KeymasterMy assumption is that he can’t kill people. He can only keep them in the underworld or send them on to a better or worse place. If my guess is correct, it needs to be more explicit in the show.
If Hades is incapable of killing people then it needs to said outright. Loud. And in language that is so clear as to make it completely unquestionable because that (Hades’s being unable to kill) would just be straight up weird. We’ve never had a villain that couldn’t (not wouldn’t…but couldn’t) commit murder; and especially not one that was also a god.

KeymasterI think they at least attempted to do it, when they had Red sitting on a log and quietly freaking out, unsure of how to handle these newfound emotions, but it was a pretty half hearted attempt
It was half-hearted because they didn’t want her sexuality to become an issue. They never once used the word gay or lesbian in this episode. They didn’t want to draw attention to any sort of sexuality, couching it as “love is love!” It’s encouraging but at the same time, these are real issues for a great many people—individuals who begin to explore their own feelings and are conflicted because of their past, their ethics, their friends or family….
This is a chance, then, to really dig deep and explore what acceptance means, not only person-to-person but also on a personal, inside level.
Can’t have such negative attention and controversy associated with one of their Disney Princesses.
And isn’t Mulan getting a live action film at some point?

KeymasterDepends on which version of Aurora’s tale you believe, S2 or S4…
Right my questions are pointless and so is consistency.

KeymasterYou’d think Emma would at least start to question why TLK has never worked for her and Hook.
Smart, savvy, intuitive S1 Emma would. PodEmma has all the heart eyes and is incapable of seeing anything.

KeymasterI stopped watching, so I don’t know but – is she into him then???
Yeah it’s been pretty clear that she’s in love with him. But I also wonder if she’s playing some long con at the same time (just like I think he might be)

KeymasterThis episode and ship, though, feel like it was designed to, at best, appease and, at worst, shut up the queer fanbase. I mean in one breath A and E declare that love is love (yay!) but then have Mulan speak in gender neutral terms–and NOT for the first time this season! You don’t get to claim to celebrate diversity while denying the sexuality of one character multiple times over. It comes off as tone deaf and like you’re only concerned with the buzzworthyness of your show.
As you said elsewhere, the whole pronoun game with Mulan might not even be the writers’ fault, if it’s the result of executive meddling due to Mulan being a Disney princess. This would go beyond A&E’s control. Considering what they allowed Ruby and Dorothy to do and say in this episode, but not Mulan, does make me more suspicious that something fishy is afoot.
Fair point and yeah, I’ve said as much. But I’m not sure I can let A and E off the hook so easily. If Disney told them NO because OUAT Mulan *is* very much a Disney property, then, okay that’s sad (for tons of reasons) but it is outside their control. However, if faced with that dilemma, then I’d expect them, as professional writers, to figure out how to best tell the Red/Dorothy story so that it felt organic and natural and not just dropped on to the screen at the last second. And then we’re back to screen time, the number of plot lines, the number of characters; so how so you tell so many single side stories (Rumbelle, Zades, Snowing and Baby Neal, Henry the Author) alongside the arc-plot (Hades, Operation Firebird) and have a Very Special Episode?

KeymasterOh noes! Do I detect a Bellarke shipper…?
Oh noes! No comment
(but yes, in the most minor way possible.) (at least until this season when I became incredibly frustrated with him though I do think they’ll go that route eventually) (now I’m mostly just like, “plz stop hurting Raven! She is tiny and deserves only good thingsl!”)
This sums it up quite nicely actually: http://www.bustle.com/articles/155329-why-ruby-dorothys-relationship-on-once-upon-a-time-missed-the-mark
I literally just read that and was about to post it myself.
This line in particular: The most beloved pop culture couples are such because the audience gets to watch them fall in love, to see their connection forge, connect, and solidify over long periods of time — or for God’s sake, at least longer than one episode.
I agree somewhat with Keb that Ruby helps sell this marginally but only because we’ve been down many parts with our Wolf Girl and so we trust her emotions, whatever they may be.

KeymasterSomeone else brought this up in a different thread, but didn’t Hades enchant a chisel, not Hook’s hook, in order to carve the names onto the tomb stones? *sigh*
I thought the same, until I actually re-watched the scene. Hook actually never said that Hades enchanted his hook to carve the names. He said that “he enchanted my hand to carve these markings in the first place”. Back in the episode “Labor of Love”, Hades shows the hook to Emma, and drops it on the ground before leaving. This took place before Hades asked him to chisel names, too. Hook continues to be hookless until Emma saves him in the “Devil’s Due”, so I’m guessing Emma kept the hook and returned it to him. So I think the enchantment was done to Hook’s hand, and that was what gave him the power to carve names, rather than the chisel itself.
Sweet baby Jesus…if we need to watch several scenes across several episodes to get that….

KeymasterDorothy’s backstory being too close to Alice’s from Wonderland- It’s practically the same. Girl visits magical land, returns home, family don’t believe her and think she’s crazy. Alice’s father didn’t believe her until he visited Wonderland himself.
I don’t know if they pulled this idea from Alice of our WL OR from the Return to Oz movie in which Auntie Em and Uncle Henry actually ship Dorothy, freshly returned to Oz and sad, off to a mental hospital for electrotherapy treatments.
Return to Oz, by the way, is a Disney film, not associated with the iconic 1939 film.

KeymasterGuys, they are supposed to be the heroes! They can’t swap out names for people they like less. That’s not very heroic. It reminds me of the end of season 2 when Regina was going to sacrifice herself and Henry pointed out that the heroes needed to find a way to save her even if she was once the evil queen. Zelena like it or not is family to Regina so I don’t think they will leave her trapped there. Banishing her to Oz is one thing, keeping her permanently in the UW is another.
Supposed to be heroes is key. They are SUPPOSED to be. And one of the biggest themes this season so far is that morality is relative (shoot, that’s one of the biggest themes of the SERIES) and we are told time and time again that the FAMILY matters more than anything else.
No one cares about the peasants or the minor baddies, just the little CharMillStiltskin clan. Why should I expect them to take the moral high ground now when they usually don’t if it means keeping their insular little gang together?
