ParticipantInteresting topic AND interesting because while we were watching last night my husband at one point said “She’s just like seriously disturbed” about Dairy Queen, and later I said “It’s like she became psychotic out of desperation to get her sisters back and she’s so creepy about it.”
I really like the way EM has played her because, unlike Zelena where I felt like she was just WAY over the top a lot of the time, Dairy Queen seems like a very normal person a lot of the time and then when her “evilness” comes out it is more understated combined with a desperation. I actually think they have done a pretty good job of showing that Dairy Queen is the way she is BECAUSE of everything that happened to her and that she was so messed up that she wasn’t really capable of making healthy decisions and she had NO ONE to love her or help her so she became even more messed up. Of all the characters I think they are showing that she truly is more mentally unstable as opposed to a “villain.”
At the same time I think you could argue that ALL of the characters on the show who fall under the villain category are suffering from SOME form of mental illness whether it is depression, post traumatic stress disorder, full blown psychosis, or dozens of others. And even if someone is suffering from a mental illness it doesn’t excuse behavior that harms another person. So really, it would be hard for them to portray ANY of the villains without in some way also portraying various mental illnesses. But I think that is where OUaT is unique in it’s portrayal of fairy tale characters. There really aren’t any strictly good or evil characters on the show in the traditional sense. Because we get to see the characters’ backgrounds and beginnings we are relating to them as “people” not fairy tale characters and we are then getting to understand WHY each of these people have made the choices they have made – which IS essentially showing us the state of mental health of each of the characters. So we are being shown what can happen to someone if they are isolated from thear family, abandoned by their parents, orphaned as a child, lose people they love, regret decisions they have made, addicted to power, overcome with jealously, consumed with vengeance, etc. We see what happens when people are faced with two decisions and they make a bad one – how it can hurt themselves and other, or if they make a good one how it can change their life for the better.
So I guess it all depends on how you look at the show. If you just look write off all the villains as “crazy” then I think people are probably missing the point.

ParticipantI changed my screen name from rumplegoldfan to killianhookfan. I just couldn’t take my own screen name anymore – especially after last night. I love Robert Carlyle and I love the role Rumple plays on the show, I mean you need a villain that everyone hates. And RC plays mean and nasty better than anyone and I love his creepy Rumple. But since CS is my OTP I just really struggle with what is going on with him right now – even though I love the Killian and Gold scenes.
So it’s still me – I think my screen name just better reflects me now.

ParticipantWhat if they do a reverse of how the curse was broken in the movie?
Anna throws herself in front of Elsa to protect her in the movie which ends up being the act of true love which saves her frozen heart.
Regina has been determined to find a way to break the curse on Marian because she loves Robin. What if DQ is about to finish Marian off and Regina throws herself in front of Marian as an act of true love because she wants to save Marian for Robin. Then Robin could kiss Regina to save her from whatever curse was aimed at Marian but taken by Regina instead. It would also tidy up a lot of the mess. Saving Marian from death in this reality would “make up” for killing her in the old reality. Marian would be able to forgive her for killing her. It would show the depth of Regina’s love for Robin that she was willing to sacrifice herself to make sure that her true love could be happy (thinking he and Marian should be together) and that Marian deserved Robin more than she does. It would also prove that there is nothing you can do fight true love – Robin tried to save Marian by kissing her but it didn’t work. If he can save Regina by kissing her it proves they are true love. It also sets up an opportunity to show what would have happened if Regina had walked into the tavern when she first saw a Robin and to give us Robin/Marian backstory by showing that there are consequences to all actions and decisions. Yes, Emma made the right decision by saving Marian but it DID change the lives of more than just Marian. Just like Regina choosing NOT to go into the tavern changed more lives than just hers. It gives Marian an opportunity to find out if there was someone else out there destined for HER.

