that PoC are easily disposed of or secretly white people. It’s…an issue.
It is an issue but there also plenty of white characters that just disappear and what not so it’s not just an issue that’s relegated to POC characters.
Zelena being alive does not necessitate Marian dying in the way past, or as someone else put it, before the show actually had to deal with her in any meaningful way. She spent most of 4A passed out, and then in her big return: she’s been dead all along and is really a white woman. And on top of this, we actually saw a really strong woman in Marian in the EF flashbacks. It’s insult to injury.
Again I think it’s more a case of A&E didn’t know what to do with Marian beyond using her as an obstacle for OQ which backfired on them rather than them deliberately side-lining Marian because she’s a POC. Quote
ugh. i like that you used a white woman clapping too.
And this is how currently how I feel about this thread. So done. That we apparently have to snipe at each other over what gifs we use to express our emotions.
yes, because criticism of inappropriate usage of gifs, unlike racism, represents a real social issue people should be upset about.
if you don’t have something relevant to add then please don’t reply. this is a forum for discussion, adding +1s only makes it frustrating for the person you’re arguing with.

Participantreally important that everyone reads this with regards minority characters:
It puts a lot in perspective. When a queer or PoC characters gets offed or erased, it MATTERS, a lot.

ParticipantPoC characters get disposed of proportionately far more often than white characters. I’d wager this is true of wider television too(it’s certainly true of queer characters).
