KeymasterNo interest for me. A lot of it is because I’m not going near another A and E story for, at the least, a very long time, and at the most, ever, but also because ABC Family shows tend to be a little too “young” for me and full of bad camp and bad cheese. (PLL being kind of an exception and even then that show has problems like WHOA but it’s also strangely addictive). This one seems no different, honestly.

KeymasterI will say that the “love is a weapon” thing is a TV trope. I know we’re going to the Underworld so that may not stand here. If Hook ends up forgiving Emma, it will actually be good character growth for him. However, if he seeks revenge on her, I’ll still be up on my soap box.
And what if it’s both? That’s the problem. The writing of Hook differs from writer to writer which is why he looks wildly unstable most of the time. The writers either don’t talk to each other or no one realizes that he’s being written as someone who’s personality and opinions change not only episode to episode but moment to moment. The writers are so caught up in their PLOT and what their own end game is (Underworld, the Dark Swan, ect) that they don’t stop and see the entire narrative they are creating and how they are casting their characters.

KeymasterMorning. I’m a bit more level headed this morning. So in response to Jo’s wonderful World Building and OUAT mega post, I don’t have a whole lot to say except that it’s spot on. The more shaky and unfocused the world because the bigger mess it creates and the more I stop caring about the world, the characters, and the plot. That’s what happens when you don’t stick to plans and laws you’ve set up.
As for Hook, I would still love it if Slurpeez were right about how he’s being purposely written (ie: bad for Emma) but I still have zero hope on that front. The writers, for me, are not that self-aware (their half-hearted attempt at LGBT shows me that they are totally unaware of certain social issues and how to tell a convincing love story–at least post S3A finale). They still think the way he’s written is perfectly fine (and not at all wildly inconsistent) and that Emma/Hook is a love story that might have struggles but will come out smelling like roses in the end. Like, after Emma traverses the underworld to find the pirate instead of leaving him there forever. The fact that the writers don’t see a problem with a relationship in which one partner says they want to hurt the other is…oh, so troubling. Belle and Rumple have had a lot of issues but Rumple has never threatened to hurt Belle, emotionally or physically. I’d like Adam to really think about the message he’s sending his daughter when they have the romantic lead for the Audience-Stand-In-Character (Emma) say such things and then have the relationship touted as something romantic and true.
Blah blah blah, rape culture. You guys know me well enough to know where I’m going with this.

KeymasterIt has nothing to do with OUAT ending, but it might be worth noting that A and E have split their time before (OUATinWL) and the last time that happened it was during the NL/Oz arc. Opinions will vary about whether or not A and E can effectively split their time/effort/writing between OUAT and another project.

KeymasterIt’s 3:30 am. I am awake. I just had the most intense freakout (mostly to Phee who is the only one awake with me right now–and she assures me that I’m adorable) ever. I’m like legit crying. I can handle any sort of stupidity OUAT throws at me. OUAT can keep their poor narrative, their poor character development, and their misogynistic pirate and toxic ship. Just get me to Dec 18th. Just get me to Dec 18. Just get me to Dec 18th. That’s all I want. I just want my OTP. (there may or may not have been some Shamy news when I woke up this morning)
No but really guys. Dec 18th. It’s going to be an “All Ranchettes on Deck” sort of night. Jo is going to need help handling my emotional vomit.
(I’ll respond to CS/OUAT/World building later. I’m still sobbing into a pillow ATM)

KeymasterIf we ever get an in-show explanation, I expect it to be along the lines of “Emma used her own magic to shield Hook from noticing the symptoms of being a Dark One.” How she did so is anyone’s guess.
That’s what I’m expecting, actually. An entire scene of Emma handwaving (literally) all these inconsistencies before she cast the Curse in Camelot. The problem is that it’s so….well, it’s handwavey.
*insert long winded speech about fantasy and world building and how it’s not anything goes and how lack of rules means I stop caring since there is nothing to grab ahold of*

KeymasterFor me, this is really the big one. We know they’ve been back in SB for several days (minimum) and he’s never once noticed that he doesn’t need sleep? And that’s he not getting tired?
If I was on the writing team, I’d put it this way: It looks to me as if people with unresolved issues are more vulnerable to dark influence. The dark spirit strengthens their fears and hatreds, making sleep impossible — which in turn changes their personalities and behaviours — but it also sustains their bodies through what would otherwise be terminal sleep deprivation. Hook has dealt with his issues, so he sleeps soundly and doesn’t show signs of dark influence. Thoughts? Comments?
Logical, well thought out. Perfectly fine. But, the issue is that at the end of the day they aren’t giving us any sort of in universe explanation. We have to make things up to try and rationalize their plot

KeymasterBecause what they’re telling us and what they’re showing us are two totally different things.
The motto of OUAT since S3B.
Passing thoughts :
1) The exchange between Hook and Emma is absolutely emotional blackmail. But the writers don’t *get* that. They see it as romantic because you’ll find exchanges like that all over TV-media. It’s part of living inside Rape Culture without actually knowing/understanding it. Emma’s basically reduced to a magical mcguffin for Hook’s manpain.
2) In the same vein, the writers are not being clever. They are writing how other “romantic” leads between bad boy/good girl go. They are just very bad at it.
