1) It’s an actual physical plot object, a real heart
2) It’s a theme that will reoccur over the season
As far as the first point goes, I think tHotTB belong to Henry. I think they’ve set it up that for whatever reason, PP needs Henry’s heart. Maybe it’s to break a curse, maybe it’s to save NL, maybe it’s for himself. I’m not sure and there are ton of theories out there.
As to the second, I do think Emma has tHotTB but she didn’t know it until this episode. It’s not the one PP wants but the episode showed that Emma is also a believer, but she had to discover that for herself. Her episode arc was beginning to believe in herself. Now what does PP want from Emma? I’m not sure. Maybe he needs her magic for something or maybe he needs both their hearts. But I don’t think the Henry plot is a ploy. I think he for sure needs Henry’s heart but it’s possible that he needs something from Emma as well.
