ParticipantNo, really. In TV Guide they talked about how they came up with Rumple’s wardrobe. At first they just had him in some kind of hoodie but they didn’t like that because he looked too simple and non-threatening so they said “Let’s make him a rock star.” And they had in mind Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. So they re-made him from head to toe with those two in mind and ended up with Rumple’s current look which they said they liked because he ended up looking sexier and more dangerous. There’s no way you put Robert Carlyle in skin tight leather pants without getting that desired outcome!

ParticipantI can’t stand it anymore!!! For the love of ice cream, please just tell me who the heck August is already!! It is driving me absolutely bonkers!!!
I just realized I have spent a good portion of the last month on my life doing copious amounts of research trying to figure out the “true” fictional identity of a fictional character on a television show. In the process I have learned more than I ever wanted to know about Lemurs, the land of Nepal, the Grimm Brothers and anyone and everyone who may or may not have assisted them in writing and/or compiling their fairy tales, every possible variation of the stories of Pinocchio, Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, and the Wizard of Oz. I’ve done math problems to determine whether he could be a 7 year old boy who found Emma on the side of the road, I’ve theorized on the meaning of the license plate on his motorcycle, the reason he only drinks water, I’ve tried to determine whether he could have had red hair as a child . . .the list goes on and on And still . . . nothing. I’m going crazy here.

ParticipantBased upon one of the sneak peaks I just watched, it looks like the SB version of the Mad Hatter has kidnapped MM and that Emma is working with him to find MM without realizing that he is the one who kidnapped her. For some reason I had the feeling the Mad Hatter was going to be a good guy that was going to help Emma start to believe that something funky is going on in SB. But from the sneak peaks – he appears to be one seriously deranged dude.

ParticipantActually, it was Mr. Gold that said that . . . I should know better. 🙁

ParticipantLissy – It’s funny you mentioned Edward Cullen. I honestly actually wondered if they decided to use glitter because of Edward. They were clearly going for a sexy-bad-boy type of Rumple so it would make sense for them to find similarities between the Edward character. Only since Rumple has so many other obvious features – green skin, rotting teeth, skin tight leather pants, the hair, etc. it seemed kind of like they said “Oh let’s throw some glitter on to make him our show’s version of Edward Cullen sparkling in a more subtle way.”
But I also wonder if maybe the glitter just makes his features stand out a bit more. Since his make-up is darker and he is usually filmed in darker light it might just be practical in that the glitter helps to brighten his face.
I hadn’t thought about the fairy dust before.

ParticipantSometimes they package the DVD in a creative way that ties in with the show somehow. Maybe they could somehow package it to be a part of the book – with parts that we have already seen on the show. Then each season they could add new parts the we in each additional season. I agree I think it would be really cool to have a book like the one on the show. It would be really cool too if they did a behind the scenes book with information on each actor and character they play, their costumes, each episode, insights from the writers, and producors, etc. I would love a book with lots of pictures, including behind the scenes filming shots.
I know they won’t have an actual extended version of Skin Deep – if anything, just some scenes they edited out, I’m sure. But if it’s supposed to be my “dream dvd extra” I’m going for the gusto! In Rumple’s words “One can wish . . .” 😉

ParticipantHi Phee, and welcome to the group. I was in Australia for business several years ago (Sydney and one of the Rydes can’t remember which one), loved it and want to go back!
I completely agree with your theory. I don’t think Rumple likes his power at all really – I think he really sees it as a curse but in order to get rid of it, he needs to have an immense amount of power so he has to keep it. Does that make sense?? I think the thing that Rumple hates is the battle between good and evil within his own soul. In one of the episodes someone said that Rumple’s downfall is that he can’t stop making deals with people – I think that is part of his curse.
So he doesn’t want to be evil but he has this power and ability to do really strong magic so people come to him and he can’t help make deals. But he always warns them that magic always comes with a price and he gives them only what they want. So I think he does his best to try to use his magic/curse for good until he can find a way to destroy all magic. But then you have Regina who wants to use her magic for evil, so Rumple has to make sure he stays on top of his game so that she doesn’t get the upper hand. For someone who didn’t really know what he was getting himself into it’s really kind of a tragic situation. I do think that he is also hoping to find a way to get Bae back before he does away with the curses first, though. I do think it is interesting how they have managed to keep humanity in both characters through the use of objects. Here you have Rumple who is the most powerful man in the world – you figure he could have whatever he wants, yet his most prized possession is a chipped tea cup. And the EQs most prized possession is an apple tree that she has had since she was a child.

