Yeah, I haven’t figured out how come he didn’t go check out whether Belle was really dead either. I read on another board somewhere that somewhere that someone thinks EQ conjured up a spell while she was talking to Rumple in his castle before she started to tell him her “story” about what happened to Belle after he kicked her out of his castle. Because if you look at the video she is doing something with her hands over the tea set while he is spinning at the wheel and it is more than just pouring herself a cup of tea. I’ll admit it does look like she is doing some extreme tea preparation but I don’t know if I am convinced she is doing a spell. Rumple doesn’t drink the tea but he does stand somewhere around the spot where she would have been doing the “spell” so I wondered if the spell made him “believe” what she said so that he wouldn’t even bother checking out whether Belle was actually dead. That’s the piece of the Belle puzzle that has always greatly bothered be – knowing how Rumple knows that the EQ is always trying to trick him out of his power you would think he would immediately think she was lying about Belle just to hurt him. I don’t understand why he wouldn’t check to make sure it’s true.
Unless he DID know that she was really alive?? When he was beating Moe French he said “She’s gone, she’s gone, and she’s never coming back.” He never said “She’s dead.” Maybe he realized that Belle was his one weakness to voluntarily giving up his power because he loved her so much? Maybe he knew he couldn’t ASK the EQ to let Belle go because that would mean he was lowering himself to her? So maybe he still blames himself for Belle being locked up by the EQ because he didn’t do anything about it because he cared more about his power than going to the EQ and asking for her to let Belle go because he knew that Belle would be his downfall? That would still cause him to keep the cup as a momento and he did put the cup on a pedestal, just like he put Belle on a pedestal. Oh my, this could take an entirely different turn if he DID really know that Belle was alive but that the EQ had her but didn’t do anything about it. But maybe he assumes that Belle isn’t in Storybrooke now and that the only thing he has left of her now IS the cup. If that is the case, if he finds out that Belle is alive – oh my. Instead of HIM going crazy on Regina – suddenly that changes things and now Regina is the one with the power. Because both he and Regina may know that he would give up his power for Belle. Only the interesting twist in Storybrooke is that his power is really the knowledge he has – so he could technically be with Belle and STILL have power??

That’s actually why I think Robert Carlyle is such a brilliant actor – he has to play so many different characters in the same show. I really like Lana too and definately think she deserved the nomination but just to use her as the example – she has to play two characters, the EQ and Regina who each have nuances of personalities within each of those characters to keep you wondering what is going with each of them (although I do think we are about to see a third version of her character BEFORE she was the EQ). But with Robert he has to play Rumple before the Dark one, early Dark One who was really kind of sinister, pscho Rumple, funny/playful Rumple, in love with Belle Rumple, and then there’s all the Mr. Gold variations as well that keep you guessing. I’m guessing there are more variations of Mr. Gold to come as well.
Not trying to take away from Lana’s nomination here – she’s definately well deserving! And if ever there was a show that should win an ensemble award, it’s this one!!

I think EQ screwed it up with Belle with the whole “It’s working” comment because I don’t think Belle would have even cared until the EQ put the thought in her head that Rumple could become an ordinary man again. I think while she was still at his castle Belle was trying to get Rumple to see that he WAS a normal man STILL – even though technically it was a long time since he was physically a normal man. I don’t think she really cared about what he looked like (My God – I’ll take him as Rumple, but that’s a topic for another day . . .) because she could see through the “layers” to the “man” he was deep down inside. I think she would have eventually gone back to him anyway – the EQ screwed everything up by telling her she could break the curse. Her comment “It’s working” did make Rumple feel like Belle thought there was something wrong with him which just fed his insecurities. I think eventually they would have kissed on their own and then the curse would have been broken and they both would have been surprised by it – and Rumple wouldn’t have to have wondered if Belle had an agenda or if she only wanted him if he looked different.
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantOh wow, hadn’t thought about Pinnochio being made from the tree!!

He had established that Belle could never love someone shallow like Gaston but given his human background as a coward who had no power, no money and a wife who left him I’m guessing the thought of him being “exposed” for the ordinary man he really was was probably concerning to him. So I think that when he says that “No one could ever love me” he is probably referring to himself as the monster as well as himself as the human – so being concerned about those two issues led him to choose power over love. I think he obviously did realize that Belle loved him, the problem was that he realized that even WITH his power he was STILL a coward when it came to love – that was that one weakness that couldn’t be removed by the curse.
The thing that I have started to find really interesting about Skin Deep is how Regina screwed up the whole thing by telling Belle that Rumple’s curse could be broken with true love’s kiss. Because, I honestly don’t think Belle would have cared about turning Rumple into a human again until Regina gave her the idea, I think Belle would have eventually gone back to Rumple on her own anyway. Belle had managed to find a way to pull the humanity out of Rumple in his “monster” form just by exisiting around him – she didn’t have to kiss him in order to do that. Kissing him was actually the thing that drove the humanity away. I think Rumple’s confidence would have grown the longer he was around Belle and then when they just naturally kissed (and you know they would have) the curse would have been broken without either one of them even realizing what had happened.
I don’t think Rumple/Gold regrets not allowing the curse to be broken – I think he regrets reacting so poorly and then sending Belle away. I have always thought that when he was beating Moe French it was really himself that he was taking his anger out on and that everything he said (except “you were her father”) he meant for himself. I think he regrets not explaining to Belle how he lost his wife and son and why he ended up with the curse in the first place. I think Belle talking about how she wanted to be brave and how she couldn’t be with someone shallow and how she thought love was layered and a mystery to behold – made him feel like he should have realized that she was exactly the person who would have understood why he felt the need to keep the power from the curse because she could see past the layers of the curse.
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantWelcome to the group. It’s an easily addictive group – comforting to know there are others like us out there. Seriously though, I have been a fan of many shows before but this one has seriously got me thinking on so many different levels. Looking forward to theorizing with you!
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantYay!! So excited for OUaT and Lana!!!!
But seriously, how did Robert Carlyle NOT get nominated??? I demand a recount!!!
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantI also think that Regina/EQ is a bit too vain to want to end up all green and scaley with rotting teeth and a bad case of black Lee Press-On Nails. Granted, Rumple and EQ give each other a good run for their money on the Best Dressed Villian Category – but even if she did know about the dagger I don’t see her taking a chance on a bad skin condition when she believes she has other ways of becoming more powerful that my man Rumple.
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantOkay, you can’t leave me hanging here – can you write out the spoiler?? I still haven’t figured out how to do that blacking it out thingy yet. I’m a bit technologically challenged!!
rumplegoldfankristiParticipantI don’t think he’s creepy. I think he knows Emma and is almost teasing her about it- in a flirty way. I just started another thread on what I think might be going on with him. I do think he may have had a questionable past but I think he is making up for it. But Emma also has a colorful past. But even Snow White isn’t all we thought she was from the Fairy Tale – they all have kind of a “darker” side which makes them more interesting. I can’t remember who talked about it in another thread but someone made a comment about it really hasn’t made much sense yet to talk about how there aren’t going to be any more happy endings in Storybrooke because there really didn’t seem to be all that much happiness going on in FTL. It was kind of one big Soap Opera in FTL and it’s like the same Soap Opera where all the characters have amnesia in Storybrooke.
