ParticipantI think maybe I saw the info about Belle coming back for season 2 in a Tweet from Kitsis or Horowitz?? It’s been awhile – I can’t remember. It was right after Skin Deep aired when they were all blown away by how much everyone loved the episode and I think they were waiting to get confirmation on Emilie de Raven’s schedule and contracting and then they announced that she would be back for the season finale and for season 2. For some reason I’m thinking it was a Tweet or a series of Tweets but, like I said, it’s been awhile so I can’t remember. I can try to go back and search for it.
As for the popularity of Belle and Rumple – I think many people found it “strange” that they used Rumple as the Beast in the Beauty and the Beast story initially. But once people saw how it played out I think most people understand why they did it. But, I will say (aside from the fact that I am one of the people that LOVE the two of them together) it does appear that, at least amongst those who get involved on the on-line OUAT sites, the Rumbelle pairing seems to be the most popular so far. Of the episode ratings so far Skin Deep seems to be the most popular by leaps and bounds. There are definately people who don’t like the two of them together – I agree that it seems to be people who want Rumple and Emma together or the people who tend to not like ANY relationships on TV shows (like the ones who can’t stand it when two characters get involved on one of the crime drama shows and refuse to watch anymore). Some of the sites I have seen are oddly obsessive though – Rumbelle porn falls into that category for me anyway.
I guess I fall into the category of people that trust that the writers know what they are doing and as much as I would hate to see them kill off Belle, if they do it I would have to trust it is because they have something better in mind down the road. Sometimes they are also at the mercy of the actors who are cast in a role. Nothing is worse than in the days of the soap opera when a random actor would come on screen and you’d be like “Who the heck is this guy??” and a voice over would say “The part of Steve will now be played by Joe Smith.” That NEVER works, so in that case I would rather have them kill someone off instead of re-casting a role and having to try to pretend that a new actor or actress is someone that they really aren’t. But, short of scheduling difficulties, I do think they tend to look at what the audience likes. And right now with Rumple/Belle being so popular and the series JUST getting started I can’t imagine they would decide to kill off a character that is one half of the most popular coupling on the show. I know they did something like that on LOST before, but if I recall didn’t that actor actually have some kind of health issue he was dealing with in real life?? I didn’t watch LOST but remember everyone being shocked about it.

Participantdarcyfarrow – that’s what I think is so great about this whole series. The example you gave about why Rumple draws you in is spot on. And it is why I was so upset at Belle when she made the “it’s working comment” after she kissed Rumple. You totally nailed it when you said that when he leaned in and asked her “Why did you come back” he is at his sexiest because of how vulnerable he is (it’s no accident that my avatar is that moment) and that, rotting teeth and discolored skin and all, he is truely beautiful at that moment . I honestly did NOT want him to change when she kissed him. Honestly, in my happily ever after version of Storybrooke, and I know people will think this is weird, Mr. Gold would change BACK to Rumple if SB Belle ever kisses him. Not that I would want that for Rumple because I know that he hates his curse but because I would want him to know that Belle fell in love with him when he looked like Rumple and would accept him looking like that forever. Maybe there would be a time when they would have to take the chance that kissing each other could mean that he might change back to Rumple’s appearance but not his personality, but then she wouldn’t care anymore and he would know that she really does love him or something.
Mind you, I still enjoy Mr. Gold immensely.
Does anyone know who any of the make-up artists are for the show and if they have Twitter accounts? It would be interesting to ask them about Rumple’s make-up and what the philosophy has been behind the progression of his look, the glitter, the “mood ring” theory etc. This show is so amazing. I could sit and listen to just the costume and make-up departments talk for hours!

ParticipantI don’t necessarily think the pictures discount the Pinocchio theory. The pictures could simply be showing the backstory of Pinocchio – which would actually make me more likely to think that August is Pinocchio.

ParticipantYou know one thing I’ve wondered about since the very beginning of the show? Isn’t Gepetto a single man in, at least, the Disney version of Pinoccho? I don’t recall the story talking about a widower or maybe it just didn’t go into that much detail. But in the pilot episode when Emma is in jail in Storybrooke and (I can’t remember Gepetto’s SB name now, sorry) Gepetto is in the Sheriff’s office he makes a comment about how he wishes he had had children but he and his wife were never able to have children. I found the mention of his wife strange – where is this wife?? Is he a widower in SB??. It now makes me wonder. We are all getting stuck on August being Pinocchio AND the boy who found Emma on the side of the road because the newspaper clipping said that a “local” boy found Emma on the side of the road. What if both Gepetto and Pinocchio were in on the whole thing from the beginning and there was a “wife” on the outside world who was somehow arranged to raise Pinocchio so they could keep their eye on Emma. This could explain the “local boy” documentation – if he had a “mother” in the real world no one would know that two children actually appeared on the side of the road at the same time. And I’m gonna go out on a limb here. Kitsis and Horowitz said something like it would be sad if we never saw this character again – what if the mother was . . . Maleficent??? After all she did not want the EQ to enact the Dark Curse and warned her about the effect it would have on her. Even though Maleficent and the EQ appeared to be frenemies, she seems like someone that Rumple would use – someone that he would be able to convince would come out on top in some way if she would help him.

