He’s for sure the most lovable villain, no where near Cora level of evil. I think I’m in a similar situation as some Hookers. My heart belongs to Rumple, I love him more than any character I’ve encountered in recent TV and because of that it colors everything about OUAT for me. I hated Cora sooooo much not because of how evil she was or what she did to Regina but because she broke Rumple’s heart. While I feel sorry for Hook, at times, I find it hard to see his side because of my Rumple’s love (it’s a sickness guys…a sickness). And while killing Milah was extreme Rumple wasn’t wholly without justification (just like Snow had some measure of justification when killing Cora. Cora would have killed them all, and Milah broke Rumple’s spirit and heart) but Hook shot Belle who is really entirely innocent in all this. She even got Rumple to stop his attack on Hook on his ship. I just…that’s really hard for me to overlook. But I am more open to liking Hook than I was in The Outsider because of his speech to Regina in the mines and because he did come back. And I do think he’s a capable of being a “cuddly” character like I see with Rumple, honestly I just need more of his backstory. That’s what did it for Rumple. Between A Desperate Soul and Skin Deep you see a totally different side to Rumple that changed a lot of people’s opinions about him.

It’s all very well for Hook to say after the fact that they would have returned for Bae when he was old enough, but for Bae, actions speak louder than words for children

That line from SOTM angered me so much, more towards Milah and Hook. “When you were old we were going to come back for you, we talked about!” Yes, because showing up after years of thinking his mother is dead, learning that she had abandoned him and just *now* deciding she could take Bae with her is perfectly fine and won’t leave a host of emotional scars. But I digress.

I’m pretty certain there weren’t divorce laws back then, otherwise couldn’t Regina have just filed for a divorce instead of planning the assassination of King Leopold? So, while Milha and Hook may have been living together on his ship, and they were lovers, they wouldn’t have been husband and wife. I doubt common law marriage would have applied in Hook and Milha’s case, because Milha still had a legal husband, namely Rumplestiltskin. I think common law marriage only applies to two single people who aren’t otherwise legally married to another person. Otherwise, men who keep mistresses would be more like bigamsts if they stay married to their wives.

I agree with this but I also think we’re trying to inflict modern real world scenarios on to something that is fantastical (not as in the show is fake, but as in FTL operates by it’s own laws and morals). Rumple and Milah were still married, I agree, in the legal sense of they never got divorced. But do we need to question: what is marriage? Is marriage a binding contract that must be broken before one can enter another binding contract? Or is it something more. I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here but defining marriage is tricky. If Milah and Hook had true love then does that outweigh whatever Rumple and Milah had for a short period of time, especially in a show where TL is given the highest consideration.

I really need them to officially tell me how old Rumple is. Because if Bae came through at the age of 14 in 1858 (at least) and it’s 2013 now…then Bae is 155 years old. And Rumple, being around 35-ish when Bae was born is about 190..

MRJ stuck around for the back half of S2 but was always a GUEST STAR, there is a difference. That thread you reference is saying that MRJ would be around for the rest of the season, starting with Manhattan, which is true but always as a guest star. He was upgraded to a series regular just a few weeks ago.

Colin IS a series regular beginning with the back half of S2 and his name appears in the “starring” opening creidts whereas MRJ’s appears with guest stars, this is the difference. He remains a series regular for S3 just like GG and JMo and RC and Josh and Lana, ect.

Here is the official cast list from the ABC UpFronts that occurred a few weeks ago. Note that Colin is still there and Meghan has been removed. MRJ’s announcement that he was NOW a series regular came a few days after.

Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold

For some pop culture perspective, Han Solo intended to leave at the end of A New Hope and yet, he came back at the last minute too and helped Luke. I think next season, we will see Hook shine and really become the hero.

