KeymasterI have very little good to say. Honestly, this entire arc has been pretty poor but this episode really solidifies it as the writers just don’t care about anything other than certain characters and couples, to heck with everyone else.
LIKED
–Zelena. It’s a strange and twisted world when I like Zelena. At least she’s comfortable in her villainy. She doesn’t care about anyone but herself and she’s okay with it. None of this wishy washy greyness.
–“Gina! Robbie!” LOL
–The Hook/Rumple showdown in the forest. They both know how to snark at each other.
–Greek myths! (plz don’t screw this up, OUAT. plz don’t mess with my happy place)
–“Over the rainbow!” LOL at Regina and Zelena’s lines
–Classic Heroes Katabasis! MY FAVORITE THING. Too bad OUAT is sure to screw it up.
MIXED
–The Snow and Emma conversation was great. It was also the only family conversation we’ve gotten all season.
–This notion of deciding what kind of man you want to be. Okay, fine. Good lesson. But you know what? Just because you decide to be a good man doesn’t mean that it erases all the evil you just did. It doesn’t mean you get to declare yourself a hero.
–Rumple being really honest with Belle and sending her over the town line. AND THEN IT ALL WENT BADLY. SEE BELOW. TRUST ME. YOU’LL KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.
DISLIKED
–PapaJones has no depth. He’s just a straight up bad father, down to naming his new son after an old one. I cared about him not at all and didn’t even blink when Hook killed him.
–PapaJones was in a sleeping curse and fell in love with his nurse. Mmmmkay. Oh, she died because of the plague. That’s convenient.
–Snow doesn’t feel like fighting for #hope but does feel like having Granny’s one final time. KAY!
–Hook using Henry’s image and Emma’s love for Henry to manipulate Emma. Morals!
–“Let me die a hero.” Nope. You don’t get to decide if you’re a hero or not. That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of this works.
–The Lake…is Purgatory? I don’t…understand.
–Emma doesn’t break her own darkness. Hook does. Sure, not by TLK, but Hook nonetheless. It would have been *such* a strong message if Emma had done it herself.
–Emma has to go to Hades to rescue Hook because it’s not fair to Hook. Are you kidding me? I’m trying really hard to not bring up Neal but….NEAL. HENRY. FAMILY. MORALS. FAIRNESS. You want to talk about FAIRNESS?! UGGGGGGGGHHHHH
–Okay here we go. Prepare thyselves, friends. Rumple is the Dark One, once again. Screw you, show. I’m so sick of this. So every other character under the sun gets a chance at redemption and a new life and forgiveness but heaven forbid that Rumple get that chance, right?! And not only that but he takes advantage of Belle and sleeps with her, taking her apology and her second (no…third!) chance for all its worth but is still a lying liar from liar town who cares more about his power than his wife, his son, his life, EVERYTHING. And it’s all in contrast to Hook. That’s the message we’re supposed to get. Hook = GOOD! Rumple = BAD! Hook = worthy! Rumple = not! Enough! Just enough! Redeem them both for crying out loud. Stop making Rumple this Super! Duper! Evil! Villain! For! Reasons! That’s not how he was conceived and they freaking know it! He wasn’t Cosmic! Evil. He wasn’t the Trickster Archetype! He was a father. Looking for his little boy and doing highly questionable but ultimately human things. That was Rumple. And they have just chipped away and away again and again until he’s nothing but this walking black hat with no depth and no heart and nothing–absolutely nothing–resembling Rumplestiltskin.
(I might be angry)

KeymasterThe heroes just left SB, but where is the Camelot crew of Arthur and Guinevere? Aren’t we a little bit worried about Arthur trying to overtake the city or something?
Wasn’t there a scene filmed in the forest where Merida was leading a chained Arthur away? Or did it just get deleted?
It must have gotten deleted because yes there was.

KeymasterLeave it to Cora to be the Mayor of Hell. She wouldn’t have it any other way more than likely.
It’s interesting you say that because in classic myth everyone knows that Persephone is Hades’s bride. But there’s another name for her that often isn’t used: Kore/Cora. It means maiden and it’s meant to emphasis Persephone’s youth, but count on OUAT to flip it.

KeymasterI said some things I won’t repeat but it comes down to this: rage.
It’s not even that Rumple is a good character anymore, he’s certainly not the character I once loved. But really…? Again?! You couldn’t actually try to redeem him and let him earn forgiveness? You had to go and make him lie to Belle (again again again) and turn back to his old ways?! Why? WHY?! Why must every other villain under the sun get the chance for goodness but not him?

Keymaster“Now she has such a great relationship with her family in the sense that they’re all connected and they’re all there for each other,” she says.
Which is why there have been so many significant and emotional scenes between Emma and her parents this season!
…wait.