ParticipantI disagree completely with your comment rumplegoldfan. If those pictures you are referring to are the dock pictures then there was a scene rehearsal before the actual scene was shot hence why it might have looked like they were “hanging all over each other”. Bobby and Emilie are grown adults, Emilie is not trying to lead Bobby astray and the implication that she is and therefore it’s a good thing she might be leaving the show is unfair. If, and that is a big if, there was indeed something going on, then it takes two to tango and the blame can’t be put on Emilie entirely. Also if people want to tweet their disappointment to A&E about something that happened on the show then they are perfectly in their right to so long as they stay civil and polite.
No, I wasn’t referring to the dock scenes – I know those were rehearsal scenes. I was actually referring to a level of friendliness that has been going on for a very long time and I don’t think the appearance of something improper just lies on one side. I completely agree that it takes two to tango, and actually in my personal opinion I believe the person who is married holds the responsibility for remaining loyal to their spouse. It’s pretty crappy to get involved with someone who is married but that person isn’t the one breaking the marital vows. Based upon some things that have been said it sounds like he is not happy to be a part of a ship anymore and has pulled back from being “social” (not that he was ever incredibly communicative). It just sounds like he doesn’t want to be associated with his character and “ship” off-screen anymore. Fair to the other? Not necessarily. But no different than what happens in any other work environment when two co-workers get involved. Typically someone ends up going and in this situation it would be the one who is less of a viewer draw.
And yes, people CAN tweet A and E about whatever they want (hopefully, like you said they will be kind) but I think sometimes people need to think about what it is they are tweeting. No one really knows the reason anyone leaves a show (unless the actor says they were forced to leave or something) so assuming that A and E made a DECISION to have a character leave the show, when it could have been the actor’s personal decision, is assuming a lot. I guess I just don’t understand the whole tweeting thing. To me it’s hiding behind technology I would never walk up to either A and E and express my disappointment in an actor leaving the show (even in a kind manner) because – what business is it of mine, I don’t know the facts, and I am not an expert in the television industry so I don’t think my opinion is reasonably relevant.
In any event, Belle has been completely under utilized in my opinion, so if EDR did decide to move on to something else it would make sense to me. I have often won dered if they were so taken by surprise by the popularity of Skin Deep that they brought her on as a regular but never really thought of what to do with her in the short OR long term. Which is too bad because Belle is such a great character and so much could have been done with her and Rumple but they just stuck her on the back burner. Rumbelle was originally my OTP until, sadly, I just kind of forgot about them.

ParticipantI hope I am safe to vent here over something that has bothered me for quite a while and was being discussed in a round-a-bout way in the chat room.
Another death??? Ugh!!! But here’s the thing . . . I LOVE BTS pictures and spoilers, set reports, etc just like everyone else. I love to see the camraderie of the cast, I love that they are so close and that they are so willing to communicate with their fans. BUT. I am a 42 year married woman with a 13 year old son. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to be the spouse of a man who has an on-screen love interest who thousands of fan girls “ship.” I can’t imagine how you deal with the fact that they go to work and kiss another woman for a living – BUT that is their job, they are an actor, a professional, you can see the end product, you know there are cameras and dozens of crew members around and people yelling “action!” and “cut!” So I imagine you just get used to it. What I CANNOT stomach is BTS pictures of those same people hanging all over each other, walking arm in arm, snuggling together etc. I don’t care how “close” a cast is or how much chemistry a ship has – that isn’t appropriate. So if the rumored person is leaving the show – I can’t say that I’m surprised and I’m actually happy about it – for the OTHER cast member’s sake, for his marriage’s sake, for his children’s sake. It’s unfortunate but if this person took responsibility for something that clearly was headed in the wrong direction, regardless of whether it went there, I applaud her. And I hope that his marriage is okay. As always, I continue to admire Colin for being devoted to Helen and am always so happy to see her in pictures at events with the rest of the cast. I’m sorry if this was totally inappropriate but it has been driving me crazy. And it angers me when I see that people are planning to tweet their disappointment to A and E if, in fact, the rumored person is the one to leave the show. Because it might just be the best thing for TWO cast members, a wife, and several children – so angry tweeting A and E really isn’t fair. And when it comes down to who would leave the show – that person is the ONLY one of the two who could leave and have the show survive. Married woman rant over. Continue with your regularly scheduled shipping.