ParticipantI have to come to Rumple’s defense here (as silly as that sounds since he’s a fictional character!). While we don’t have all of his backstory yet, from what we have seem so far I get that Rumple was only a “Desparate Soul” who was doing everything he could to protect his son, the only thing he felt that he had left in his life. I just went back and watched clips from Desparate Souls. First, Rumple was so scared of the Dark One that he told that Dark One (disguised as a man at this point) that he would be too terrified of him to steal the dagger and control him. So when the old man tells him then he should take the power from the Dark One you have to remember what Rumple saw the Dark One do – he basically acted like a satanic stun gun to the parents of the little girl the soldiers took to fight in the Ogre Wars, and this was right after they had LOWERED the age of the children they were taking to fight in the Ogre War AGAIN. So when Rumple is talking to Bae about what would happen if he steals the dagger and kills the Dark One he says that he would then have the Dark One’s powers but that he could use the power for good instead of evil – and that he would not only save Bae from fighting in the Ogre Wars but he would free ALL the children who were currently fighting in the Ogre Wars.
Yes, he burns the palace to get the knife but he does this because he views the palace as being responsible for sending children to die in the Ogre Wars, so he feels that what he is doing is for the greater good. Then when he kills the Dark One – he is horrified when he discovered that he hasn’t killed some evil “monster” but was tricked into killing a human being and was tricked because being the Dark One is a curse that he is now stuck with. You can see when he is beginning to morph into the Dark One that he is terrified because of what is happening to him. This clearly is NOT what he was expecting and I believe he regretted it as soon as he did it but it was too late.
One other thing I noticed – When Bae asked his father is it was true that he ran from the Ogre Wars, Rumple gets very quiet and reflective and says in a whisper “I had no choice.” This leads me to believe that perhaps he wasn’t necessarily a coward who ran but maybe he to leave the Ogre Wars because Bae mother abandoned him. It’s possible that Rumple didn’t want Bae to know that his mother abandoned him so he pretended to be a coward who ran and went along with the coward story to make people think it was really HIM who she abandoned. By telling Bae that his mother was dead he wouldn’t have to grow up with the burden of knowing that his mother abandoned him. Over time Rumple would have become the town outcast because of his reputation but I think that is something he would have been willing to do.
And while Rumple is clearly Darker now, I still think there is a big difference between Rumple and the Dark One before him. Rumple makes deals with people and always warns them that all magic comes with a price BEFORE he makes the deal The Dark One simply used his power to hurt people and exert control. Rumple is clearly out for himself but he only gives people what they want – even if he knows it will cost them dearly. I think that ultimaley Rumple’s goal is still to use his power for good – it’s just a long and complicated road to get to that good.

ParticipantI’m leaning toward Kathryn being dead now. If you look at the worth of the characters in terms of the reason for enacting the curse to Regina in both FTL and in Storybrooke, you see that both Graham and Kathryn were insignificant. It was really Snow and therefore James that she wanted to make miserable, and by default all the major Fairy Tale characters. To me Graham (as the Huntsman) and Kathryn (as King Midas’ daughter) are very minor players that only served a role to further advance the stories of our major characters, Snow and James . Once they strayed from the path Regina had created for them in Storybrooke, they no longer served any purpose so what reason does she have for keeping Kathryn around locked up somewhere? David never loved her and never will so, unlike Belle, keeping her locked up somewhere isn’t giving her a trump card to use in the future. She doesn’t have any friends or family besides David so no one else cares about her at all. She doesn’t have to fake Kathryn’s death to frame MM for murder. I just don’t see any reason to keep her alive.