KeymasterI thought Rassilon was meant to be the guy played by Timothy Dalton in David Tennant’s last episode as the doctor? The one who the master sacrificed himself for to defeat?
PoM: Rassilon Regenerated. Just like the Master. He was Lord President in both episodes.
LOL, yes. What Jiminy said. And Rassilon has been seen before in Who, in the Classic Era, though I guess we mostly associate Dalton with him.
(Now bring back Omega)
Anyone else get the feeling that Moffat has a real boner for Clara as a character?
I think Moff found her more fascinating than he wrote her. The idea of her–the Impossible Girl who has been through all the Doctor’s regenerations–is a good idea and even a great one, but the way he wrote her early on and then making her the STAR instead of Co-lead makes it hard to warm up to the idea. She also stopped being the impossible girl in S8 once her reason for said impossibility was discovered and resolved.
It’s not uncommon for writers to think their creations more interesting than how they translate on screen.

KeymasterI’m still trying to process this one but overall it was a mixed bag for me.
LIKED
–The Doctor’s final moments of the episode. I loved him putting himself back together with his jacket, switching the dials on his TARDIS, and grabbing his Sonic. He’s a bit damaged but he’s still the Cosmic Hero and he’s ready to save the Universe again.
–Maisie! Seriously, this girl brings such a gravitas to the role of Ashildr/Me. Which is rather remarkable given that she’s only 18/19. I wouldn’t mind if Ashildr/Me pops up every now and then so long as the writers don’t overuse her. She and Peter have a fantastic chemistry as two immortals and it’s fun to watch them.
–“You lot? No. You cramp my style, just look at your hats.” I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Those hats are some of my favorite things because they are so epically silly.
—During his conversation with Ashidlr, the Doctor insists that things can last forever and that’s why he stole a time machine. I got quite a whiff of “The Great Gatsby” and Jay Gatsby insisting that you can repeat the past, as he reaches out toward that green light and Daisy Buchanan. Is Clara the Doctor’s green light? Or is it more the idea of being free from fear and loneliness that is his great dream? I’d say the latter, personally.
–Loved seeing the retro TARDIS interior from the Classic Era
–I wonder if the Military Time Lord turning into black woman from a white man is Moffat acknowledging and hinting that the next Doctor might not be a white man.
—“Look how far I went for fear of losing you. It has to stop. One of us has to go.” I will say that this is a nice ending to Clara’s addiction thesis. While Clara might not have learned all the lessons of addiction and abuse, she did learn (and finally understand) one thing: she and the Doctor are bad together when they both go to extraordinary and absolutely mental lengths to avoid losing one another. It’s not good for the universe. So, they must fly apart.
–The way the episode is framed so that it looks as though Clara has lost all her memories but really the Doctor who couldn’t remember. Moffat got me on that one.
–NEW SONIC. PRAISE GOD.
MIXED
–Clara’s ending. Ok, on the one hand, Clara did in fact die when she faced the Raven. But on the other hand, it’s after some indeterminate amount of time spent flying around the universe in her own TARDIS (erm…nope, that’s the Doctor’s valiant steed) with Ashildr. So she’s dead but not really, not yet. That’s Moffat for you, I guess. But, I will say that one of the positive aspects here with Clara is that keeps her agency intact. Clara chose to go and face the raven two episodes back and now she’ll get to decide when she wants to face the raven once more. The Doctor doesn’t decide her fate nor does he get to rob her of her past; Clara decides her fate and advocates for her past. Moffat often gets into hot water for some misogynistic overtones, but I think we can say he subverted that criticism this time.
–The giant crypt. While I love the classic heroes journey and the katabasis feelings, the actual Matrix that absorbs all the Time Lords (or something) and the Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, were a bit much
DISLIKED
–Talk about a disappointing homecoming! The Doctor is supposed to have more mixed emotions about Gallifrey but he doesn’t seem to have any positive feelings at all. 10 and 11 always spoke about their home with a certain fondness but the Doctor is just *angry*
–Rassilon, dude, take a chill pill.
–The Sisterhood of Karn could be very interesting if they were given some development but sadly, they aren’t.
–What exactly does Missy have to do with anything? I was confused by Ashildr and the Doctor’s conversation suddenly turning to her. Missy had nothing to do with Clara and the Doctor meeting? Right? Am I forgetting something? Was she the Lady in the shop who gave Clara the Doctor’s number?
–Not nearly enough funny hats.
Anyway, I’ll have more to say about the season as a whole later on (there’s some of what I’ll say in my blog already) but here’s the Xmas episode trailer
Not sure what to think about this. Doesn’t seem overly Christmas-y and I’ve never been *that* enamored of River Song, but I think she and 12 are going to have fun.