ParticipantI actually think it was done to show that his guard is down and he is worrying about the wrong person. Rumple is one messed up cookie right now – he has,and is, screwing up big time. He has always been so concerned about making sure he has more power than everyone else and making sure he has the upper hand with the other villains. He never worried about Belle having any control over him because she didn’t have the real dagger and even if she did he never thought she would ever use it. Well, crap – wrong he was. The person he thought he would never have to worry about was the person who managed to cut him – it was just symbolic, but now it shows that he is no longer safe with ANYONE, including Belle. Not just because he has kept secrets from her, but because it is impossible for him to keep his guard up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with every single person on the planet – including his own wife.
All these characters have pasts, I don’t really think you can call them “secrets”, that affect who they are today. They have to choose whether or not they feel it’s necessary to share certain things about their past with the people they love. That’s why I don’t think you can call them secrets. Obviously some things affect the people you love and SHOULD be shared. If you need to do something that requires you to use a centuries old dagger to control your spouse in order to alleviate your guilty conscience to rescue someone – I put that in the “SHOULD be shared with your spouse” column. So while Rumple is seriously messed up, Belle isn’t helping the situation. Had she explained what had happened in HER past, would THAT have been the trigger to make Rumple realize that he should NOT be in cahoots with the Snow Queen AT ALL, should come clean with Belle about everything, and should work with the rest of the town to get rid of DQ? Not that I think Belle should be responsible for Rumple’s actions, but if she HAD been honest with him the way she USUALLY is, maybe the outcome would have been different. Now BOTH Belle AND Rumple are in deeper than they where before.
As much as I hate to say it, because I loved Rumbelle (it saddens me that I use the past tense), it may be more realistic in the case of their relationship to have Rumple NOT be able to recover into the person we all WANTED him to be when we saw Skin Deep. If you look at who Rumple is and what his ADDICTION is, it really is NOT realistic for him to be able to recover now that he has Belle and has married her, he has already fallen off the wagon – it’s more realistic for him to continue to apologize to her, tell her he won’t do it again, then get drawn right back into his addiction again. And I can’t decide if this is what I want or not – because I LOVE Rumple (and Robert Carlyle) when he is sinister and creepy but with a hint of regret. That to me is what works best on the show – and is probably WHY I loved Skin Deep so much. It truly WAS Beauty and the Beast. You WANTED that SO badly for Rumple . . . but in the end he didn’t get it and you hoped he could. I think maybe he might end up being the one character that just cannot be redeemed – which might just be okay now, for me.