ParticipantSomething to consider too is that Rumple said that if you can bottle love you can do anything. Well, Emma is actually the love he bottled and Emma is the person who was sent through the tree. So if you can do anything with bottled love it may actually be that Emma is the exception to all rules of magic. If that is the case than it may be that it was possible to send Emma through in the wardrobe as the exception to the “only one person can use the tree” rule. So then it would be possible for both Pinnochio and Emma to be sent through to the real world using the tree. This wouldn’t be doing anything sinister behind Snow or Charming’s backs, in fact he could have been using Gepetto and Pinnochio to make sure Emma was protected until her 28th birthday to ensure that she would return so that the final battle could begin. It was, afterall the Blue Fairy who said that only one person could be sent through the tree. And knowing how Rumple feels about fairies, and I think, especially the Blue Fairy, I think he would get great pleasure in finding a way to mess with the Blue Fairy’s logic about her own understanding of the tree’s magic.

ParticipantOkay, after reading the above spoiler I am even more excited for the finale. I have to say that I understand why Josh Dallas tweeted that he was totally shocked when he read the finale script (I think it was a tweet where he said that). I think this is going to be totally great and will make for a very interesting second season and definately sends the series in a direction I wasn’t necessarily expecting. This is just one of the many reasons I am so completely in love with this show. It has so many twists and turns and leaves me with my jaw hanging on the floor saying “No way!!” more times that I can count.
I have to say that I get the feeling that the cast also totally loves this show. I’m new to Twitter but from what I have heard from others, this cast is pretty unique in how much they share their every day antics with their fans on Twitter with pictures, etc. And they are pretty consistant in Tweeting that they are excited about where the show is going each episode. To me that says a lot about the show.

ParticipantI’m reading it right now. My son is 10 but reads books that tend to be a bit older and wants to read it so I am screening it for him. Not to pry but I see that you have Christian movie reviews as one of your Podcasts. My son goes to a Christian School and and we go to a Christian Church and we have heard from a lot of our friends that we shouldn’t read the book. So far I haven’t found anything that I find objectionable and I have actually found several Christian review sites that recommend the book and have good discussion questions. I have also heard that many Christian schools are reading the book in middle and high schools. We are okay with the Harry Potter books and the movies though so I tend to have a bit of a different philosophy on those types of things – I think it is okay to read and watch them as long as you have a good discussion about them afterward. I think I will go see the movie after I finish the book. I don’t know what the movie is rated so I don’t know if my son can see it yet. Not trying to bring up religion here specifically – just noticed that Christianity was mentioned on your signature and wondered . . .

ParticipantI’m also so hoping that they don’t kill off Belle. Maybe this will be one of those circumstances where they see how much the fans love the Rumbelle storyline and decide to keep it somehow. I think it really depends on how they have decided they want the curse to be broken and whether they already have decided whether there is some other love interest involved with Rumple (please, oh please, not EQ/Regina).
But it sounded like they heard how much the fans liked the storyline and decided to bring Belle back for Season 2 so maybe there is hope. If so I think it will be one of those things that will be strung out over the life of the series and they won’t end up together until the very end of the show – which would be fine with me as long as they end up together. It would be interesting to see how they would deal with the two of them in Storybrooke together. I actually think it would be interesting to see Mr. Gold have to work to win her over since the big complaint about Skin Deep was how quickly they moved from not knowing each other to being in love. It would be cool to have Belle not know who she is and not have any reason to spend time with Mr. Gold so he would have to really work to get her to see who he really is deep down inside to get her to fall in love with him. Let’s face it – that process would probably take several seasons with the way Mr. Gold’s character is. But it would give him a chance to redeem himself for the mistake he made as Rumple when he threw her out but it would still allow him to maintain his same Mr. Gold personality in SB. Then maybe once she fell in love with Mr. Gold for he really was, maybe then she would remember her FTL life and would remember Rumple and would realize that she had just fallen in love with Rumple all over again – that way Mr. Gold would finally know that Belle truely does love him for HIM, regardless of whether he is Rumple or not. And Belle would realize that Rumple is the same person regardless of whether he is green with rotting teeth or not.

ParticipantAs much as I love to write – this just proves that I am no where near clever enough to be a writer for a TV show. I would never think to include something like that. I seems like such a basic but clever and fun thing to include but I would never think of it. I love that they include things like that – it just makes it that much more fun to analyze and find things!

ParticipantPersonally, yes I did find Rumple sexy in an oddly sinister bad-boy kind of way. But if anyone had asked me at the time, before Skin Deep, I doubt that I would have admitted it because I honestly thought there was something slightly wrong with me to find that character sexy. I was greatly relieved to find that I was not the only person out there mesmerized by more than his magic. However I will say, that they did change something about his make-up from the pilot because I can hardly recognize his face in the pilot – it doesn’t even look like Robert Carlyle at all to me. And in the pilot you don’t see his “Rock Star” outfit and he doesn’t walk around with his
characteristic “strut.” For me it’s the combination of the toned down make-up, the Rock Star outfit and the way Rumple carries himself that I find sexy – I think it’s the “bad-boy” thing he’s got going on (I’m willing to overlook the rotting teeth, it’s all about the complete package ya know). In the pilot, I think he’s just plain creepy – but his character still drew me in at that point and I was immediately in love with his character because I think Robert Carlyle is just an awesome actor. But Skin Deep, for sure did me in. Like I went from, “interesting that I would find that green creepy guy even remotely attractive, something must be seriously wrong with me” to “excuse me while I wipe the drool off my chin but that man is HOT!!!!”