Nice reference and given how nerdy A and E are, it’s probably spot on. I posted in another thread that if S1’s theme was Belief and S2’s theme was Repentance (proposed by RaulYbarra) then S3 will be Redemption for Rumple, Regina and Hook. I think those three are going to go through a very intense journey emotionally as characters. At the end of S3 I expect to have very different Rumple’s, Regina’s and Hook’s. Not saying their redemption is complete because it’s a series thing for at least Rumple and Regina, but all three will have reached a new stage in their overall character arc.

While I was thrilled that Adam responded to me, that tweet had me screaming at my computer. Like, “what do you mean she didn’t have her memories?! Do you know how many theories you just killed?!”

I really hope that the writers actually *address* Belle’s potential internal conflict with her cursed memories. That would be interesting character development for her. However, they’ve yet to really address how being locked up all those years affected her, so I’m not sure I should get my hopes up- before she lost her memories, she wasn’t much different from how she had been in FTL. I might just have to address it myself in fanfic!

Me too! I think we’ll get some Lacey/Belle moments where she can’t believe some of the stuff she did or we’ll see Belle do things that only Lacey would have done.

I’m not expert and we do need to consider that Hook and Milah live in a world that is not regulated like ours, but could they have a common law marriage? They were obviously deeply in love, they lived together for 5-10 years like Keb pointed out, and once Hook had Bae (even for a short time) they “shared” a child.

Phee makes a really good point. I don’t think plot device is the correct term for Lacey. The BF is a plot device because her appearances are simply used to advance plot without any logic to it (specifically a Dues Ex Machina). Lacey did serve a purpose to the overall plot of Rumple, Regina and even Belle. Maybe it wasn’t the best story or the most well thought out story, but Lacey did serve a purpose.

    What about Hook now?

Hook gave me whiplash in the season finale. I’ll take this apart from a the timeline and I’ll see what conclusion I come to because I’m still not sure about him…
NL of the past: he starts off almost threatening Bae, he’s very menacing (in my eyes) to a poor young boy who was just carried by a magical shadow. It’s only after he learns that he is Rumple and Milah’s son that he becomes nice. He then protects Bae from Felix and then we see him teaching Bae to sail. All these things warmed my heart and made me want to like Hook more (because I feel so bad for Bae that anyone showing him some measure of love and affection I tend to like). But in the telling of his past, I think Hook was speaking the truth as he knows it, but I also think he was fishing for information about Rumple and how to kill him. And while I believe that Hook would have let Bae stay aboard the JR up until that last second when the Lost Ones took Bae, the fact is he did let them take Bae. Hook, like Rumple, is so consumed by jealousy that it clouded his chance to be a father. Bae was spot on: Rumple and Hook are very much alike. And because my heart already belongs to Rumple, I find it hard to see Hook in the same light that I am constantly seeing with Rumple.
SB of the present: Talk about back and forth! He helps out GOAT, learns he’s going to die, so he switches sides to the Charmings, and then once he has the bean and Emma pleads with him to help out the Charmings (because they understand each other) he STILL RUNS AWAY! I know the CS’ers will have a different perspective on why Hook came back (and you all may be right) by my reading of this scene is that it was learning that Bae was dead (the son her wronged and wished to make amends to) that brought him back in the end. He owes Bae an apology and needs to ask for forgiveness, just like Rumple does. That’s why he came back with the bean. But still, he took the bean and everyone almost died.

So where do I stand with Hook now?
    1) He still shot Belle. That’s…very hard for me to get over. (And yes I know. Rumple killed Milah but Milah is up there on my list of most hated characters)
    2) He is obviously a man who loved Milah deeply, so deeply that he’s willing to overlook that Bae is also Rumple’s son.
    3) He is consumed by jealousy and anger and his need for revenge. Give him a funny voice and tighter leather pants and he’d be Rumple.
    4) In the end, he did come back. That’s important. Without knowing that Henry had been taken, he still came back.

I talked myself into circles. 😆
I think I will really warm up to Hook in S3. I think when we see him work with Rumple and the Charmings to find Henry I will really like him. Until then I remain a bit undecided.