ParticipantWow! So of course our thread is ON FIRE as soon as 1. the site mysteriously translates everything into Egyptian hieroglyphics rending it completely incomprehensible to me and 2. my life gets ridiculously busy as soon as the hieroglyphics issue is resolved!!! I feel like I missed weeks of school and need tutoring to catch up! So glad to see everyone has perked up and is posting again!! That’s the spirit!!
This will be a jumble of thoughts . . .
First, I can’t BELIEVE all the creamy CS goodness we have been getting! It’s a dream come true. It’s strange to have the tables turned – we used be THRILLED if we just got them looking at each other because we never got anything, now we have been spoiled and we are saying there wasn’t enough CS in an episode!! But I’m not complaining at all – I love all the little moments they are giving us.
I LOVED the little flirty bit about all the blondes in our world from the last epis ode and agree with whoever said Killy’s probably DID realize just how many blondes there are in our world when he was searching for Emma. Something else I thought about – there have been a lot of “Killian your Colin is showing” gifs on tumblr lately. That scene showed up as one. I thought that could be a very sweet little shout out to his blonde wife, Helen, very easily disguised within CS banter on the show – because he did have a bit more Colin mannerism going on there, not so much that he wasn’t Killy/Hook but, enough. Since I find the fact that Colin is so loyal to his wife incredibly appealing – that’s the head canon I’m going with : )
Not trying to be controversial or disagree with anyone because I completely understand WHY people are annoyed by Regina but it just doesn’t bother me. I kind of get the feeling that Regina is SUCH is major character on the show that they write her personality to reflect whatever way the wind is blowing. Like sometimes, the overall plot calls for her to be evil or nasty to Emma or everyone in general so that’s how they write her, but the next week the plot calls for her to show how she has made progress with redeeming herself so they write her that way. And depending on what the plot is or which character centric episode the week is – Regina tends to be the character who goes back and forth personality wise the most, so much in fact that you can get whiplash trying to figure out why she was almost humble and contrite last week but is a raging hormal PMS witch with a vengeance vendetta this week. I’ve noticed it the most this season. However there is also the saying “The mirror has two faces” and we ARE dealing with a freaky mirror this season that shows a different side of a person and we have seen that the title of an upcoming episode is Heroes and Villains so it could be that they are doing it on purpose to show that Regina is extremely conflicted about who she is. If you think about it – Regina, Rumple, and Hook would not be surprised by who they would see talking back to them in the mirror or what they would be saying about themselves – they have already openly talked about how they feel about the dark parts of themselves as villains. Only the “heroes” might be upset as Belle was. But Regina is the one who has TALKED the most about wanting to no longer be an evil person because she has Henry to motivate her. So it could be they are doing it on purpose to show just how conflicted and messed up she is. Who knows? As long as she keeps the “Captain Guyliner” comments coming – I just “Let It Go.”
Can’t wait to see what kind of “Oh, crap!” moment they have ahead for our ship. You know they are setting them up for some kind of horrible ordeal. I don’t think they are killing Hook off, at least that would surprise me – unless Colin wants off the show for some reason but I haven’t seen any indication of that anywhere. It would seem bizarre to kill Hook off after everything else Emma has been through in her life, now that she has found someone she loves – it would actually be anticlimactic to do everything they have done with them and then be like “And Emma’s Black Widow tradition continues . . .” Seriously, the poor woman would never get another date . . . Ever.

ParticipantArriving late to the party on this one but . . .
I also love ONCE because of Skin Deep. I watched from the beginning and loved the show from Day 1 but that episode turned me into a crazy, grown-up fangirl who learned all about shipping and OTPs and “stans” and tumblr and everything else that I am now addicted to!!!
I seriously watched that episode like 50 times, tweeted Robert Carlyle until he routinely tweeted me back (I was the person who asked him what Mr. Gold wears to bed to sleep in – Gold Speedos!!!), joined this site, and drove my family crazy listening to the Podcasts while drinking hot chocolate with cinnamon!!
I love ONCE because it is like a weekly mystery for me – what is going to happen? What spoilers can I find, what did I miss in the episode that I will find in slow-motion gifs on tumblr the day after the episode airs? I love ONCE because I get so excited (and worried, in a good way) about what is going to happen to all the characters).
I love ONCE because I met all of you here! Especially RG, who has always managed to make me laugh even when things are going south like a bitten apple rolling down a hill.

ParticipantSweet love of all that’s Holy!!! I can actually SEE this site, READ it in ENGLISH, and POST!!!
I have missed everyone!! It was so weird, I was getting all the posts in my email but I couldn’t get to the site to respond!! It was like being trapped in a sound proof world where no one knew I existed – it was so frustrating!!! I was screaming responses and jumping up and down but no one knew I was there!!
killianhookfan
ParticipantOMG!! So now appearantly the actress who plays Marian is getting hate mail??
She was a flippin’ human Popsicle frozen to the sofa in the mayor’s office for like 95% of the last episode! What could people possibly be sending her hate mail about?? They didn’t like the way she portrayed Robin’s frozen uncommunicative wife? They thought she silently ruined an OQ moment adhered to the couch under layers of ice?
I think a requirement of this fandom should be that if you send an actor or anyone associated with the show a hate tweet you are required to also say the same thing to their face in person.
Vile warts on the butts of humanity – all of them. May their instagrams get hacked and their iPhones lose all their data!!!
